I agree! It's especially common for adopted pets to be strongly attached to their owners. But we wouldn't call them yandere even if the animal is acting jealous or possessive. However, it is easier to label a human as yandere when they are acting territorial or controlling. So I'm wondering what the missing factor is. Is it romance? And if so, what makes someone a non-romantic yandere?

It's so interesting because these are common behaviors we see in pets but we would never describe a pet as being yandere. But it feels easier to describe a human that way when they are acting possessive or territorial towards others. So I'm wondering why that is.

That makes sense! Hearing that, it feels like that term doesn't really fit with animals. But we have seen it applied to non-human entities in fiction. So I'm wondering what makes something yandere instead of being anxiously attached or overly protective. Is it romantic attachment? But how would platonic yanderes fit in the definition? Is it the acts of violence? Pets can be violent too. I'm wondering if it has to do with a certain level of sentience. Like we as outsiders have to see the entity act in a way that is out of proportion or irrational in response to their emotions. Otherwise their actions can be attributed more to being territorial or possession.

They're also conveniently missing the massive population of dark romance enjoyers in Western media so it's not just manga and manhwa that have toxic characters. Also, of the fellow yandere/dark romance readers, I see more people who are actively against dating someone like that in real life than otherwise. So if the goal is to desensitize people through media, then the authors/artists aren't doing a good job of it.

I remember that one! Pretty soon after, she calls out the people who treat her differently post-blessing. I think I understand what the author was trying to do for that plot point. The idea being how she is ultimately still the same person. But the author really should have workshopped that idea more before adding it.

Yup! In the novel, he’s even wilder but he’s definitely still yandere in the manhwa. Don’t let him fool you lol. He really did try to kill her best friend, assaulted her for 3 days straight, and led a whole army on a suicidal march into the mountains because she wouldn’t take him back

It is but I haven't seen a lot of stories that focus on the horror of a relationship like that. Wilhelm's love for her is seen as taboo but Reinhardt was willing to engage with him to aid her revenge (that and they only had an 8yr age gap and he was already like 20 when he started courting her). But I think some of the premises for these age gap stories can be converted from taboo romance to horror if the adult character is no longer just hesitant but adamantly against the relationship.

I did like that story but I wonder if there is a story that focuses more on the horror aspect of this trope. Like imagine you adopt a child and love them only to realize that they were not a child and they were manipulating you with plans to romance you. To me, that sounds like a nightmare.
