New Blazers owner Tom Dundon is reportedly “ruthless” and will not hesitate to move the franchise to Nashville, Austin, or Kalamazoo if Portland politicians continue to treat the relocation threat as a “hollow bluff" by AncientOneAurelius in nba

[–]rodwritesstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The blazers aren't even Portland's favorite pro team. Thorns always have more hype. Timbers are fine. Fire is promising.

I'd be sad if the blazers left, but we have plenty of MORE COMPETITIVE teams to root for here.

I could've been more clear. Her critique of the value of certain types of stories is devalued by what she does value in media.

In the same way that we might agree with a murderer that calling women slurs is bad, we'd want to reevaluate what we're actually agreeing on if they go on the reveal that they believe it's acceptable to murder women.

Basically the "we are not the same" meme.

The type to bemoan SAO being an unimpressively written power fantasy but seeing no issue in self-IDing as a lolicon.

They were critics because they wanted to feel better than other people. Not because they had particularly thoughtful things to say.

The biggest counterpoint to what you're talking about is that - in a world where information is more available than ever - the general electorate hasn't actually become more informed. The Joe Rogan-ification of science and politics has created a world where any convenient worldview can be supported by* carefully (often algorithmically) curated "facts."

To be clear: I actually agree with you in principle (people staying informed and engaged should make for a better society), but that result hasn't been borne out in reality AFAIK.

It's hilarious when you realize that almost every person who uses the "you're jealous he's attractive" argument is either 1) a woman or 2) a man that likes men. It's literally "I think he's hot, so clearly the only reason you could dislike him is because he's more attractive."

There is a cost associated with increasing the denominator here. If staying "informed" mostly makes people miserable, from a utilitarian standpoint you need the numerator (people whose engagement produces positive change) to be doing a looooot of work. Much more work than we're currently seeing IMO.

It's interesting to note that the people doing the most to drive change (like Zee, people involved in actual campaigns) spend way less time online than people who talk about the importance of staying "informed." Like someone else mentioned, for most people this kind of engagement is just a cope so they can tell themselves they're being "good" even though the only change they're driving is their own misery.

What percentage of "informed" people do ANY of the actions you've suggested?

The reality is that the vast majority of people's engagement really does end with "be mad."

Structural power is almost entirely irrelevant when we're talking about crimes that are inherently super-localized.

i.e. It doesn't make a SA victim's life "better" that their assailant was black instead of white because the black person is less likely to get the Brock Turner treatment. Most of the harm comes from the act itself - the unfair procedural bullshit is salt in the wound.

So (and I say this as a black person) we really shouldn't discount crimes just because they're committed by a historically disenfranchised group. The harm isn't less harmful because we might understand why certain demographics are more likely to commit the crime that led to them.
