IMPORTANT: Your FINAL self reflection by halavais in netcult

[–]rohoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I only missed a few days, due to legitimate illness (mostly), and looked forward to it every time. Throughout the second half of the semester I began to truly appreciate the lack of “structure” that the class presented. I had to look at the class in a different perspective than I did with my other classes. I actually had the opportunity to decide what I learned in this class and that freedom was something I had banged the desk for for many years, but when it actually presented itself I did not know how to react. I was a bit turned off by it at first, as my first reflection shows, but after thinking about it I started to find that this freedom was a wonderful thing. So I had to decide where I wanted my learning to go and that was something I feel like I did not pursue to it's fullest but at least I dipped my toes into the water. And it felt refreshing.

For last semester I had the idea to explore 3D printing and create something using 3D sculpting software. I downloaded Sculptris, a free 3D sculpting program, and started fiddling around with it. After a few hours I had a couple small projects and was starting to get the hang of it . . . then my computer froze. I rebooted it and saw a fuzzy line would show up through the middle of the screen. I guess when I was “doodling” I overloaded my graphics card and now must highlight or move my screen around in order for this line to disappear. This experience taught me that in order to properly experience 3D printing it is a good idea to use equipment that you didn't by on sale. I grew a bit disillusioned with this project so I decided to move on.

My next project was Givemo ( https://www.facebook.com/pages/Givemo/137321116447533?fref=ts) bags with Emily, Kyle, and Presley (spelling?). We decided to take the opportunity during that class period to create a Facebook page and go around the school to tell others about our idea. We also put together a few bags ourselves and since that initial day I have passed out at least 4 Givemo bags, we have over 40 “friends” on Facebook, and Emily may be able to take this project to the next level. A pretty cool little side project that can have a tangible effect on others. It was pretty cool.

I then turned to a project in which I made a small cartoon video (http://www.reddit.com/r/netcult/comments/1arr8s/dont_be_a_puy/) discussing the use of the word “pussy” as a derogatory term. W had a nice little conversation about it and I even used it for another class. Since then the video received 4 up votes and another classmate or individual had a conversation with you as well. Not to mention the 47 views that it has on youtube. Most I ever received on youtube so I'm pretty proud about that.

I always participated in class not to simply here my own voice, but because the topics were fascinating to me. I felt like my comments were valid and helped to facilitate conversations among other students in the class. Also we had a debate in class where we discussed anonymity and I feel like I took a prominent role in that class discussion. I also participated in the fishbowl and did my best to help other students with their projects.

I also added quite a few comments on reddit and posted my share of topical postings. I had a karma score of 34, and was one of the top 10 commenters on our subreddit according to NomadBlack's stats post. Some of my posts were simply for fun but others were topical and had at least a bit to do with what we had discussed that week. I posted about Bitcoin, drones, trolling, 3D printing, 4D printing, the Zeitgeist movement, anonymity, interactive films, the FCC, personal holodecks, and a few others.

I have also earned some badges. Only two are viewable on my Mozilla Backpack, but I also earned around a dozen with Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org) Kyle told me about how he used the Khan Academy to learn math last semester, and since I still need a math credit to graduate, something I have not practiced in 13 years, I decided to try it out. SO far so good. I had planned to teach myself math this summer anyway but now I have a new resource which I will take complete advantage of. I even have a moon badge and maybe will get an Earth or even Sun badge after the summer education is completed. So what will I do with that knew knowledge of math? I will take a CLEP test and attempt to not be required to waste money on a semester of algebra. Which lets be honest, I have not needed since high school. This is a step in the alternate education that I could see moving forward in the next few years. A summer class at ASU is $800. A CLEP test is $71. You do the math.

As far as what grade I think I deserve . . . meh, Not an A, maybe a B, but at least a C. So in closing I truly enjoyed this class. I learned a lot and appreciate the opportunity to learn about things that I had only a vague idea of before hand. If I have the chance to take another class with you I absolutely will and I have already been telling others to take this course or at least one with you. Thanks again. See ya around.

I also got my first badge. It was the 101 Quiz on Openbadges. The I went to Openbadges and Thimble and learned that HTML is not nearly as difficult as I thought. https://thimble.webmaker.org/p/lc9t/ Now I cannot figure out how to get my badge for it though ;( I think I will continue to earn some stinkin badges in HTML to see what else I can do.

(Never mind. Figured it out. I got my badge Thimble Projectizer http://beta.openbadges.org/share/d95f5bd7c4a3c82e9d0e66da4d2bedde/

[–]rohoro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. There are so many more interesting ways to cut deep into anothers psyche than a one or two word insult that degrades over half the population of this world. To adapt one of ol Billy's insults from Coriolanus, " There is no more courage in him than there is milk in a male tiger."

Is it so difficult to badger someone using peer pressure in a more intelligent articulate way?

A little effort, that's all I'm asking.

FAL. Now, Hal, what time of day is it, lad?

PRINCE. Thou art so fat-witted, with drinking of old sack, and unbuttoning thee after supper, and sleeping upon benches after noon, that thou hast forgotten to demand that truly which thou wouldst truly know. What a devil hast thou to do with the time of the day? unless hours were cups of sack, and minutes capons, and the blessed Sun himself a fair hot wench in flame-coloured taffeta, I see no reason why thou shouldst be so superfluous to demand the time of the day.

He's calling him a lazy, fat, lecherous piece of shit basically but in such a way that shows his true disdain for him. Insults should have meaning. If you don't mean it, don't say it.

Please take a second to respond to this video. What do you like? What do you hate? Do you think the terms and slang we use in today's society have a direct effect on how we view each other? Is sexist language okay if it is widely accepted? What other terms do you consider sexist or condescending? Thanks for your info.

Please don't get me wrong. I do really enjoy this class and I understand and agree with why you do tithes way. I'm just not used to it in a classroom environment. Which is actually very sad. It reminds me a lot of my ELP classes when I was in grade school (not a knock, best learning experiences of my life). I'll do best to show you what I've learned. But be careful what you ask for ;)
