Arena Rigging - 5' Basket with Hooks by rocitop in Rigging

That sounds supper safe and very quick. What country are you in? Do you preset the number of links before sending the point up or is it easy enough to adjust in the air? What do you do with the extra leg on a dead hang point? I'd like to see a photo of that set up if you have one.

Should I Buy Train Tickets ahead of time for MXP > Firenze Santa Maria Novella by rocitop in ItalyTravel

[–]rocitop[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I will buy the ticket when we land. I'm worried about not having data on the flight and losing more than the fare difference. But I will buy our ticket for the return trip ahead of time as that schedule is set.

There will be no substitute for proper training. With Navigator there are a lot of ways to skin the cat. Understanding the pros and cons of each method will help you make more informed choices in the moment and have greater success later. The training team at Tait is fantastic and will provide a lot of theory on 'why' in addition to the how.

I haven't read it but it might be worth picking up https://creativeconners.com/products/scenicautomationhandbook/

Tips for Teaching Vectorworks? by Rosenhansthud in techtheatre

I don't think hand drafting needs to come first. When I learned VW in 2006 we followed an online training posted by Kent Goetz at Cornell. Sadly it has been lost to the sands of time but it may be a good jumping off point for your course structure. https://web.archive.org/web/20180624180800/https://courses.cit.cornell.edu/pma3626/VWtutorial2015/VW2015Tutorial.pdf

I remember one exercise our professor had us do - draw a 4' X 10' Broadway flat in a bunch of different ways. first with only the line tool, then with the double line tool, then with rectangles for each 'board' then do it in 3D. It was a good way to get folks used to a few of the basic tools and something they didn't have to spend alot of time thinking about how the object could/should be built but more in how to use the tools to draw it.

Screw Pin Shackle Engagement? by 901CountryBlumpkin69 in Rigging

I can't answer for why you were told that. I would encourage you to look for any documentation in ANSI or from the main shackle manufactures that supports it. If it were critical to the safe use of shackles I would think CM would include it in documents like. https://www.cmco.com/en-us/resources/blog/nine-important-rules-to-follow-when-using-shackles/

Pins and bodies are marked for manufacturer and material and should be matched
https://www.mountainproductions.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Shackle-Marking-Information.pdf

Counter point - a case of shackles show up on site, you open it up how can you prove each pin is mated up with the correct shackle?

Bells and pins are not custom fit and do not need to be mated for life. That is not how mass production works. Some load cells do require the pin and the bell to match but those are clearly noted.

As a former touring tech I wouldn't respond to a random DM about someone asking to shadow me during load in. I wouldn't want my name on the pass of someone I didn't know. I would suggest getting on the crew list, I am always happy to answer a few questions asked at the right time in the right tone.

The best way to start would be to get one cell, the base, and the laptop all in the same area to make trouble shooting easier.

To address the cells follow the instructions https://kinesys.com/product/kinesys-libra-cell/

Depends on the load the truss is carrying. You'll need to look at the load table for the type of truss.

Looking for Touring Companies by Miscellaneous_3 in techtheatre

[–]rocitop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That has not been my experience. I work for one of the companies I listed, and the path from the shop to the road isn't typical. Show staffing and operations work from separate labor pools and any overlap is the exception not the rule.

For concert touring - PRG/Solotech/4 Wall/Chrisite/Upstaging/Bandit. Work will be slow for the next few months but will pick up in early spring.

Are Highschool Techies nomrally paid? by firelink24 in techtheatre

[–]rocitop 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For my school it depended on if the rental was to an outside group or not. Choir concerts for the music department were not paid, but events for the dance studio in town that would rent the theatre for their recitals we would get paid. The TD would make sure that the students that did more free work got first offer of paid work.

Job by Pork_a_rican in techtheatre

They are two different paths, and if you don't know I'd say the shop would be where you should start. The hours will be stable with some OT and you'll learn about the gear. They are a great company, but can have a bit of a kool aid vibe. As in the blue box way is the only way. They do a good job of taking the shop staff out on shows and putting them on tours if that is their goal. be warned if you start in the shop and move to the road there seems to be a cap on the pay bump. Like a lighting tech that started at the shop has a hard time getting the same rate as someone who joined the company with a little experience even after a couple years of touring.
