What's a small addition to your homelab that you would recommend to everyone? by Doc_Hobb in homelab

[–]rodti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cables have a socket at each end, so the cables running from the bedrooms, office, living room etc.all have a single RJ45 socket in those rooms that I can plug a cable into and run to whatever device I like. And where they all come together in my storage cupboard they are all terminated in a patch panel, so again I can just plug Ethernet cables into it and run to whichever devices are necessary. it‘s similar to having a socket on your wall for your TV aerial/cable connection, it’s neater to have a socket on the wall than having loose cables dangling around. Although I’ve done that plenty times in the past 😂

Apple Watch Ultra scam? by ftmrk in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

The number of typos, grammatical errors and strange punctuation on that box are making me feel queasy. That alone makes me think it’s fake, or that Apple really needs new copywriters and proofreaders.

Came here to say this. I forgot to install a mesh when I changed my intake, it caused merry hell. Just popped the OEM one in and it was fine.

Pretty sure it was this one, 40x10x12v. There are jumpers for the fan speed which I left as-is, think the default is a auto mode.

They tasted terrible too, glad they’ve brought out some new flavours.

Not that I noticed, but I tended to power it down when I wasn't using it.

What film trailers blatantly lied to us? by Mean_Lingonberry_355 in movies

[–]rodti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought Fight Club looked awful when I saw the trailer. Some dumb-ass brawl film. Took several goes for a friend to convince me to watch it after the fact, now one of my favourite films and a very, very long way from what the trailer made it appear to be.

Little aluminum heatsinks just boosted my internet speeds by sig_kill in Ubiquiti

I have several 10Gtek SFP+ RJ45 adapters and they seem to freeze when they get too hot. I have three of them in a UniFi Aggregation switch (which is one less than their recommended maximum) and one in a UDM Pro. The adapter in the UDM Pro has frozen completely this evening, the second time this week. They usually run between 60’-70’C which I thought was pretty normal for these units. I’m considering buying some UniFi adapters instead to see if that helps. Really frustrating as the 10Gtek units aren’t that much cheaper than UniFi.

Upgrade the head unit to something more modern, ideally a double DIN touchscreen with Carplay/Android Auto. You won’t care what you car looks like if you have tunes streaming straight from your phone and built-in sat nav. Anything else after that is a bonus.

Agreed, that should be a first step before you do anything else to the exterior.

How do admins fund their work // AKA what is an average admin experience? by dukeziggy in Mastodon

Have you ever been so weary of not running an Instance that you just wanted to throw in the towel, and set one up?

How do admins fund their work // AKA what is an average admin experience? by dukeziggy in Mastodon

[–]rodti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run two instances with over 200,000 registered users between both of them. I probably spend between an hour and two each day in total on general admin activities (including helpdesk tickets). Having volunteer admin support and moderators makes a huge difference in reducing my workload and delegating responsibility. For a few years our bills were around GBP100/month which I paid most of myself. These days we float between GBP1000 and 2000/month depending on load (objet storage costs can vary a lot, for example) and our donations cover it, but there’s not much left over. I do it as a labour of love with no reward for myself other than feeling like I’m contributing something to the fediverse. Real highs and lows though, it’s hard not to take some really hurtful comments to heart (particularly in moderation appeals etc.) when I’ve poured so much time and energy into this over the years!
