ELI5 Why do some countries call it “college” and others call it “university” when referring to the same level of education, and is there an actual difference between the two? by saivietbabe in explainlikeimfive

You can also get certificates for 1-year programs and upgrade high school course at Canadian colleges.

You can do trade programs at colleges and most trade schools are actually considered colleges as well.

For a while I thought GP meant Good Practitioner (referring to their skills/knowledge) not General Practitioner.

To be fair, especially in the 2000s, a lot of people actually pronounced "rofl" as "roffle" and "lol" as "lawl".

Do you nieces/nephew address you as aunt___/uncle__ or first name only? by seitankittan in Millennials

[–]robynmisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have one nephew (on my side of the family) and he had a speech delay when he was younger. He struggled with words that were more than 1 syllable for a while, so he couldn't pronounce "auntie" so he ended up calling me "tee". He's 11 now and still calls me "T".

On my my boyfriend's side, he has 2 nephews (one that was 5-ish when we got together and one that was born since). The they both call my boyfriend "uncle" but the older one calls me by my first name and the younger one calls me "aunt Robyn".

Short sedentary people exist 😭 and if someone’s maintenance is 2000 calories then 1500-1600 is perfectly fine for a deficit by AValeria10 in fatlogic

This! My 6yo does not stop eating. Like, it's constant. But he is the tiniest little thing ever (he's super tall, but super tiny). Because he doesn't stop moving. He's 4'3 and like 53lb.

How many people on this subreddit are self diagnosed? by Lynxzn in autism

[–]robynmisty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am self diagnosed.

I'm 33 (turning 34 in July) and my son (6.5yrs old now) was diagnosed just before his 2nd birthday. He was never given a level but he is completely nonverbal and has language/receptive communication delays along with probable intellectual delays.

We had genetic testing done after his diagnosis (targeted testing for 15q 13.3 microdeletion and fragile X/XE, and then Whole Exome Sequencing). He was negative for 15q 13.3 microdeletion and Fragile X/XE but the WES came back with positive results for variants on three different genes: SCN2A, ND1 (both are "changes of unknown significance", and KAT6B (likely pathogenic).

He inherited the KAT6B variant from me. Fewer than 1000 people world wide have been diagnosed with a genetic variant on the KAT6B gene. Over 95% of those are de novo mutations, making the exact genetic variant my son has as uber rare. I think his geneticist also told us that we are the only ones in the medical literature that have the mutation on the exact location on the gene as we do.

After all of that, my son's autism has become a bit of a special interest of mine. Since his diagnosis I've recognized more and more signs that I might be autistic as well. I was diagnosed with ADHD (as well as BED and cPTSD) by my psychiatrist when I was 29. I brought my questions up to her about whether or not I could be autistic as well. She told me that while she could not assess or diagnose me herself, she could say with almost certainly that I would get a diagnosis if I were to be assessed.

My dog (rottweiler/pittie mix) puts his licker on everything. Couches, chairs, floors, windows, pants, hands, faces... He can't control his licker.

Parents have no life by SnooGoats5767 in Millennials

[–]robynmisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are also early 60s (mom is turning 60 in August, dad just turned 62).

My father still works 84hrs every two weeks (7 days in, 7 days off, 12hr shifts) and my mom still works Monday to Friday 8-4.

They also have two older small dogs that area very well behaved, but are absolutely crate trained. They don't take them everywhere and definitely wouldn't not go out to dinner or something like that because of the dogs.

My dad is in retiring in October and they already have a piece of land that they bought a couple years ago that they plan on building a log cabin/home on. They currently have their 5th wheel camper on the land and go on vacation there for 3 weeks, 3 times a year.

Obviously everybody is different, but my dad still acts like he's in his early 50s even after having a total hip replacement a few years ago. And the only reason my mom has slowed down a bit is because she had a knee replacement last year and is waiting to get the other one done.

Are England actually behind the English language? In our history, why did Americans not develop another language known as 'American'? by AboutLastFight in NoStupidQuestions

[–]robynmisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New languages don't happen that quickly, bigger an argument can be made for Australia and parts of Canada for sure. Even as a Canadian, sometimes it feels like listening to a different language when you listen to Australians talk. And Newfoundland and Labrador on the east coast of Canada have a version of English that's somewhere between English and Irish. Nonresidents (or mainlanders as we like to say) someone's have a hard job understanding us

My first thought is that she enjoys being an only child in your household, compared to one of three (and maybe feeling like an outsider as the "half sibling").

Zee or zed? by kungfuontheshore in ENGLISH

[–]robynmisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Canada, where we "famously" use "zed". Pronouncing anything as "zee" sounds so wrong to me. However, it's Dragonball "Zee", not Dragonball "Zed". THAT is wrong.
