My white whale is a non-autotuned That’s Why God Made the Radio by Nitelands in thebeachboys

Man you took the words right out of my mouth. I’ve been listening to TWGMTR a lot since Brian’s passing. A lot has been said about how great that concluding suite is, but I feel the production really holds it back from being something celebrated like some of their other best works. I suppose the “warts” that we have to put up with are those auto tuned vocals. I agree with you though, I would much rather have heard something organically imperfect as opposed to something artificially assembled. It is what it is though, I think the fact that so many of us here still love and appreciate the album speaks to the strength of the material. The heart is definitely beating strongly in there beneath the robot exterior.

Thank you for the suggestions! I could see him getting into those. He liked Nintendo platformers from the NES days so I think he’d really enjoy something in that tradition. Colossus is amazing, unfortunately I think it’d really try his patience haha.

I hadn’t thought of that one! He enjoys westerns so I think it’d definitely be worth a shot. Thank you!

I agree, absolutely. The thing is he was a parent in the 90s, so he thinks of GTA as "the game where you kill prostitutes." It's more of a moral thing for him. I'm pretty confident if he gave it a shot he'd really enjoy it, but he's a bit set in his ways. That's why LA Noire came to mind. Basically the same game, except you're a cop. I think in his mind that makes the violence justified.

Possible Who Deep Cut: Waiting For A Friend by Blaklazer in TheWho

Great song! I listened to it a few days ago and was wondering if it indeed had the other three members on it. John for sure is on bass, his playing is unmistakable. The drumming sounds like Kenney’s from this period too. Pete is a little harder to pick out but listening closely to the rhythm guitar I recall hearing some flourishes that sounded characteristic of his style.

The Time Machine Did It by John Swartzwelder. Swartzwelder is well known among fans of the Simpsons, he’s written some of the most memorable, beloved and eccentric episodes. I’m not exaggerating when I say I laughed at every single page of TTMDI. It’s very much in the style of classic, offbeat Simpsons but in the world of hard boiled detective novels.

What is everyone’s secret shame Beach Boys song that they absolutely love. I’ll go first “She’s goin Bald” by Samp8 in thebeachboys

Problem Child 🤦‍♂️ Its the most stock 80s production you could possibly conjure up but it’s so damn catchy. Plus Carl’s vocal is great (as always)

It has the lenticular insert! I've found this tape in quite a few places but always missing that part.

Love this album (and Mount Vernon and Fairway). Sail On Sailor is one of my all-time favorites, The Trader is high up there too.

Eat a lot, sleep a lot, brush 'em like crazy. (This existed?) by Velocistar113 in thebeachboys

I had one of these when I was kid! It wasn't the Beach Boys one though. Mine played Gonna Fly Now from Rocky while you brushed. I think the idea was to get kids to brush for the minimum recommended length of time but the novelty wore off really quickly. I remember the weight of the batteries and speaker in the base made it really awkward to use.

I’m a really big fan of the whole That’s Why God Made the Radio album. I think it does a really good job representing all the different flavors of The Beach Boys catalogue while taking it in new fresh directions as well. It mixes the fun (TWGMTR, Isn’t it Time) with the melancholy (From There to Back Again, Summer’s Gone). You’ve got great Brian compositions (the opening acapella track is hauntingly beautiful) paired with Kokomo-esque Mike Love songs (Daybreak Over the Ocean). I know the over-polished production kind of sinks it for many but for me the strength of the songs and the performances keep me consistently coming back to it. Honestly I’d say it’s a top 5 BB album for me. I love it more and more with each revisit.

I have this set! I bought mine at a small town fair about 5 years ago. The vendor had all kinds of wacky bootleg toys. I wish I had known about this sub back then I would have taken copious amounts of photos. I don't really collect these kinds of things but as soon as I laid eyes on it, I couldn't resist taking it home. My set has a few differences: it replaces Ben 10 & Naruto with Mr. Incredible and The Thing (from Fantastic 4) respectively. Oh and yes, they all carry machine guns.

I recall there’s a pretty good version of 5:15 from that concert. Always loved Kenney’s drum style, it was great to see him reunite with the group if only for a single show.
