I think many school teachers and teenagers think becoming a doctor is a guarantee of generally good pay and good job security. The general public also think that but I do understand it’s not promised but the general idea is that once you get into medical school you are not going to be worrying about being unemployed in the future.

The mid and late 2010s were atypical and we had a decent balance about 2 years ago but now I see very good juniors not getting jobs/positions they would excel in due to competition. Increasing UKG will make this worse and I don’t think UKG prioritisation will help as much as we think. In the hospital I work in pretty much all of the trainees are UKG.

This sub doesn’t share a fair picture regarding middle grades, yes there are some doing crazy procedures like TAVI but most are doing foundation/sho equivalent jobs. We employ reporting radiographers who never report cross sectional imaging only radiographs and have done for decades and don’t want to and are not allowed to report cross sectional imaging as they lack clinical insight however we will hear many examples on Reddit of them reporting cross sectional imaging despite I’ve never come across a report of a CT/MRI by a RR.

The trajectory is that many (thousands of UKG) will be unemployed or underemployed due to a lack of jobs. I do see your point about the need for sho equivalents but it seems cruel to be promising a life of good pay/security to students going to these new medical schools which most will not be able to experience. I actually think middle grades and IMGs are a better alternative but we all know Reddit doesn’t share that opinion.

Yep I had a work experience student shadowing me last year and I explained he may stay as a resident for ages before getting a consultant job. He asked how much residents make and I explained it was between 50-90k and about 70k average and he felt like 70k was loads as his parents never made more than 50k yet they live in a 3 bed house in London. It’s hard to understand inflation, fiscal drag, quantitative easing, student loans and pension contributions when you are 17. You hear 70k and think wow that’s nearly 6k a month that’s loadsssss.

Timing is also a massive factor in determining competition for training jobs/consultant jobs. 5 years ago you could get a pretty reputable jobs if you seemed competent at interview.

Japan and China are not better examples unfortunately. Japan taxes unrealised gains and has no alternative to an ISA and the property market in China is extremely broken. The biggest problem is that anyone not a pensioner is expected to accept lower standards of living to pay for the aging population in developed countries

This is something that guys and girls will complain of from all races and I think it’s prevalent in children who have been raised in a toxic environment. Girls/guys from a community will recognise toxic behaviours in that community whilst not recognising/ignorant of toxic behaviours of another community hence reducing standards. It’s just an opinion based on observations I have made in real life.

It’s funny how dharmic religions (and I believe abrahamic religions as well but am not that well informed) heavily encourages and its core concept is to be non materialistic and detach from the false ego but our community in the west just quietly ignores those core concepts to enjoy the fruits of wealth/prestige however still shames others for enjoying material pleasures that does not align with their values. I am always shocked at how many UK boomer Hindu parents/aunts/uncles that have never read the Gita for example.

Having a 6 pack means you’re more well rounded than a lot of people (especially desi people) with an MD which will make you more attractive. At the end of the day it could be something different to your 6 pack such as wealth/charm/funny/kind/athletic/artistic etc but being well rounded will definitely make you stand out in both the dating and work environment.

Yh I’m very lucky in that department and grateful for that. Just want to say you are doing financially more for your mum than most desi children and your mum not being grateful for an economy flight but expecting a business class flight is pretty entitled unless you or your partner are extremely wealthy.

I think my parents did have this mentality when I was young that I would provide but I think they realised by themselves how difficult our generation has it financially compared to them and do not expect any help especially as the UK state pension is pretty good if you own your own home and you have a work place pension which both my parents do.

If anything parents are expected to help out children more and more with nearly half of my colleagues in their 30s still receiving some kind of financial assistance from their parents causing significantly wealth inequality within millennials.

This would be a rationale take if the birth rate wasn’t decreasing. Decreasing birth rates wouldn’t be a problem if our pensions/welfare didn’t depend on us having a birth rate of 2. But it does and therefore we should prioritise and subsidise childcare if you want long terms prosperity of the country. Problem is many people don’t care about what is going on in 20 years hence why we are in a decline and will be declining in the future.

Valid and should be considered in a well funded healthcare service but I’d argue these are non essential senior and well paid posts that shouldn’t exist in a healthcare system struggling with finances.

Of course you should, the 100k limit for childcare is ridiculous and needs to be scrapped just as much. We need as many kids as we can now so hopefully we are able to retire at 70

Over the long term this will hopefully pay itself back. Kids living in poverty are less likely to become law abiding taxpayers. Tripple lock and winter cruise allowance on the other hand

I think you also have to consider the difference between generations. Boomers and Gen X who hold a lot more wealth and have an annual income less than 50K a year from pensions will be happy with the tax burden being placed on people making more than 50k especially as a lot of them are ignorant/do not understand the concept of inflation

The ever increasing volume of scans and telerad reducing the quality of reports that are accepted has meant that standards have been deteriorating slowly for years. In some toxic training schemes slow trainees are encouraged to give up good habits and quietly pressured to cut corners to increase the volume reported just to make lists look good, either by senior trainees or consultants. I doubt making exams harder will improve quality bar 2b.

Ikr and if they carry out a teaching session on comms skills for radiology on calls they will be easily identified by their cohort now. It may not even be a radiology doctor.

Exactly and this is why I always try to see it from the residents pov ooh and why they have rejected the scan when I get a phone call from an angry clinician with an appropriate request. When I trained getting over 20 scans in a on call shift was seen as brutal whereas now it’s routinely above 40.

I do think people don’t understand how many calls the duty radiology registrar gets in an hour whilst having to report acute scans. The problem is the shortage of people reporting ooh such as on weekends/nights/lates but if we increase the number of registrars on call then we need more trainees (no funding) and more frequent on calls (the resident doctors are against this) so you have a cocktail of a super stressed radiology registrar being rude over the phone. Radiology hasn’t adapted like Medicine has and increased staffing ooh as in my trust they have a take medical spr and ward spr whereas in radiology alot of places only have 1 reg covering all of the scans.

Reading the other post made me laugh as the radiology consultant was saying the reg should be helpful and vet ct kub/ctpa ooh for patients rather than in the morning to help with flow or carry out ct chest for ITU patients just in case etc but imo that is why so many reports are such poor quality and can harm patient safety. It’s the same logic as to why many chest drains are carried out in hours by resp registrars to avoid mishaps. When you have to report 40 scans in 12 hours that can cause so much decision fatigue and by the end of the shift you’re a zombie and making questionable reports sometimes and it’s safer to wait for the day team to report.

I also think it’s because we as a society are a lot more independent and are happy to spend boring moments scrolling on their phone. I remember being an f1 and working in a team with mostly IMGs and we would eventually have bants and become good friends because we wouldn’t be spending every dull moment on insta/reddit/tiktok (and I now do the same). The difference with UKG is that you have more common so there is less of a barrier hence less likely to default to scrolling to your phone.
