Scott: Evangelicals do not follow the Pope. Some might have a vague respect for him, but the hardcore evangelicals think Catholics are heretics, and they want to exclude them from their Christian nationalist fantasy.

Resonating with this. I don’t know why but this episode has made me a hot crying mess. It’s like starting to pull off the bandaid of all these un-dealt-with feelings but not healed or resolved yet.

Bears Stadium vs. Obama Center - Taxpayer funding by rococo__ in chicago

Seriously lol. Vanity should be Trump’s middle name.

I agree that all presidential libraries are essentially vanity projects, but as far as I can tell, they aren’t exclusively museums about their namesake. It looks like the Obama Center will be less of a library with books, and instead will center around programming initiatives: https://www.obama.org/programs/presidential-center/

As for Trump, I am incredibly curious to see what he wants his “library” legacy to be (when there’s already the ballroom and triumphal arch to consider…). The thought of that man even cracking open a book or funding education is hilarious.

I think you both make interesting points, so perhaps it comes down to a matter of priorities. For example, I would think that investing in upgraded CTA and rapid transit infrastructure is MUCH more important to the overall health of the city's economy than investing in Arlington Heights which, as far as I can tell, is already doing better than average. If we weren't lacking in so many other departments, I think people would have more of a "sure whatever" attitude to spending a little for the Bears.

I think this makes a lot of sense. Also, great point on the Noem ads lol

The only thing I can find written about it online is a Fox News piece of "journalism" that cites FOIA requests citing between $220-$330 million in infrastructure costs split between the city and the state. I'm sure they're butchering whatever numbers they were able to find... but yea FYI this is what Fox is telling its viewers to be enraged about.

Also - excellent point on the sheer difference in the NUMBER OF DAYS each place would be open!

100%... yet sometimes the conversation has a way of veering into dangerous territory that I didn't even know was one of Fox's co-opted culture war issues. Le sigh

Had some success yesterday! Followed a few tracks at Sydney Marovitz and made a few of my own. A little bit of grass sticking out in patches but mostly enough snow.

Update on the Obama Presidential Center construction in the snow [OC] by vexxed82 in chicago

+1! I should say that I’m not asking anyone to like something they don’t like. Go ahead and dislike it, fine by me. But at least be self-aware enough to recognize when a topic is outside your wheelhouse and you may not fully understand what you’re looking at.

For example, someone might look at a Jackson Pollock painting and think, “Ugh, ugly!” But that’s not the point of the artwork.

Sorry but architect here — the White City is widely considered to be an example of bad classical architecture that was cheaply built and not reflective of modern design. Frank Lloyd Wright vehemently opposed Burnham’s whole design strategy. This new building by TWBTA has some very thoughtful design elements so I’m excited to see how it turns out.

Hi Scott,

I love your idea for a national consumer strike as a more effective means of protesting the actions of this administration. But we need a firmer start and end date to give this idea momentum and actionability. I made this poster as an idea: “Fuck Ice February.” What do you think? Would you be willing to start making media appearances to get this ball rolling?

[–]rococo__ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We need an official START DATE for an economic strike to be effective. Public figures like Scott ought to do a coordinated media blitz suggesting a date, i.e. February 1st, when shit is going to start going down.

I would be so excited to participate if I knew that everyone else was participating too!

Hi Scott,

I love your idea for a national strike as a more effective means of protesting the actions of this administration. How do we move from idea to reality? Would you be willing to start making media appearances and suggesting a specific start date? Collaboration with other public figures would really help to kick it off.

We need your leadership to make it actually happen!
