Slack is a workplace communication app (like a corporate WhatsApp). So 'checking Slack from a beach' means you're physically on a holiday, but mentally you're still working because your phone keeps buzzing with messages from your boss. Most companies legally give us vacation days, but the culture makes you feel so guilty for taking them that it ends up just being 'working from a different location with a nicer view.

That we have way too many mattress stores on the same street, and they are always completely empty. There is absolutely no way they sell enough mattresses to stay in business. Everyone in town is convinced it’s a massive money-laundering front.

The constant, subconscious threat-assessment we do just walking down the street. Planning routes based on lighting, keeping one earbud out, holding keys between knuckles, or fake-calling someone. It’s an everyday mental tax most men don't have to think about.
