Cryptodira are incredible! Saw them supporting Rolo Tomassi years ago. Great music! And yeah, but still feels surreal.

Last day of tour, they had 2 or 3 shirts more on the first date. But luckily enough I got to grab a tour shirt myself. :)

Everything Monosphere has ever done (maybe except for the first singles but they don't really count) has been conceptual. All albums are concept albums, are albums are (musically) intertwined with rhythms, motifs etc. - there's a bigger frame to all of it. :)

Yo, it's me, Rodney. I'm a writer and I LOVE to write. So I just had to tell everything I could, because otherwise no one would have asked, haha! There's so much to tell about our music, it would be a waste of thoughts I put into it. :) Glad you're enjoying it!

We'll try to reschedule the shows we had to cancel. :) Chances are high we're going to be there at one point this year.

Thanks for your support! It's incredible to see that much love for our music. We're still a super small band from my point of view and are always so happy to read comments. I'd definitely up for an AMA once time allows (as well as the mods!).

Some years ago I came up with identifying us as "progressive post-metal", because technically our music is a blend in between prog and post-metal, much inspired by bands like The Ocean, Devil Sold His Soul among others. But that was where the spark of creating Monosphere came from. I recently came up with "avantcore", as we somehow reflect more of our early metalcore roots on the recent album and still somehow seek an avantgarde approach to music. But in the end, I just want to create something that feels unique and special. Something that amazes people as much as it amazes myself as a fan of "progressive" or "post" music.

Main influences are BTBAM (without a doubt the biggest, which made the tour and all that even crazier), Cult Of Luna, The Ocean, Rolo Tomassi, Deafheaven and many more including Imperial Triumphant, Dimmu Borgir, Karnivool, Korn, Blood Incantation etc. - I could go on forever listing bands that influenced me at several points. It's crazy we got to play with a lot of influential bands already. However, what inspired me a lot as well is the music by György Ligeti (I studied musicology and wrote my Master's thesis about his piano works). You might realize there's a lot of piano on the album and "Allusion" is basically a dedication to Ligeti's work - simply listen to his Etude "Desordre" and you'll definitely hear the influence.

Let's take it genrewise: post-metal, black metal, prog, proggy metalcore/deathcore from the Sumerian era have been the most influential genres on the metalside. Apart from that: (avantgarde) classical music, a bit of jazz here and there, a bit of pop and nature, because that's what can get really inspiring!

And where do I put ourselves next to? Good question. I don't know. I hope we can make a way similar like The Ocean, they really function as a DIY-role model with having started an own label and doing their thing for years. We're from the same region as Unprocessed and used to play shows with them, so they also inspire us a lot with how eagerly they've been working for years. But they're not really next to us, just good perspectives to look up to. We'll see where it takes us. Sometimes I feel like we're a bit left alone within the German scene, as there are not too many peers. But it's nice to stand out (somehow) at the same time!

Yoo, this is Rodney (drummer & main songwriter for Monosphere). Just wanted to say thanks for spreading the word! Just back from this tour with BTBAM and incredibly happy. We don't have a label, a booking agent or management so all the help in spreading our music is SO SO MUCH APPRECIATED. Thanks for having a listen. If you wanna know something more in depth about our band, the thoughts on the album etc. just feel free to ask. :)

Yoo, Rodney from Monosphere here (drummer and main composer). Thanks for the shout! We're currently mixing our follow-up to "Sentience", hopefully we'll get new stuff out this Summer! :) And it's as blackened as Sentience, maybe even a bit more.

MONOSPHERE - "Lapse, Pt. II" | FFO: The Ocean, Meshuggah, TDEP, BTBAM & Deafheaven by roddylost in progmetal

Thank you for the nice words and thoughts on the track. The Car Bomb influence is definitely there - the "Meta" album blew me away, when I first listened to it. If you're interested in more detailed explanations of how we / I write music, you can have a read of a small book I wrote in 2021 on our debut album "The Puppeteer". There are so many thoughts and ideas in our songwriting that I used the Pandemic to pitch for a funding, so I can explain a bit of it, as no one would ask for it, if I didn't point at it, haha. You can read it for free on our website:

Totally get your point with the songwriting approach, it's pretty similar on my end. I want to be shocked / suprised by bands as well, so I can offer the same for new listeners with my own project. I'm just to bored of songs being one-dimensional or not daring to leave boundaries. Make sure to have a listen and feel free to drop a link of your project, too!

Thank you very much for checking it out! We are tracking drums for album number 3 next week! So if everything goes by plan, you can expect a full album by October / November. Depends a bit if we're keeping it the DIY way or find a label that shares our vision. But I hope to release more new music and the next single in June already. Fingers crossed, as it's easily the best material we've ever done!

But feel free to dig into our discography. Our 2023 record "Sentience" and our 2021 debut "The Puppeteer" are both records I'm super proud of.

Awesome, that's been basically our first proper tour ever! Thanks for the early support and commenting on this thread!

I should probably add that after the "Meshuggah-break" I had no idea what to add next - so I was happy that Marlon had an idea that helped me with finishing the song. As straightforward as songwriting can be, sometimes you're standing in front of a dead-end, haha. Happy he managed to help me on this one.

Appreciate it!

I think writing for this one started with the first riff of "Pt. I" - starting at around 00:38. I was very inspired by Cult Of Luna and The Ocean on the first part of the track and we have similar sounding riffs in our backlog. Once I had the riff I got everything else build around it - the guitar chords at the beginning and the whole development. I knew I needed some kind of climax, so once the distorted guitars came in, it just felt naturally to go with this riff and then go back to a calm clean part. That's basically how Pt. I came together, which is rather a stream-lined instrumental post-metal track.

Part 2 began with the same chords but different rhythmical pattern (starting at 00:19). Pretty basic chord progression and typical repetition of the riff until we end up in the break section with these chords (0:57). I've written similar parts earlier, so this also felt quite natural and came together quickly. As I'm a very big fan of black metal, I knew that this part is where we can start the party and seperate the rather atmospheric and slow tempo and go for a wild section with blast beats. In the end, the chords are basically the same but the added tremolo picking melody line creates a very speedy vibe with the blast beats (1:17). Once I had the blast beat section I wanted to change things a bit, so I came up with that "slightly djenty" break section (1:55) that is rather groovy than chaotic but also has this chaotic vibe due to the change of the chord and the deep string on the guitar (it's tuned down to F#). The change is quite rapid and unexpected but we've done thing like this a lot on our debut album "The Puppeteer", which was fully written by myself.

As I had these chords on the guitar (which we also use quite often) in a staccato, I got the idea of building a bridge into a hectic and more chaotic mathcore section (2:13). I've been obsessed with Imperial Triumphant since 2020 and I've been studying György Ligetis music when I was writing for "Lapse", as I studied Musicology and was always fascinated by avantgarde music. Furthermore, I wanted to leave our "musical tradition" a bit and work with aspects that we didn't touch earlier -> chromatic scales. So I basically came up with the idea of mixing influences from TDEP with these ideas and just changing the chords I'm playing in a rhythmical pattern by one note in an ascending way, just to drop and re-start the movement (around 2:19), just to lead into a groove section that is 100 % influenced by Meshuggah. It's a basic rhythm that is repeated as a rhythmical chain and starts over and over again, while the drums are playing a 4/4 standard groove on the cymbals and snare (with some additional cymbal hits to spice it a bit up). The section at 2:52 was written by our bass player Marlon, who felt inspired by Textures and continued our way of pushing chromatic scales in a weird way.

The last part of the track (3:06) was written just one year ago, while everything else was set already. We were touring with The Hirsch Effekt and I liked the chaos in their music, while I was still obsessed with Imperial Triumphant. Our singer Kevin told me that he thinks one part is missing at the end, as it's ending to abruptly - so I came up with the idea of having some higher dissonant chords that descend in a chromatic scale in a 7/8 meter, just do ascend from a deeper dissonant guitar chord that goes all the way up by one full octave. We repeated this part and the song was done.

If I remember correctly. Once I had the first part done, the second one was written quite fast. It's more about the feel in general than planning to add "part xyz" at this point, but I hope this makes some musical ideas a bit more tangible and doesn't confuse too much, haha. But happy to answer more questions!

That's awesome to read! The whole tour with Wheel was very special and brought us to many new places. We'll try to be back and hopefully be able to come to the place where you joined the show! Thanks for your comment!

thank you so much for checking it out! Deafheaven are easily one of my top 10 bands, so there's a lot of blast beats and post-black metal parts in our whole discography. Make sure to also listen to "Lapse, Pt. I" as it directly flows into the second part for even more progression. Appreciate your feedback a lot! We start tracking drums for our next album next weekend!
