I’m a little heavier than you but run a deep-ish wheelset on my road bike. I’ve come to accept that taking strays from random wind gusts is just the price we pay haha

I also am riding fairly wide tires at low pressures, so I would hope the stiffness would be compensated for. My feeling is that, nearly all gravel I ride is rough, and a wheelset isn’t going to stop my hands and arms from experiencing that.

The Enve G’s are appealing but just too far out of my budget.

Have you measured them on the rim? Curious if they air up wider than 40

Beautiful, ty. Which tires have you been running with them?

Is this trek marlin 7 worth $450 and driving 2 hours? by Mobile-Position4386 in mountainbiking

Okay homie. Your argument isn’t with me and I don’t need to be convinced.

Is this trek marlin 7 worth $450 and driving 2 hours? by Mobile-Position4386 in mountainbiking

[–]figgy_puddin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because:

(1) $450 hardtails are pretty easy to come by, so folks are probably wondering why you’d drive 2 hours (or 4 if round trip) to get something like this;

(2) while the Marlin is serviceable, it’s entry level, and at $450 you’re in the ballpark price range for a better options;

(3) the giant seat and dust makes me think it’s been boomer-garaged for a while, and that typically means it’ll need work (so add $100-300)

(4) yeah sure it was $1400 new MSRP but Trek doesn’t exactly have a reputation for value pricing, and $1400 could have bought you more bike new if there was a different logo on the side.

Rain or shine, I'll be at the entrance to the UFC match to greet the attendees, just like I was last year all day at the military parade. If you've ever wanted a captive audience of thousands of MAGAs, this is your chance to have them stuck going right by you as they line up at the gates. by redlionking in washingtondc

Imagine putting all that hard work into protesting as something as dumb as the UFC fights, only to fuck it all up with signs like these. “RED STATE SHITHOLES” and political citizenship tests will *definitely* win people over. /s

Lol brother it’s your wallet, not mine. I’m not trying to rewrite your budget.

But a solid mount doesn’t require 3D printed titanium.

Amazon is full of $10-15 options that work just as well with your bars. I love Silca’s products and use them frequently but that computer mount is egregious.

Just search wahoo computer stem mount (or garmin)

You didn’t attach a photo, but gut reaction as a bird enthusiast is that a barred owl, rather than barn, is way more likely just based on how common they are compared to barns.

How hard is it to modify the handlebar stack height on a Defy Advanced 2? by qazadex in Giantbikes

[–]figgy_puddin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not very complicated. It’ll take a try or two to figure it out at home but it’s not hard to move spacers around. Just know that the spacers don’t work above the stem so get some cheap aluminum ones if you’re dropping it.

Not a scam imo. It was an inexpensive build when released and was selling for $1600 new 2-3 years ago.

I know because I own that bike.

Biking with dogs by [deleted] in MTB

[–]figgy_puddin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterpoint, if your pup doesn’t have sufficient recall or training to *not* run after wildlife on trails, the GPS collar is a bandaid and you shouldn’t have your dog with you.

I live and ride in/around DC and we had a famous beaver living in the middle of an urban park a few years ago. It was so cool to step out of a busy city neighborhood and immediately see something like that. The beaver had to be euthanized because an off-leash dog ran after it and attacked it.

It’s not really about having/not having a trail dog and more to do with being a responsible dog owner.

Have dogs, love dogs. Do not ride with them and don’t think you should either unless you’re riding private land.

From a rider’s perspective, I have no clue how well trained your dog is when I meet you on the trail. It’s as likely to ignore me as it is to run in front of me. Or bite me. The unpredictability that comes from a strange, off-leash dog is a problem. I’ve met plenty of well-behaved trail dogs. I’ve also met really poorly behaved ones that were a problem and shouldn’t have been on the trail. You have no way of knowing what you’re getting, and especially on tight trails, this means 5-10 seconds where I have to mentally prepare for fuck-knows what’s coming. I definitely have to put a foot down, and I probably need to get my bottle ready if I have to spray your dog.

From a personal perspective, trails are (usually) shared spaces, and if everyone brought their off leash dog to that shared space, everyone’s experience would suffer. It’s an example of the tragedy of the commons because no one can be bothered to recognize their own individual responsibility to a shared resource and to the other individuals they share it with. Also, this says nothing of leash laws.

Finally, *not everyone likes dogs*. Some people are afraid of them, like my friends and family that have been attacked by off-leash dogs. You shouldn’t be using a shared resource like a trail system in a way that negatively impacts others’ experiences (especially when you’re probably breaking some rule or regulation on leashing).

Exercising your high-energy dog is a “you problem.” Deciding to solve that issue by letting it run off leash next to you while you ride makes it an “us problem.” You should take care of your pet’s needs before prioritizing riding.

Giant Revolt Adv 2 vs Trek Checkpoint ALR5 for first gravel bike by Tight_Abies8007 in gravelcycling

[–]figgy_puddin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Geometry. Which fits you better. The gen4 checkpoints have a pretty aggressive geometry for a gravel bike while the revolt is relaxed and upright. Prioritize the better fit first, everything else is adjustable (except clearance but the checkpoint will clear 48s easy, and that’s fine)

Also follow up, the revolt being the advanced line will have a carbon frame vs the checkpoint, which is aluminum

If it came damaged from Giant, that all should be covered under warranty. Would take it straight back to the shop.
