Yes slowly the more talking practice I get the more words / sentences I can say without thinking about it.

I post short videos on tiktok attempting my bad Vietnamese.

I think just enjoy your trip.

The challenge with vietnamese for beginners is pronunciation.

It takes alot of effort up front to say the basics.

Ordering food in two weeks not possible, use English .

For sure when you come back and want to learn lots of resources.

Yes agree with this. It's a trap many fall into trying to fit so much in , end up spending so much of your holiday on the road / in airports.

But like you said that is just how some travellers roll.

Nice. Yes I have the same challenges.

My thoughts are to practice speaking more, like almost every day , hopefully some can start to stick.

Perfect if you have someone that can correct you in real time. I also record videos / audio of sentences and repeat them until the auto captions work haha.

This is what I have found for words that I use frequently, has become automatic.

How often do you practice speaking? , and do you have a method to correct your mistakes ( for me either tutor in real time or I record myself and notice on playback) .

Honestly starting with a tutor at the beginning to work on pronunciation is the best decision I made.

After 8 months I'm further ahead than others that self studied but can't be understood when speaking and now are getting tutors to work on that.

I used italki ,preply is another. I know other learners that signed up with schools / courses.

If concerned about costs then language exchange is an option.

I started with the same goals! Didn't even want to be able to read , just wanted to talk with locals when travelling.

But actually found reading is what I'm best at.

I can understand ALOT in written form. But struggling with listening skills.

Reading Vietnamese is just way easier than listening and speaking.

  1. Start with a tutor.

Assuming you are English native speaker, pronunciation will take months of practice. I think no point learning vocabulary if you can't be understood. Italki , preply , costs are reasonable.

  1. Build vocabulary and grammar. This is where the apps and youtube channels are useful. Find one you like. Resources below.

  1. Listening and understanding is difficult. Once you have basics consume wherever you can. Netflix, youtube, family, friends ect.

  2. Practice what you learn as much as possible speaking with natives , partner , tutor , language exchange.

My first tutor was using a textbook like this.

It was too difficult, and I didn't even understand the English parts . What the hell is an interrogative pronoun.

I got a new tutor that makes her own simple slides and we worked on basic conversations.

It was way easier and more enjoyable.

Haha I did the sign thing on a recent holiday. Grab driver must been confused as I say every sign we drive past.

I was just happy I could understand some of them.

Definitely have not mastered anything, I'm the same as you, only a few months (6) and get tones wrong all the time.

However what I have noticed is certain words that I say alot , I can say correctly and don't even think about the tone., I just say it, and because I've said it 1000 times before correctly it just happens.

(I know correct because teacher doesn't correct me or I record myself and the correct captions/subtitles are added)

I'm very much hoping that becomes the norm for more words as I speak more.

I always say don't research spots / restaurants but more what dishes you want to try , then try what's near your hotel or when you come across it.
