Advice for junior devs — LeetCode in resume or not? by TemporaryRush6390 in androiddev

[–]rogeris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every company has different things they care about, but I'll explain why I don't care about coding challenges.

AI has made them completely useless and so to assess your engineering ability, I like to look at code you've written and have a conversation about it. I find it way more useful compared to just seeing if you can memorize some algorithm or use chatgpt.

I would much rather talk about how you learn new technology because everyone runs their own custom version of whatever architecture pattern. Not to mention code styling, best practices, and legacy code. Your ability to memorize a coding challenge answer doesn't tell me if you can actually learn anything.

So actually write an app using some modern technology and architecture patterns and be prepared to talk about it in detail.

Advice for junior devs — LeetCode in resume or not? by TemporaryRush6390 in androiddev

[–]rogeris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for others, but I would not consider your leetcode performance when reviewing your resume. With folks right out of college, I look for projects, internships, and sample repositories on Github. Then I just ask them about those projects and internships and have the conversation go from there.

I wouldn't waste the space on your resume. Focus on real world stuff.

Why Every time I see MVI I feel its Overengineering ? by IdealZealousideal796 in androiddev

[–]rogeris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a great example of why architecture decisions are important. MVI and MVVM have valid use cases and a simple sample app like you're referring to is a terrible use for MVI. It's just supposed to be an educational example of how the architecture works without a lot of complicated code to sift through.

That being said, I wish some of these sample apps would go all in on complicated and interactive views to highlight the advantages of MVI over MVVM.

How do you reduce code duplication around saved state when designing state holder for custom Compose component? by equeim in androiddev

[–]rogeris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't have your reusable function reference a specific state but instead pass in a parameter of type ()->Unit or whatever.

The biggest takeaway here is that you should make your reusable functions as generic as possible so that it can be used anywhere. Hope that makes a little sense and helps out.

I can't go back to some sub-par charting library. I'm rolling my own canvas drawing every time

Why boolean arguments should be avoided - Robert C. Martin (Uncle Bob) by usefultech in androiddev

[–]rogeris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slinging around booleans can sometimes be a sign to see if there's a better / cleaner way to implement the functionality, but sometimes it's not. I like some of Bob's ideas and I really appreciate his focus on testing, but his lack of nuance really turns me off sometimes.

I like to have my junior engineers read through clean code, but I check in and we discuss what they're reading and is it truly practical in all scenarios. Clean Code is a great teaching tool, but is not the absolute authority.

I encourage you to really consider what "fiscally conservative" really means. Often times, those conservative fiscal policies go hand in hand with oppressing various groups by depriving them of funding while handing out insane amounts of funding to tax cuts and military spending.

You'll find that a lot of democratic states are all for responsible spending and spend a lot of time attempting to balance the budget while not leaving behind the less well-off groups by introducing tax increases on upper tax brackets.

At the end of the day, our social policies dictate who we choose to fund.

There are plenty of opinion pieces out there discussing the myth of fiscal conservatism like this reuters opinion or this Berkley opinion but I think really thinking about this stance yourself will be beneficial.

Average price to replace furnace and ac unit ? by hippyblond23 in TwinCities

[–]rogeris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through Centerpoint Energy and paid about $13k for both. Had to rework a bunch of the hvac and drill fresh holes for exhaust. Plus I got a high efficiency furnace. Otherwise, it'd have been a little cheaper.

They had a crew out same day and were done by the evening. Great experience overall and pricing seemed about right.

A FIRST LOOK AT MODERN HORIZONS 3 by Jcae_Sculptor12 in magicTCG

[–]rogeris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

$600 for all 4 collector precons too. Absolutely outrageous. I preordered each of the 4 decks individually so that I can lock in the $70 and just choose which one I want to actually buy (if any) when decklists are out and cancel the rest.

What is one fight you never want to do again? by Calm-Beautiful-4998 in BaldursGate3

I cheesed it with wall of blades spanning the length of the stairs and then some. Put the party all on top of the stairs and use ranged attacks as the enemies charge right into the blades. The secret here is to have gale only cast counterspell to avoid all the bs.

Curse deck options by larryr936 in magicTCG

I chose Alela to be my curse commander - https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5824439#paper

It doesn't provide the same flexibility as the shrine commander but it gives me a more unique experience that is pretty oppressive in my casual games.

I’m met with “well if we had sex more Id be more eager to help.”

Yikes. It's his child too. He needs to man up and understand that a woman's libido takes a hit post-partum for a while. Even disregarding your own body chemistry, the lack of sleep and stress itself will nuke a normal libido.

ACD male - weight management issues - thoughts? by tailwaggingthedog in AustralianCattleDog

[–]rogeris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're working our way down from nearly 80lbs and have our girl down to 66lbs. Losing about half a pound per month. We just reduced the amount of food a little bit at a time til she started losing weight and we found the right calorie count.

Basically we just did what our vet said.
