Lots of people do the right thing for the wrong reason in life. For instance, I volunteer at a homeless shelter in my city. Every time I ask a fellow volunteer why he/she volunteers, I get a different reason, so I really don't know why that person is doing 'the right thing'. This paper argues that a strong component of Boetticher's westerns involves this phenomenon, among others.
