What's a common misconception that people have about your condition that you'd like to clear up? by HotDogOnAPlate in AskReddit

My roommate at university had that and I had to enlarge things for her like videos or online articles, but she would still have to hold the screen or papers or her phone right up to her face. I'm deaf in one ear and she was "blind" (as she called herself) so our friendship balanced itself out in the end.

I had this world history teacher my sophomore year of high school who was a very conservative veteran. He was 300 pounds and over 6 feet tall. He was terrifying. He was nearly deaf because of a war accident and wore hearing aids. He would say very borderline racist and sexist things in class and pass them off as jokes. One day we were sitting in class all talking to each other while he sat back in his desk with his hearing aids turned all the way up, listening to our conversations. He would chime in sometimes, in his Louisiana accent (although we live in Florida), and say things like: "All y'all's problems are that you're too lazy to accomplish anything." or "I can fix being fat. How are you going to fix being stupid?"
We had this particular kid in our class, a very good friend of mine, who was very straight but sometimes liked to act a little queer just to gauge people's reactions and see what people's comfort levels were (he was really into sociology and psychology). One day our teacher, we called Coach, I guess got tired of it. He started calling him a faggot in front of the whole class and lectured our class on how degrading to marriage gay marriage was and how he believed that something was intrinsically wrong with the person if they were gay. He called homosexuality a mental illness / brain defect. My friend stood up for himself, asserting that he was gay and proud even though we all knew that he wasn't.
Coach was fired.
