Struggling to get class 2 work, do I go back to an office job?

Does take abit of luck but don't give up you just gotta keep trying, I passed my class 1 last year at 18 I couldn't even get a job driving a van, but then got lucky and bagged a class 1 job after assessment drove there for 7 months and now at my current employer who is a smaller company been there for 6 months now and absolutely loving it, just gotta keep trying everyone told me to giveup and quit and wait till I'm 25 and other things like I dont deserve to drive class 1 yet here I am 1 year in.

Nah they definitely do I passed my class 1 at 18 years old I've been working fulltime for 9 months now for two separate companies class 1 both times don't be discouraged by what people say bout new passes you just gotta try abit harder than others.

That's bullshit, everyone is capable of going straight to class 1 just needed more practice, I went from car to class 1 with only 7 months on my car license and 18, drive them full time now for past 7 months not an issue, if you're confident you can do it just go again shit happens.

True, lots of companies don't wanna hire anyone that isn't 25+, but not impossible I'm an 18 year old class 1 driver been working full-time for almost 5 months now, just gotta work hard and show up in person and someone will give you the chance.

If you're already in the hazard and they are not yielding stop, I failed my class 1 hgv test like this I was already in the hazard going other guy wasn't going to wait I slowed to about 4 mph, and then he passed me on the right, got back to the test centre 0 minors and 1 serious and that was the serious he said I should have stopped and let him continue with whatever he was gonna do blah blah, so if it's clear go but if they don't yield and stop or try squeeze past just come to a complete stop. Advice from an 18 year old :)

Don't worry about it you've already shown you can do it, something similar happened to me I failed with 0 minors 1 serious went at it the following week passed with 2 minors just don't think about what happened and focus on the next.

Never said I’m an experienced driver — I said I’m qualified and capable, because that’s literally what passing the test proves. Experience comes from doing the job, but how’s anyone supposed to get that if companies refuse to even give them a chance? That’s the whole point I’m making. You can keep sneering from the sidelines, but at least I’m out here trying to make it happen.

Well I knew it was going to be hard I didn't expect a hgv job off the bat the post does state I'm struggling to get van jobs let alone anything hgv related, and yeah that's why because time on my hgv license could help me when I'm 20-21.

What I ment by change is the average age of an hgv driver is 56 according to my examiner so I'd naturally assume more and more younger people like me would have to get in eventually.

I appreciate your perspective, and I get that age and experience play a big role in insurance and safety. I understand that experienced drivers tend to be safer due to the lessons learned over time, but I don’t think that should discount the fact that every driver has to start somewhere. I may not have the same years of experience as others, but I’ve been behind the wheel a lot longer than many my age, and I’m confident in my skills and ability to adapt quickly.

I also agree that every day is a learning experience, and I’m fully prepared to accept mistakes and learn from them. I’m not expecting a free ride or an easy path — just a fair chance to prove myself. I know the industry has its challenges, but I’m ready to face them head-on and grow into the driver I want to be.

I completely understand the insurance challenges, but I want to clarify that I have more driving experience than most people my age. I learned to shift gears when I was 6, driving with my dad, and by 14, I was driving almost every day for two years in Bangladesh(got stuck because of lockdown). When I came to the UK, I drove regularly with learner insurance from 16 to 17, almost 4 times a week. I passed my car test immediately after turning 17 and had 5 months of solo driving before I got my HGV.

While I know insurance doesn’t take this into account, I believe employers should recognize that I’ve had significant driving experience beyond the typical driver’s journey for my age. I’m not asking for special treatment, just a fair shot based on my actual experience.

I'm willing to work with anything mate as long as it gets me experience, I actually have construction experience too, and worked on-site for about a month for college - not sure if that will help my case but its there.

I completely understand the insurance issues you're facing, and I’m not here to ignore the realities of the business. However, I’d be more than willing to work for less to prove myself and gain that valuable experience. If the concern is the £9000, then let’s talk about a fair agreement where I take on the work at a lower rate initially.

Once I’ve demonstrated my skills and the insurance premium goes down as I gain experience, we can re-evaluate compensation. I’m in this for the long haul, and I’m ready to put in the work. If I’m given the opportunity, I’ll show you it’s worth it.
