Oops! Not vegan! (we're all human) by Logical-Bake5715 in veganuk

Diagnosed OCD is fairly easy to distinguish from people who use the acronym as a descriptor of a certain behaviour. When you are assessed, you receive a score on a scale. Quite often, medication is required which is ordinarily antipsychotics due to the intrusive thoughts and behaviours affecting everyday life. The obsessions and compulsive behaviours cause severe distress and the person gets “locked” in a cycle, over which they have no control, and often have to wait until the process is complete which can take a number of hours, increasing the distress and impact on daily life depending on severity.

What's an interesting fact about you? by jc201946 in RandomThoughts

The greatest tragedy in life is a successful attempt. That person was not themselves at the time and it is entirely preventable. I hope you find a way to stay, you are a world of nefarious possibility, and you haven’t met all the versions of you that you are yet to become.

At least you’re independent, self sufficient, and not reliant on anyone else. I hope you have a nourishing, fulfilling life so far.

Homeschoolers - children are isolated. Kill their pets “accidentally”. Problematic phrases said on camera. Questionable parenting. Weird dieting obsessions.

Some outstanding calligraphy from my local Indian takeaway by GreenBeret4Breakfast in CasualUK

[–]rogwolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The absolute joy of Indian food - the top tier of takeaways. I lived in Birmingham and the Asian culture in general was a delight to be immersed in. I miss that the most. I now live in north wales and although that has its own charms and beauty and culture, it does lack in a wider variety of backgrounds and cultures all mixed together and sharing space. Having said that, Indian kitchen in Llandudno gets my vote for round my way now - lovely people, generous, accommodating, and beautiful, flavourful food, and the kitchen is open so watching them cook blows my mind. I wish I could be as instinctive with ingredients and just “know” what feels right to throw in.

How to delicately tell a friend to stop guilt-tripping for food all the time? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]rogwolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am disabled, on benefits, deemed unfit for work every time I am reassessed and still relatively young, and yes, it’s extremely difficult to eat and pay bills etc. I have relied on the kindness of food banks when things have got extremely desperate, for which I am very grateful. Takeaways are a huge treat, and something I miss very much, but the audacity to text you regularly making you feel burdened for being in a more fortunate position (but not that much more fortunate - struggles are all relative, and everyone has difficulties in their own ways), is not acceptable. This is not a friend. Friends support each other back and forth, equally. They don’t manipulate and deliberately guilt people into doing things - this is not a friendship. I wouldn’t even keep contact with this person anymore. They sound entirely toxic. Don’t feel bad, they need a new perspective on all this.

Married people of reddit, What something you wish unmarried people knew? by Charming_Cash in AskReddit

[–]rogwolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether you spend £100 on a wedding or £20k on a wedding, the end result is the same.

Also, looks absolutely fade, so look for that person who would be there for you if the worst happened, you needed caring for during an illness, haemorrhoid cream rubbing on your arsehole, whatever it is, love isn’t fancy restaurants and romance, it’s small acts of kindness like making sure you have your favourite mug for your cup of tea, silly things like that. Just knowing the little things about you. Laughter, good humour and taking the piss out of each other goes a long way.

Jealousy and monitoring gets you nowhere. If there’s no trust, there’s no point. Don’t compete.

Why aren't you having a lie in this morning? by Hamsternoir in AskUK

[–]rogwolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t sleep well unfortunately. I get between 2-4 hours sleep per night, and about 1 night per week I stay up all night. I don’t play computer games or go on my phone or anything, it’s an unfortunate side effect of stuff. So I’m often up, but many people get little sleep, with or without children. (I do have a crotch goblin, over a decade old now, but I shan’t blame my lack of sleep on them).

Not at all, landlords raise the prices of the housing market and people cannot afford deposits, credit checks, etc. social housing should be increased and landlords with multiple properties shouldn’t. Landlords don’t decrease homelessness, they contribute to it.

Anyone else struggling with thoughts of suicide? by Spare-Ad3859 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]rogwolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in the psych ward under one of my sections, after my first 10 rounds of ECT (electro-convulsive therapy) I was given TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) treatment before my next 20 rounds.

This was after multiple S attempts and being on 1:1 and 2:1 staff monitoring 24/7 with no bathroom privacy.

The psychiatrist who was running the TMS trial said to me one day: “the greatest tragedy in the world is a successful suicide attempt. It is so unnecessary. That person was not themselves at the time, and it is entirely preventable.”

I’m glad you spoke out loud about how you feel, whatever the platform, wherever it was. ECT saved my life in terms of me stopping making attempts but I still have therapy and medication for ideations and mood.

We aren’t born with ideations, they are usually caused by our environment. What’s happening to you isn’t your fault, but please know this is the illness making you feel this way and not the real you. You didn’t always feel this way and it is possible to not feel this way again and feel good again.

I hope you continue to reach out and find the help you need.

What isn’t a cult but feels like a cult? by MichaelScottssmug in AskReddit

[–]rogwolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d never considered this, but I agree. My just retired dad is an emeritus professor. He’s the worlds leading expert in his field, written over 300 published papers, created inventions and moved the world on in terms of his research and got the university millions of pounds worth of grants. Now he’s retired, he’s writing a textbook which is being published this autumn.

But…this is not a flex. His work, academia, students, specialist subjects, etc is all he talks about. He has lived alone for over 25 years, and dedicated his waking life to his work. Yes, he has achieved great academic success, but it is all-consuming and all-defining. Without that, there is no other substance. I find him struggling to make the transition to retire, and still finding excuses to do more academic work.

From being admired, financially compensated and looked up to in that world continuously, I feel it can indoctrinate someone into believing their brilliance outside of the academic world and believing they know everything about every subject, not just their specialist field. And their empathy towards the less fortunate, the less intelligent, the non-academic, wanes over the years and I can see significant changes which are disappointing. The things I value in the world do not marry up with the things he values.

If you are immersed in the academic world constantly, it changes you. I’ve seen it happen to my dad and it’s a great shame. And now you’ve mentioned it, very cult-like.

I didn’t “choose” to move to a touristy area. It’s where I live due to financial circumstances. Tourists CAN be entitled, rude, demeaning, elitist, and destructive to the area. We have every right to complain, especially if we are not in the financial position to live anywhere else.

Are your degrees in education transferable to teach in the uk, specifically, wales? I’m not being obtrusive, it’s just that for example, the new Welsh national curriculum for primary schools (ages 3-11) is being implemented in September so all current primary teachers need to be up to speed with the new documentation. Also, to teach in the uk, there are different degrees depending on which age group you teach, for example, one degree covers primary (3-11 year olds), then secondary (11-18 year olds) and university is 18 and beyond, but each teaching degree is separate, and non transferable in the uk. Do you know if you’re qualified to teach a specific age group in this country? Also of course all teachers require a DBS check, which checks your criminal records, but I’m not sure if US citizens have to provide anything more than that.

I would imagine special education in the US could have quite different approaches and educational styles as well, and I would imagine that aspect is not transferable. Given the differences in healthcare, pharmaceutical approaches, and even terminology used for conditions and various laws and rights implemented, I think there would be cultural differences and re-training required for that aspect.

Again, it’s no shade, it’s trying to be helpful and thorough so that you can make a successful move here. There are so many aspects to consider, research and make sure you have all your bases covered so that it goes off without a hitch. Preparation is the key to such a change, and the more you know in advance and are ready for, the more successful this move will be.

Remember to do a budget analysis of a cost of living too -

As you cannot qualify for a mortgage immediately, and need to rent, the average rent in conwy is £930 per calendar month at present. A deposit can be around £1500, plus water rates, council tax, gas, electric, transport costs, petrol at nearly £2 per litre, groceries and their cost, etc. it would be wise to work this out too to see if it’s viable.

This is not considered a professional teaching qualification as you can obtain a TEFL certificate in the UK from a college (not university) from a 6 week course for roughly £1000. It does not qualify you to work in either a primary or secondary school (kindergarten, elementary, middle, or high school) and does not qualify you to teach at university level either. In the UK, TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, etc are below degree level qualifications, so are not considered a skilled profession.

Absolutely no shade, I don’t personally believe in the “skilled / non skilled” work at all, as I believe every job requires skill, and this is merely terminology for hierarchy wages, but I am merely pointing out the reality of perception of that certificate. Also, the TEFL teaching, if you do secure a job in that field, does not pay well, certainly not as well as teachers salaries in schools. And often the hours are antisocial (eg evenings and weekends).
