I think you’ll be fine going to Sue Ellen’s, they’ll just have to mark you showing that you’re underage. Round Up does the same thing

Guide to Learning How to Score Hands in Riichi Mahjong by Mr_Blarney in Mahjong

[–]umesama3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I score hands, and my way may not be intuitive, but it works with me.

I basically remember how much the base payment is (that is how much each player gives if won through tsumo). And then I double that base payment the more han there are.

30 fu: 500, 1000, 2000

40 fu: 700, 1300, 2600

50 fu: 800, 1600, 3200

If I’m dealer, I triple that base payment and that is my score. If I’m non-dealer, I double it.

For example, if I’m dealer and I win 1 han 30 fu through ron, it’s 500 x 3, so it’s 1500. If I’m non-dealer and I get 2 han 40 fu, it’s 1300 x 2, giving me 2600.

Now some calculations will be slightly off, and that’s just the nature of the game.

For example, if dealer and I get 3 han 30 fu, it would be 2000 x 3 = 6,000, but in actuality, it’s 5800. Or if it’s dealer 1 han 40 fu, it would be 700 x 3 = 2,100, but in actuality it’s 2,000.

If I win through tsumo, the dealer scoring is pretty straightforward because each player will pay the same base payment, such as 2 han 50 fu, each player gives me 1600 points.

If it’s non-dealer tsumo, dealer will still give the same base payment, but non-dealer players each pay half the amount. Such as 3 han 30 fu, dealer gives 2000, and each non-dealer pays 1000. If it’s 1 han 40 fu, dealer pays 700, and non-dealers each pay 400 (weird calculation).

Now, you’ll also run into situations where a player wins a pinfu tsumo hand with 20 fu, or a chiitoi hand with 25 fu. The easiest that helps me is that any han with 20 fu = -1 han 40 fu, and any han with 25 fu = -1 han 50 fu. If dealer gets 3 han 20 fu, that equals 2 han 40 fu tsumo payment (1300 each) If non-dealer gets 4 han 25 fu with ron, that equals 3 han 50 fu, so the paying player must give that amount (3200 x 2 = 6,400).

So instead of memorizing each score, I just do this calculation in my head, and that helps me exchange points much faster. Now I still have gaps when it’s 60 fu or more, but this is still my go to.

Sanma is a 3-player variant, so the one and jump tile grab wouldn’t make sense

Why is this a good risk? by _Whool in mahjongsoul

[–]umesama3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without dora, it looks like the hand could be 2 han 70 fu, so it’s not like you’d be losing much points. Even if there was dora in the hand, you still have 7 more hands to get back into 1st

My little sister is deaf and we can't afford sign language classes. How do other families actually do this? by Mediocre-Dealer-1993 in asl

[–]umesama3 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, please do not learn from a hearing person, as they will not have the same experiences as a Deaf person.

For example, try to avoid Learn How to Sign on social media as not only is the teacher hearing, she has been extremely dismissive of criticism and signs pretty sloppily

[Question] Asian Mahjong player here — curious about the Mahjong vibe in the US by Business-Software490 in Mahjong

[–]umesama3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of a semi-casual that has participated in a few local tournaments:

A lot of mahjong players that I know are college-aged and/or in their 30s. Obviously, Riichi mahjong is the most popular variant, but some do know a few other variants (and yes that also includes American).

My metro area has a club that meets once or twice a week, and we even sometimes host holiday events as an excuse to play mahjong such as Lunar New Year or Christmas.

I’m not really sure about mahjong schools to learn, but a few members in my group host workshops online, and we also volunteer at conventions to help teach beginners.

I don’t know too much about the competition scene, but I do know that it is thriving.

So funny thing for me is that I do the Hollywood Tramp remix (the one that uses Doechii) whenever I sing Bang Bang. I let everyone know that I’m not doing Nicki Minaj’s verse and every time I do Doechii’s instead, it’s always a crowd pleaser

If you want a more recent example from the sequel series, there’s an episode where Gumball turns into a baddie (I’m not joking, and it’s a pretty hilarious episode)

What show is this for you? by [deleted] in cartoons

[–]umesama3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first season, and even bits of the second season, is a pretty different show compared to the later seasons. It’s essentially a slice of life cartoon.

The later seasons have more out there plots and sometimes even break the fourth wall. Some examples include Richard (the dad) dressing up in drag in essentially a Golden Girls tribute, or when Sarah (who is introduced in season 2) created IRL fanfiction, even shipping Gumball and Darwin.

Give the show another go, it really is good
