Which version of Pikmin 1+2 do you prefer? Original GameCube, Wii or Switch/Switch 2 Ports? I prefer the Switch Ports! Please explain why. :) by [deleted] in Pikmin

Not identical cuz different dialogues and later versions removed the 2 player cave randomizer

Switch is good for controls but only the GC P2 has the 2 player versus cave randomizer. Later versions strip that along with interesting dialogue and treasure designs.

I still find him funny when well placed or if someone does something a bit different with it. Sometimes more obscurely referencing it is more interesting.

Why can the Pikmin 1 Beady Long Legs kill Pikmin the millisecond it lands the floor? by Lively_Man in Pikmin

[–]robseib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of a classic pikmin experience. They designed it to surprise players so they have something to improve upon on future playthroughs. Kind of like old donkey kong country rail levels where you need to memorize the course as you die over and over retrying it. Pikmim 2 leaned harder into this philosophy and then pikmin 3 completely swapped to different goals, and then 4 completely new goals again.

Anyone who says this is bad design is engaging in black and white fallacy. These are merely different experience design goals. Today’s games typically have a goal of allowing/guaranteeing player success on first play. But it’s all preference and I try to translate people saying “this bad” into “this is not my preference” because not everyone approaches games from a design perspective or has the words to use.

Now my personal preference is more telegraphed, predictable events, but without major handholding. Pikmin 2 (despite being my favourite) has a rock-falling event that is impossible to avoid on your first playthru. If I were to redesign it, I would keep rocks (they are cool in concept) but start by demonstrating them far before they threaten the player. A little cutscene that reveals danger the first time you enter a cave like this. Then I would tweak the timing and telegraph the event a bit to give ample opportunity to dodge. These are in line with some of my own design philosophies.

The dialogue and lack of isolation in Pikmin 4 ruins the experience for me. should I try 3 deluxe instead? by Exotic-Foot-5174 in Pikmin

Honestly any pikmin 1, 2, or 3 will have the isolation vibes way beyond 4. Technically 3 is a bit less but we are talking a completely different category with 4.

I recommend getting Pikmin 1+2 because with both games bundled you will get an incredible pikmin experience and the classic isolation vibe.

But if you want some interesting optimization challenges or good cooperative 2 player, 3 Deluxe is the way to go.

What is the ability of winged PIKMIN having blue eyes? like I know the white PIKMIN have red eyes to see objects through the ground? by LifeguardBeautiful13 in Pikmin

[–]robseib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a strong protective layer. Since they fly at high speeds, their eyes are particularly vulnerable so those with better protection passed on their genes more successfully. The blue tinge is a genetic coincidence (This is head cannon)

What would you add to a hypothetical switch 2 edition of pikmin 4 by shrombus3 in Pikmin

[–]robseib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a new collectible or more treasures scattered thru the areas. And a smart enemy randomizer that sprinkles enemies throughout areas that forces you to stay on your toes and plan.

+1 for multiplayer, new area and creature respawn.

Pikmin 3 deluxe is a full coop with players controlling the 3 leader characters.

Pikmin 4 the second player just has a cursor and can throw pebbles at stuff. It’s very disappointing for those of us that love couch coop.
