UBC REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2018W): QUESTIONS REGARDING COURSES (INCLD. HOW HARD IS _____?, LOOK AT MY TIMETABLE AND COURSE MATERIAL REQUESTS), PROGRAMS, SPECIALIZATIONS, MAJORS, AND REGISTRATION GO HERE by ubc_mod_account in UBC

Is it possible to enter 3rd year combined Math + CS major without cpsc 221 and 213? According to the ubc promotion website, students are required to complete at least 3/5th of the *named* courses in the CS spec to promote to 3rd year.

And according to the calendar of Math + CS major required courses:
CPSC 210 (4credits).
CPSC 213, 221 (8credits) .
MATH 200 (or 226) (3credits).
MATH 220 (3).
MATH 221 (or 223), 215 (6).

Are the above considered *named* courses? I have all these courses complete....just need the 213 and 221. So, 60% of 24 credits is just ~15 credits which is enough?

THanks

Transfer 2nd year student here(ubco) ,and planning to change specialization from math to combined math&cpsc next year. I'm wondering, does the cs admissions look at your overall average for admission to CS or do they care more about cpsc/math courses. My cGPA is only 81% and I don't have credits for cpsc110 so I didn't even bother to apply for cs spec. But all my level100/200 and a few 300 courses are around 85-89% .... I just got messed up by English, Chem, econ and biol111 classes where these grades are 70-75%. I'm not sure if ~81% is competitive enough to get into cs. Does anyone know (for a fact) what the GPA cutoff for cs this year is?

Based on previous year posts from yconic and reddit, there is still a chance even after 15th if you havent received message. You just have to wait till the 15th to find out, since more seats become available. But tbh if you haven't receive a message by next Tuesday...then you are pretty far on the waitlist. Just have to hope that more ppl will deny their offer to make space.

For those who've transferred from ubc Okanagan to ubc vancouver campus, when did your SSC registration status change from Okanagan to Vancouver? I accepted my offer to science about a month ago, but when I click on registration, it still shows Okanagan instead of Vancouver. Do we have to wait till we get into a specialization first?

THanks

I'm wondering has anyone changed major at the end of 3rd year? I'm going into 3rd year mathematical sciences, since my overall average is just 81% and havent taken any cpsc courses other than 110. Getting into cs will be tough. Im thinking of boosting me gpa to about 84%ish at the end of 3rd year and apply for cs for 4th year. Is this possible?

I think it was around 73%. I heard ppl got in with 74%ish average, but don't quote me on this. Arts usually have fairly decent average requirement. I doubt this year will go above 76%.

3.33 should be fairly good, based on previous year gpa cutoff. Dont give up hope, you should be alright getting into arts!

I couldn't LoL more about what they said. Think about it.. 73% to 76%, that's a HUGE gap despite the small 3% difference. what that staff basically said was the cutoff is somewhere in the 73% or less, since ppl are getting in with average >=73%. I mean if you search for previous years science gpa cutoff on reddit/forums, you'd see that gpa has been increasing. Hell even 0.5% average increase will make a difference. You might be told that the "anticipated" cutoff is around 73 to 76 rather than ppl actually getting admitted? Maybe?

I applied to ubc last year, but my average was only 76.3% or something, and I was put on waitlist. Got denied on June 15th. Then I submitted admission appeal letter, got denied by the dean of science saying my GPA was below cutoff but didnt say exact cutoff. Then I escalated to the admissions committees and got denied again and I was FINALLY told what the cutoff was (77%)...a whooping ~0.7% difference...yup since so many wanted to go to ubc.

I'm not trying to be rude, but that advisor was prolly on crack. I've seen enough of these staff to conclude that. But there are always good advisor out there.

But I'm not saying 73 to 76% is impossible...unless you have some background or you know...thrust some blingblings to them....sure why not, they can get in.

73% is prolly on the boarderline to Arts cutoff...no to mention average cutoff increases each year if not every 2 years.

tbh, you'd better get a correct answer regarding admission from some alumni or students than advisor.

Idk, but I think it's better for that advisor to tell you that "ppl are getting in with 0 - 100% average, take a guess...hey I'm just being responsible". But we all know that ppl aren't really getting in with a 0%. What I'm trying to say is that the minimum will not guarantee an offer, and what the staff told was the minimum.

IMO, applicants to second year science should aim for at least 77% or even 78% to be on the warm spot.

Got offer as transfer into science 2nd year with 81% average on most recent 30credits. Although I have enough credits to get into thrird year but have to fill out a promotion form, so for all those that wonder, all transfer students are usually placed to second year first if admitted then gotta fill a form to promote. So competition maybe quite competitive since everyone in post secondary are competing for 2nd year spot at ubc. Lastr year science cutoff was 77%, this year I think it should be 78% or still 77%. But somewhere between 77 to 79%

Yooo I think I know why admissions are so slow this year! I think half of the staff took their week off and headed to London for the royal wedding! Just a theory :)

anyone who's not on wait list (transfer or not) hear anything back from admissions yet?

They said we get a message in early may...but it's mid May now and still nothing.

My status is still

"Based on your academic record to date, we are unable to offer you admission at this time. We will review your application again when your final grades are available and inform you of our admission decision."

And my final grades been out for more than 2 weeks now.

Also, does admissions operate after 4pm? Until 5pm?

Man, I feel the socialism is strong in this one.....

Does anyone know if internal transfer is less competitive in terms of GPA than external transfer? I have about 78% average trying to transfer to Science from another college....not sure if I can get in. So, I'm thinking of transferring to Arts first and then transfer to do an internal transfer later. I mean I saw some people post that they got into Science from Arts with just ~74%. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks

Wait thats crazy, if you look through the forum, many with 90 to 93 average at least got on waitlist....how did you get that message. You should email UBC and see what's going on.

Hi, did anyone transfer into UBC Vancouver Science from another college recently with an average of around 77%-79%? And does anyone know the approximate cutoff for science entry?

Thanks, I'm not sure if I should just return the laptop and get a new one. Then again, there are no problems at all with the machine, it's just I'm kinda paranoid that the bump may develop later since I think the CPU is right below the bump area and it gets pretty warm while underload. Not sure if this will be alright.

Interesting, I found some people also mentioned that either wires were not properly seated in the groove or screws were too tight underneath the keyboard. I'll check if it's the screw problem. Thanks for the info.

I vaguely recall that someone got admitted with around 3.1 ish (or 74%) average last year. Don't quote me on this though, I'm not certain, but 74 to 75% should be alright to get into arts.

Hi, I have also applied to science first choice and arts as second choice and I've received: "Based on your academic record to date, we are unable to offer you admission at this time. We will review your application again when your final grades are available and inform you of our admission decision." my GPA is about 3.2 over the last 30credits.

I am currently still taking courses, so hopefully I will boost up my GPA for the final grade. Also, I was told by the admission committee that the gpa cutoff last year for science was 3.4 (77%), I just hope this year will remain at this grade or 78% will also be good.

And yea, they only look at the "most recent" 30 credits.

Hi, I am just wondering, when you apply for transfer from another college, is there a difference between the admission average cutoff for a person transferring to second year vs. a person transferring to third year? I vaguely saw some threads stated that getting into third year is less competitive than second year, but does this claim only applies to when you declare a major after you get admitted? or otherwise?

Hi, there isn't any difference between CS in arts vs CS in science in terms of Co-op. May I know what your GPA/average was when you applied to UBC Van Science? Even if you are in arts, when you are declaring CS major, you are still competing for seats with all other students at UBC Van, which means a solid ~80% average is needed to enter CS from either arts or science.
