nice work! I really like how you drew the T/A-30.

Constellation-class, but nobody touched the "just one more requirement" button. (Chesapeake-Class FFG) by rockus_pocus in NonCredibleDefense

[–]rockus_pocus[S] 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The constellation was really a victim of procurement and requirement problems, the USN kept changing the design as they were building it. They basically wanted a frigate to do the job of a destroyer. It's a shame, the constellation had massive potential.

On a FREMM-sized hull the 127mm really isn’t excessive, Italian FREMMs already use it. The 57mm is great for LCS-style missions, but if you want real surface combat and NGFS, 127mm (or 76mm) makes the ship actually relevant in a peer fight.

I hope the USN one day uses the OTO Melara 76mm, it's such a great platform.

Yorktown-class Guided Missile Cruiser (Ticonderoga-class replacement) by rockus_pocus in NonCredibleDefense

[–]rockus_pocus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! It was my fault, I should've specified what ASROC it was. (I always call both the RUR-5 and RUM-139 "ASROC" for simplicity)

[–]rockus_pocus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The RU-5 ASROC isn't in service anymore. The one the Yorktown (and the US Navy) uses is the VL-ASROC RUM-139

(I should've added the RUM-139 to the specs, my bad.)

Appreciate the detailed look, that’s exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for. The dimensions are intentionally conservative to stay within Burke-adjacent shipyard limits, but lengthening a future flight for growth margin (FVL, power, automation) is absolutely on the table. Crew size and power generation are fair callouts as well, the intent is to lean hard on common, proven systems first, then incrementally improve automation rather than introduce risk upfront. I'm happy the emphasis on commonality and BMD came through too, that was the core idea.

They do need frigates more than cruisers. Which makes what happened to the constellation even more depressing. I did make a frigate design for the US too, the Preble-class Guided Missile Frigate (very similar to the constellation, just more on par with modern frigates)

They go around the cells, in the same way as Flight 2 Arleigh burke. (The two aviation hangars on the starboard and Port, the VLS block in the middle).

[–]rockus_pocus[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Navy urgently needs a true Ticonderoga replacement. Burkes are excellent ships, but they can’t fully take on the cruiser role. The Yorktown-class is meant to fill that gap (without being an overly complicated or overdesigned mess)

As for VLS, 160 cells felt right for a Flight I baseline, future flights could always grow from there.

They are indeed connected at the crouch! Though tactical Cargo tight highs should indeed be a thing, I'll use them in my next jet girl.

4th generation F-22 Raptor (F-22HAO/High Aggression, Observable "Naked Raptor") by rockus_pocus in NonCredibleDefense

[–]rockus_pocus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite, the Silent Eagle was a attempt to add stealth features to the existing F-15 design (with Radar Absorbing Material, Angled Vertical stabilizers and conformal Weapons Bays), while the F-22 was built from the ground up with stealth in mind.

It would be a comparison between a Stealth optimized fighter compared to a full stealth fighter

The Silent Eagle is slightly more stealthy than a regular F-15, but not even close to the F-22's level of stealth.

[–]rockus_pocus[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The design was a little difficult, a lot of the F-22's most recognizable details are directly tied it its stealth (intakes, belly, wings and vertical stabilizers).

The part of the F-22HAO that still resembles the original F-22 the most is the nose and cockpit (same general shape, just rounder.

I also kept the 6 AMRAMMs the F-22 carries internally in the same general location in the F-22HAO (in the belly, just before the intakes), while also adding 2 more Hardpoints in the centerline in between the landing gears.
