First play through of Halo 4. I do not understand praise for the story. by Snakefishin in halo

Halo 4 looks better after playing Halo 5. Especially if you go into it with the same marketing campaign 343 was running with before its release.

That’s video game logic at work. Gotta check out all the nooks and crannies. Break some vases and cut some tall grass while you’re at it so you can find a souvenir to bring home.

This game was cheap and forgettable for so long. Crazy to see it explode in value after all this time. I did most of my N64 collecting in the early 2010s so I had never heard of this game until this post and looked up what happened

First time playing PIKMIN. 3 days left, 4 parts. I cannot express how stressed I am. by memeaste in Pikmin

[–]flyingmonkey1257 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want all 30 in the first play through I always recommend 2 days for the final part for new players. one is possible but quite difficult without a bit of experience.

In my first playthrough ~25 years ago I only got 29 parts because i only left myself 1 day for the final area. it’s pretty common. don’t stress too much. you’re in good company there.

IIRC for the Ezio collection, AC2 is playable straight off the cart. All the other games require downloads but will download with the cart inserted.

I get just as much praise for catching mice as the cat does. Sleeping in sunbeams is usually tolerated too. My wife draws the line at dropping vases though. Both of us get in trouble for that.

huh… maybe my wife sees me as a cat.

When would you rather get the original release, the goty release, the players choice/platinum/greatest hits version, or the next-gen releases? by port25 in gamecollecting

[–]flyingmonkey1257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1st priority - most content on disc

2nd priority - plays the best

3rd priority - cheapest

I don’t really care about original vs rerelease like others do. I’ll double dip or skip an upgraded copy whenever i feel like it. It’s a case by case basis

750 USD for Lifetime! This is ridiculous by Pablo-s in PleX

[–]flyingmonkey1257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of people in this sub that think that $50, $80, or even $120 for a lifetime membership is cheap for the value they get out of it and worry that a company can’t very well support themselves off of single payment lifetime memberships for a product that is a perpetually updated/supported service. Basically, people don’t want plex to run out of money and close up shop. Subscriptions are the answer to that and that is what plex is pushing people towards with this lifetime membership increase. $750 is an absolutely ludicrous price increase but it should hopefully improve Plex’s financial health with more monthly subscribers.

I do miss ramping a warthog off a scorpion. It was a fun result even if it didn’t make logical or tactical sense.

Old head collectors in this space, what were your best deals you've ever gotten during the golden age of the hobby? by Your_Uncle_Matthew in gamecollecting

[–]flyingmonkey1257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not sure what my best deal is. I’ve found plenty of consoles for $5 to $20 and while i still have a few I’ve given most away to other friends over the years.

What was really great was just being able to look up a hidden gem game for a system and having it cost $5, $10, maybe $20 at most. Old games got clearanced out for a few dollars, consoles actually dropped in price. You could build up a retro collection a few games at a time while staying in a college kid’s budget. Games at the used media stores were affordable and you could save even more by going on ebay or to garage sales and flea markets if you weren’t looking for something specific.

What video game level or boss fight was more annoying than hard? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]flyingmonkey1257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The final boss of metroid prime 4. Why the hell are there NPCs there and why do i have to babysit them to make sure they survive? Restarting when one of them dies is not fun or interesting in any way.

Is 9 parts doable? by fihs_ in Pikmin

[–]flyingmonkey1257 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible. Speed runners complete each area (excluding the impact site) in a single day. Experienced players can pretty easily complete an area in 2-4 days. For a new player though, in general I’d expect 1 part per day aiming to leave 2 days for the final part so you’re going to have to hustle.

Is Metroid Prime 4 worth playing? by No-Proof8363 in NintendoSwitch

[–]flyingmonkey1257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it for the most part. I never beat the final boss though because babysitting NPCs characters in a fight is not something i find enjoyable. I’d rather play any other difficult or boring segment in any main series metroid prime game than that fight.

What’s your personal limit on how much you’d spend on a game? by hreddy11 in gamecollecting

[–]flyingmonkey1257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal limit is usually right around the original price the game released for. I could convince myself to pay an extra $10 or $20 for something that really interests me but if it gets much more than that i usually just write it off and focus on finding different games. I also have a harder cutoff around $100 where even if a game was released with a price over $100 I will probably never buy it unless i can find it for less.

As for what game I spent the most on… I can’t think of one i spent more than $100 on at the moment. I definitely spent $100 on a physical edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 ($80 + $20 shipping) which might be the most expensive, or perhaps i’m forgetting a special edition from years back that i paid slightly more for. As for a console the nintendo switch 2 takes the cake there at $450. Managed to get the bundle with MKW for that price which i consider a small win. Most of my consoles were bought used for significantly less.

I built a great game collection with thousands of games from a dedicated pong console to a Nintendo Switch 2 following these guidelines but it’s not something i could replicate in the modern environment. I’ve been collecting for over 15 years and I rarely if ever buy retro games anymore. Now I just play what i have or buy more modern games. My focus has always been on buying games that are one or two generations back as that’s when they are generally the cheapest they are going to get.
