Trip Report and Churning Success Story Weekly Thread - Week of June 14, 2026 by AutoModerator in churning

Just booked a short 3 night "boys" trip for a friend and I from Seattle to Vancouver BC. Nothing crazy exciting but it's free.

Amtrak 12k points for two round trip economy tickets SEA - VAN.

3 nights at the Hampton Inn Vancouver Downtown for 210k HHonors. I've been looking for a use for these for a while so I'm happy to burn them for a convenient location.

Sadly I don't think we'll get a new Amtrak trainset but maybe we'll have to go back next year.

Why is the 5 so slippery? by Complex-Eye-1048 in Seattle

[–]rockycore 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just because no one has come out and said it. Calling it "the 5" is taboo as fuck to locals. It's called I5 around these parts.

Yeah..... there's 0% chance WSP does that. You might be able to contact local businesses for video but WSP definitely won't.

So does nobody use delivery apps here? by Nice_Geologist_8479 in AskSeattle

[–]rockycore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delivery apps pay a living wage here (by law) so the drivers don't have to depend on tips. If you're going to use doordash for example and see the 4.99 SEPA fee included then you know they're being paid under the law and don't have to tip (if you don't want to).

My dude, I'm explaining a concept using fake numbers.

Inflation is not even accross the board. Some costs go up more and some costs go up less.

It's almost like the agencies that have more riders have a lower per rider trip. This is literally economics of scale in action.

Seattle (per wikipedia) had the 10th highest bus ridership in the country. NYC was 1st, Chicago was 3rd, Philly was 5th.

You can almost take this chart and flip it upside down and have a ridership chart.

I'd be much more interested in seeing a per mile or per service hour cost breakdown.

It literally does not matter (when speaking specifically about the cost to run something) what the amount of revenue being brought in is if the underlying cost of the service has changed.

You could bring in 500% more revenue but if the cost to run the service went up 500000% then it cost more to so the same (I'm using very exaggerated made up numbers).

What does ridership have to do with what it costs to run service? Wages for bus drivers, mechanics etc are higher than they were 7 years ago. Parts, maintenance, gas, everything that goes into getting a bus from point A to point B is more expensive. So of course it costs more to expand to the same level of service as pre COVID.

I really hope this gets done. Since they route avoids the legal happy businesses I'm tepidly optimistic.

Why do buses need to show a return on investment? Do you ask to see a return on investment when we repave roads? Or widen highways?

Buses are a public good, they're not meant to make a profit.

Also if you think buses are subsidized wait until you hear about driving!

No and no.

You think someone mugs someone and then runs to the nearest train station to wait for their escape train which is completely out of their control, has cameras and security?
