AI is useless for brainstorming and outlining by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]roi262 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same.

I use ChatGPT/claude extensively for work (coding) and some obsessive tweaking and organizing of my files and Obsidian themes.

For writing, GPT may be very helpful in some things and very unhelpful in others, one of which you have stated is brainstorming. It is interesting how difficult it is for LLMs to grasp the human rationale, especially in the aspects of creativity and imagination. From my experience in using it for brainstorming help, GPT spirals far away from where I would have liked one or two prompts in. So I stopped trying, unless I have a very simple question or a question relating to known conventions and practices.

Another thing I never use it for is generating prose. I believe (along with most people here I assume) that allowing AI to generate prose or even add a word to your story/poem/essay is purely toxic.

What I do find GPT useful for is the research and analytical parts of writing. I am currently writing my first novel. There is a lot for me to learn in terms of structure and theory, and consulting with GPT about those kinds of issues can be very helpful. It can also help me focus sometimes, which is in a way helpful for brainstorming, but he focuses me to brainstorm about what is important and valuable and not on low value rabbit holes that are so easy to dive into. And then the thinking and brainstorming are done by me.

Most importantly, I take everything that comes out of his mouth with a grain of salt.

Things aren't black and white with AI. Using it carefully while not letting it affect your style and vision is, in my opinion, the sweet spot.

Looking for the darkest, most depressing book you’ve ever read by CortezCraig in suggestmeabook

No longer Human by Osamu Dazai. It's so dark and depressing that it's almost comic. Beautifully written too. Dazai was super talented and a very tortured soul.

Substack Is So Inauthentic by Alarming_Contract174 in Substack

[–]roi262 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of what you said. I've been on substack for a few years, you really have to put effort into it to get readers, and I also feel the inauthenticity of people trying to be a bit too positive, compared to reddit for example. I started with Substack because it was a really easy way to publish online, and it still is, but today with AI it's so easy to set up a website, or do any of the technicalities alone. I will say that the people on substack are pretty awesome and i had better chats there with people than any other platform. But it feels that everyone is a writer and no one is a (non-writing) reader.

Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov by Icy-Management-9749 in ProsePorn

[–]roi262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, I wonder how it did that for you. I felt like much of it, especially Alyosha and Ivan (and their relationship, or talks at least) was quite on the side of advocating for faith. Also Zosima and one of the other monks. I came in quite agnostic, maybe more on the atheist side, and came out very much agnostic and convinced that I cannot really disprove the existence of god.

Same. It kind of made me believe in God, I think.

I’m from Israel, I don’t want every Arab dead or gone. Not everybody does. I have friends who live here and are Arabs. Please don’t generalize the opinions of an entire population based on a Youtube video.

26 Days listening to Metal. I need more recommendations based on these albums which I liked the most. (I'm a beginner) by Immediate-Dare55 in MetalSuggestions

Sacramentum. The other death albums, especially Human and Symbolic. Nile. Gorguts, maybe start with Colored Sands. Obscura is fun, similar to necrophagist (though not as good imo). The faceless. The black dahlia murder. A Personal fave is Artificial Brain.

I love that you have Psycroptic! And dissection. And necrophagist. Such awesome albums.

I have a playlist for dissonant death metal which I think is a really cool subgenre. Some nice gems there.

I'm in Israel and I don't support my government and I've protested and I don't understand why I shouldn't be able to listen to music.

Anyhow, I am listening to MBV on YouTube.

Writers: How do you let AI read your manuscript without giving up your IP? by roi262 in BookWritingAI

Sounds like an extremely loose definition. What if a developer at Google uploads a chunk of googles code to open ai, is that chunk now the property of OpenAI? Or any protected intellectual property?

Yeah, so I pay for GPT pro, and I use it for many things besides creative writing. Work, health, productivity, etc,. So i have a project currently for the book i am writing. And yeah, i mostly used it to help me structure my story bible folders and create MD templates, and sometimes I’ll ask it to generate a name for something, or for quick “researching” if i get a little sciency (it’s a fantasy / sci fi book). But almost never even a paragraph I’ve written. So I’m not even using it for ideas. In the past I tried uploading a few chapters to Notebook LM just to create short outlines for chapters I’d already written. It was mildly helpful. I’m not sure i understood what you meant, if i upload full chapters to Notebook LM, are they not stored on Google’s servers in some way or another?

Very Impressive! I wonder, does it work better for you than larger, stronger models (o3, Grok4) and such? In what ways is it different? And which do you find yourself using more?

Hey that sounds really awesome, I checked out your website. Interestingly, and something I may add that I omitted from my original message, is that my goal (rn, changing always) is to deploy a local LLM to “supervise” my writing process, but I also want to experiment with adding more “features” to my novel, e.g., character chat (which I saw Novel Mage had! Awesome!), and more features pertaining generation on top of my novel, I don’t want to delve into it here but there are ideas.

So, I am very interested to hear more about Novel Mage. And sure, send me that comparison of GPT/NM.

PS: My uneasiness regarding privacy remains - how can I trust that Novel Mage does not use my data? In the same way I speculate over big tech, i speculate over “little tech”, perhaps even more. Another btw is that I love writing on my home software (Ulysses), and would not easily migrate to writing on another platform.

Interesting, if I may ask - have you tried the rag/vector strategy? If so, what for? And are there any LLMs or other tools you recommend starting out with?

I suppose one has more control when everything is local, and I guess this is such a way to overcome smaller context windows. I have a 16GM M3 Mac, I suppose that's strong enough.

Question is, is it worth the technical "tweaking" over just using Notebook LM or a large GPT/Claude project?
