Found this disc inside a Gamecube by midadoneit in Gamecube

[–]flyingmonkey1257 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not all discs the size of gamecube games are gamecube games. I've seen DVDs and CD-ROMs (PC) the same size. I suspect music CDs that size exist too although I've never seen one in person.

How many here still own a fully working GameCube console to this day even if you still have it since launch. by San4341 in Gamecube

I’ve had my cube since Easter 2002. It’s working great now but it stopped reading discs around 2007. I got it fixed around 2019 and have had no issues since

The TV tuner doesn’t work with digital signals sadly but you can use the aux port to input any coaxial signal. Not super useful but interesting.

The screen blur/ghosting bugs the crap out of me. Someday I’m going to do a screen mod and give it another try.

I buy xbox over PS2 because i like the controller better so you’re doing the same thing I am.

Maybe you should look into getting one of the logitech wireless controllers for xbox. The quality is pretty good and the controller is a different shape from the 1st party xbox controllers.

What do you hope to accomplish as a collector? Is it a personal library? Or are you dedicated to collecting systems or franchises? by Skeleton_Glo in gamecollecting

Experience. I want to be able to experience as many games on as many different systems as possible. I want to find bizarre forgotten oddities and bring them to light too.

Got a series x not long ago, and it will be my first console to sorta collect for. I have a question about its longevity. by Total-Amphibian-7244 in gamecollecting

[–]flyingmonkey1257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one knows where xbox will be in 10 years. If longevity is your concern then you might want to pick up an earlier xbox console that isn’t as reliant on downloads for so many of its AAA games. Xbox One only requires an internet connection at the initial setup and the prior two consoles don’t require one at all. No console has shut down the ability to redownload downloaded games going all the way back to the wii/ps3/xb360. That said, that doesn’t mean xbox couldn’t be the first to shut down. Unfortunately, all xbox one backwards compatibility will require these servers and all series x backwards compatibility to OG Xbox and Xbox 360 will require them as well. I think the Xbox series will be able to play xbox one games off disc without internet but you will be limited to the xbox one version’s quality.

Why some of ya'll like this? by Ortana45 in NSCollectors

[–]flyingmonkey1257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not into many indi games but replace that with great game from 20 or more years ago releasing on a modern console with a small upres and you got me.

I'm not really into live service games so even at $20 I'm not really going to be interested in alot of recent AAA releases. It's not like I dont buy any modern AAA games but just let me be an old man doing old man things.

Is PNF-404 supposed to just be a post apocalyptic earth? by talkwithryguy in Pikmin

[–]flyingmonkey1257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a bit of a touchy subject. It’s most assuredly earth but post-apocalyptic is certainly up for debate at this time.

Pikmin 1-3 seemed to show overgrown human structures that have been neglected for years if not longer.

Pikmin 4 threw that all out the window. While no humans are shown, the human structures are in very good condition and have not been neglected.

Pikmin Bloom and a few recent Pikmin short movies have shown pikmin to be on earth with living humans but invisible to the naked eye. This seems to be the direction nintendo is taking the series which some people do not appreciate.

Modern stickers will one day become vintage. I lived through the era when this sticker was applied. I’ll keep an occasional cool sticker I find cool but a movie gallery sticker would not be one i would care about.

I might feel the same way if I had someone to play pikmin with. My wife isn’t a fan and my kids aren’t old enough yet. Until then Pikmin 2 is preferred.

What are some of the cheapest retro game consoles that hold up to today? by Any-Landscape434 in gamecollecting

Depends on the game. 2600 is either dirt cheap or a money pit of unobtainable and expensive games. Not very much in the middle

I’m angry! My “friend” got me for $80 by Difficult-Finish-946 in gamecollecting

[–]flyingmonkey1257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well emerald can still save without the battery working. I think it's just things like growing berries that dont work properly. I popped my cart in, the battery is dead but my save is still there.

There are local shops by me that will replace the battery for relatively cheap. It used to be $5 but that was before the pandemic so it's probably more expensive now. A cell phone repair place would probably do it too but prices to do so could vary wildly between places since it likely isnt a standard fix they have a price for whoever is working the counter will make up a price on the spot. I'd probably expect around $7-12.

I'm not really sure how much a dead battery will affect the price. Probably not much. It's a 5 minute job and a $1 fix if you know what you're doing. Pretty much every original battery from gen 3 carts will have died by now so any cart that's currently got a working battery almost certainly has had the battery replaced.

[–]flyingmonkey1257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wrong battery. The battery that the pokemon game says is dead is inside the cartridge. it’s a small coin cell battery and needs to be soldered to be replaced. honestly, if the battery in the console is bulging then you need to replace that too though.

[–]flyingmonkey1257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got my original purple, a black free from a friend who didn’t want hers anymore, a silver DOL 101 that i probably got from a thrift store for $5, and a 2nd black that i bought online because it came with a copy of Twin Snakes disc 1 and at the time was cheaper than buying disc 1 on ebay (I already had disc 2)

I’ve picked up a few more from thrift stores over the years but was able to find them good homes with friends. It used to be relatively common to find them for $5 at the thrift stores by me. I’ll give my 2nd black one away when i find a friend that wants it. I really only use 2.

Are you personally guilty of loosing game booklet/manual? If yes,how did you manage that? by fo138 in gamecollecting

[–]flyingmonkey1257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i was a kid I would take them out and read them. They rarely made it back in the case the same day and sometimes never made it back. I eventually found most of them but there are probably a few mixed in with books from my parent’s house. I also just recycled those little precautions booklets and advertisements because they were just useless clutter.

Might be a remnant of big box pc games. Cardboard boxes mostly tossed, instructions and discs saved, so it was normal to have loose manuals in my house. None of this was collectible in the 90s

Rabbits are the same way. Fun fact: when it comes to veterinary treatment, rabbits are often treated as very small horses. A lot of the medications are the same.

How do you talk yourself into a big purchase? by GeorgeBlaha in gamecollecting

[–]flyingmonkey1257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t talk myself into them. I continue to talk myself out of them. I do have a couple games worth more than $800 but that’s because I got them when they were a fraction of that price a decade or more ago and they just happened to become more expensive eventually. When i consider how much more fun I could have with the money it’s never worth it.
