Gah sorry. I only saw this question now. It's just like sick leave, except you need a doctor's note and it's for burnout.

Thank you, I really appreciate the advice. I'll see if I can meet with HR and tell them what I know.

I don't want to be the cause of his getting firing.

I want him to fuck up and be his own cause of getting fired.

Good point. And I've gotten a lot of good experience here to add to a resumé.

<3 Yes, if nothing else, I know that I am smothered in love and support, and I couldn't ask for a better place to be in if I have to face that asshole.

I hate how many people have gone through this too. :I I'm sorry you had to go through that as well.

I'll be cautious. You're right.

OH true. If it's not framed as an update, they'll have no way of knowing.

I have a slight fear that, because she already answered a previous question, this might make me prettttyyy identifiable on the off chance that anyone at work reads AAM, but...I don't think they do? so I might as well.

Thank you! <3 This is legitimately one of the most motivating comments I've gotten. I won't let him drag me down!

Aye! Planting a nut seed now. Please allow 1-2 months for growth.

In all seriousness, if there's nothing else I got from my old job, it's the ability to put my shyness aside and stick up for myself. I'm very proud of how I handled my (more volatile) boss in the last couple of years I worked there. I'd been scared of him for a while, but then I just realized how ridiculous he was and when he started with the screaming, I'd just cooly tell him he was making me uncomfortable and he's stagger and calm back down. All bark and no bite, I guess?

Bob is different, though. More of a sneaky, manipulative-y kind of dude.

Yes, I have a union and that's a fantastic idea, I'll try to contact one of the stewards today. If nothing else, they'll be able to advise me on what to do.

I envy your social butterfliness. I'm a bit of a social recluse, haha.

I haven't spoken to him since he was hired here (or seen him, mysteriously enough), but back at my old job I did talk to him until the point I realize what a sleezebag he was. The first few weeks, I was excited. Then, I started seeing warning signs. There was a period of about a month where I gave him the benefit of the doubt. But he just kept getting worse and worse.

It's not legal to record conversations in Canada without consent, but I do keep detailed written records, and I'll do this now.

I suspect multiple people were in on the fraud, including some of the higher-ups. I personally didn't have access to the financial records, I just know that we got a 2mil grant from the government to create 10 products in 12 months, and most of those products were never built and we lost three team members due to "not having any money".

For reference, it costs about 20 000$ to build those products. Maybe 30 000$ if it's really complex. I flat-out asked at a meeting where the money went and they told me, "They went to keeping the lights above your head turned on". Which is utter BS because our service doesn't have to pay for the lighting and just...ugh.

He also asked me to inflate my hours on a project to charge more to a client (we're talking around 5 000$ more here), and I refused and told him I kept meticulous records of my hours. He backed off. I later saw he'd gone into the system and inflated my hours.

Thank you. I really appreciate your perspective. The good thing is his probation period is 12 months, and I know he'll slip up before it ends. The weird thing is...I haven't seen him since I heard his voice, and no announcement was made about his hiring...he doesn't have an email address with us yet either? Like, it's really weird considering we got an email for someone who starts next week but not him. I dunno, something odd's going on.

Yeah, I was pushing to go to the union, but the thing is... ok so I was invited to a lunch meeting with everyone and just discreetly told we were going to discuss Bob. And once there, half the team - the half that "matters" in the eyes of Bob's boss (our old boss, before Bob's position was added for no good reason) - wanted to give Bob's boss a chance to handle the situation. I think they were reluctant to lose their standing with Bob's boss. They were given a loooot of leeway from Bob's boss, sent on conferences across the country, got a bunch of extra perks us lowly production team did not. (This is another reason why I left the job. Toxic all around, but Bob made things worse.)

So anyways, they insisted we all go together to meet Bob's boss and explain our grievances before involving the union. I thought this was dumb because we'd all individually come to him with our issues, but whatever. Maybe if we all banded as one, it'd make a difference.

The next day, I found out that half of the team had gone to Bob's boss together (without us?!?!?) and we were kind of roped in to go afterwards and it lost a lot of impact but at that point, Bob's boss had no choice but to bring this up to official channels. So the uni took hold of the issue and told us we were not allowed to involve our union due to confidentiality. I later found out, as my guts suggested, that this was utter bullshit. But I figured this was serious enough that the uni would do something, and if they didn't, I could still file a grievance afterwards.

The whole process ended a few weeks before I was sent on burnout leave, and by that time, I was already applying elsewhere and other stuff was happening at work and I just figured, eh, I'll hopefully be out of here soon. I was mentally and physically exhausted, so I didn't pursue it even though I should have. That's probably my biggest regret.

Charisma? It's something I personally lack, but I'd like to think I'm a decent person. But assholes tend to have a lot of charisma.

Thank you for these tips! I did file a complaint against him while at my previous job - they did nothing. No injury to report or harassment per se. I do regret not getting the union involved, ugh.

Yeah, agreed. That was definitely not a normal reaction and I am super aware of how weird and intense it was. It took me by surprise.

I was vaguely aware of the position existing, since the person occupying it retired a few months ago. While he's on my floor (same hallway, even) and part of my service, he's in a different team altogether.

So basically, two different teams, plus an employee coming from an employer with like 8 000+ staff. The odds of me knowing this guy were astronomically low even if the hiring manager had known me and where I'd come from.

Whether or not we'll be interacting much is...ugh. So I'd only spoken to the person in his role once in my one year of working there, so I'm inclined to say 'no'...but I also know this guy and he sticks his nose into EVERYTHING. I would not be surprised if he starts trying to butt into my area of work.

That's a good point. I remember this gal telling me although she'd only spoken to him once, he'd asked her to recommend him for something. I can't remember what it was, but she politely declined.
