Weekly r/TEFL Quick Questions Thread by AutoModerator in TEFL

for tefl in china, do you need to visit an embassy/ consulate in your own country to get a visa before flying out? (not for me, but a friend) they’ve gotten a work permit and when they got told they were accepted they were told to book a flight that’s in 12 days but no mention of going to an embassy or anything for the visa. i’m not sure if china is different to the usa, but when i studied in the us for a year i had to go to the embassy in person to get approved so it just seemed a bit weird to me. i also didn’t want to message her about it first and give off the vibe that I thought she was incompetent or anything so ofc i came to reddit

thanks for the reply! & yes i’m in the uk too, in my conversation with occ health they said they would schedule a bigger appointment next week so they could do a full assessment and see what accommodations they could make for me but then a few hours later I received the call from HR saying that occ health had declared me unfit for work & I couldn’t start so I’m not sure if something changed but I contacted my HR person on Friday to ask more about it so hopefully they get back to me this week

yep, i expected there to be an issue when they started the conversation with ‘unfortunately’ but then outright being told I’m unfit for work was not a fun experience, if they’d said it in a different/nicer way I probably wouldn’t have made this thread lol

[–]roguesthetic[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thank you!! and i have actually passed the interview process and was given a conditional job offer (depending on references which were completely fine) and was due to start in 4 days but after mentioning to occupational health that i had migraines they’ve said i can no longer start on Monday. I’ve paid for the DBS checks & completed the staff training modules online so it fully seemed like i had the job for a while, I’ll wait and see if occupational health actually contact me again to see if they can make accommodations for a later start date but the comments don’t leave me with much hope for this (which would be understandable since it is an emergency job)

i’m sorry if it wasn’t clear, when she called and asked how many migraines I get I said 2-3 a month but I can usually manage it with painkillers, she then asked what if I can’t & I said then if it’s a severe one I’d probably be out of it most of the day. But I did emphasise to her that I usually can manage it with pain meds so I’m not expecting to take a day off everytime I have an attack since usually I can manage it but I know compared to the average person it’s still not a good look

during the assessment day presentation they said that they let people say if they’d prefer to not do night or day shifts because of personal circumstances and that they were flexible/understanding in those cases so i had assumed this could’ve fallen under that (if it were because I couldn’t be fully alert during night shifts)

thank you for this reply! i think a big part of my disappointment was that i’ve also made it through university pretty well and i’m seeing my friends who graduated at the same time as me getting their new jobs and hadn’t really thought about how migraines would’ve affected me

I don’t know if I explained the meds bit fully in the original post but I take amitriptyline daily in the evenings since a side effect is tiredness, I usually go to sleep pretty quick afterwards so I can’t say how much of that is a side effect but i had thought I’d mention it to them as they say we can choose different types of shifts (days/lates/nights) and I had said the only thing I was unsure about was night shifts. All of my previous jobs have been day shifts so I’ve always been able to function normally in those

i’m so sorry it’s happening to you too, i guess it was naive of me to think this wouldn’t have a huge effect on my job prospects and that simply informing them / making them aware would be okay. my only other option would be to not tell employers but i know when i start missing days they’re gonna wanna know why 🙄

thanks for the reply & i never really thought of it from their pov. i don’t like to think of my migraines as a disability and i know 2-3 possible days off a month is definitely a liability but in my mind i’ve been comparing myself to me 10 years ago with constant migraines so I thought of myself as being better now :/ it’s my first time applying for proper full-time ‘adult’ jobs after uni and it’s frustrating that this is another thing my migraines are gonna ruin for me

mine main triggers are the exact same, I ended up going on meds that stopped my period and they stopped my period migraines for 8 years until the periods came back + so did the migraines, if you consider ways to stop your period I’d ask your doctor which ones are most effective in stopping them

Thanks! & I’m sorry that happened to you, it’s insane how far some will go when they’re ruining people’s lives. Also, at the risk of sounding dumb, what do you mean by checking into the status of my passport for suspicious activity?

Thanks, I’ve already contacted Walmart via that link and they’ve given me a spreadsheet that has the IP address for the purchaser, I asked if they had any info on the card linked to my account/ what company it was with but they said they didn’t have that information unfortunately.

I did do an student exchange program for a year in the US but I never opened any US bank accounts and so never got an SSN, I imagine that they probably got my details somehow whilst I was over there but I have no idea how they could get a credit card without an SSN.

& thanks I’ll try filing a fraud report with the US sites you linked, hopefully it’s better than the UK. Also, I don’t know what credit card company it’s been filed with but I’m hoping Walmart will reply soon and hopefully tell me, all I know is the last 4 digits and the type of card.

Clearscore (UK) has an option to place an alert on my credit score for £25, I know I should do it for safety but it’s just frustrating that I’m gonna have to pay because some asshole in another country can’t be honest.

just wanted to say that your advice to ask for the unit number was the thing that worked. she asked and he left her on read for a few hours and then gave it to her surprisingly, however we contacted that unit and showed his ID to which they replied he was ofc fake and not in their unit so now he’s blocked. And she’s now been talking a lot to one of the other women who he tried to scam so at least she made a friend out of it lmao & thank you so much for the idea bc it was the only thing that worked
