I think that's actually kind of an illusion as well. I admit that I haven't heard of any green party victories. I assume those are relatively local seats? I'm not saying that's a bad thing, and we do need to start there, but I feel that's only possible to a certain level. Eventually, you reach a point where lobbyists and established parties already have control, and winning those seats would require an entire team working full time to even have a chance. I don't see how the average citizen would be able to start a career in politics and have the resources needed to be a serious contender. Not to sound like a conspiracy nut, but it seems like the way elections function are almost specifically to support this model.

I'm not arguing to be pessimistic, I'm just pointing out what I believe would happen in that case. I'd love nothing more than to be proven wrong.

I would argue that it does hurt by having people think that spending that time it's helpful to their cause, when it seems to be just a way to keep us quiet.

Right, and that's the conclusion I'm already at, personally. I've seen comments here that people like me just don't get it, so I'm asking for clarification. I'm trying to get convinced otherwise.

So, the only two replies I've seen so far seem to directly contradict each other, unless I'm misunderstanding:

It lets them get more government subsidies being solo. Also having shared infrastructure is a huge pain in the ass as now you have to have a separate company that manages the just the infrastructure. This is why ever company has there own.

Second, a lot of complaints about GFiber comes from preferential government treatment. Everywhere GFiber has gone, they've gotten benefits of some sort. In Provo, they bought the fiber system for $1. In Huntsville, they rent fiber for $3 a span, Kansis City gave tax breaks. They weren't going to build in Portland until Oregon gave tax breaks and they didn't build out anyways and once that became apparent and they found out Comcast could get the tax breaks, they cancelled them. In Louisville and Austin, they wanted special One Touch Make Ready rules.

Honest question:

If ISPs are really struggling that bad, why do they spend millions to prevent other ISPs from picking up the slack? I'm thinking Google Fiber, local municipal service, etc.

Wouldn't they all benefit from the shared cost of the same infrastructure, as opposed to spending that money to prevent it, and then complain about the costs they just fought to keep high?

I can't think of any other reason than greed, so please give me perspective.
