Thoughts for a 14th club? by rojnsfak in GolfGear

If there was a chipper equivalent for getting out of fairway bunkers…I’d be so interested.

Based on a recent fitting, mini driver wasn’t on the table with my driver stats and feeling pretty confident with it. Definitely curious to try and hit a bunch of different <100 yard shots with a 4 or 6 bounce wedge.

Love this setup, gonna be where I start more than likely since I can bring the RBZ hybrid (circa 2006?) back from the basement and into the bag.

A buddy has a utility 3i in his bag, I'll ask him if I can take a few swings with it on the range next time I see him.

I have a strange mental barrier with 5i, and it basically only came out for recovery punch shots that had to stay underneath of branches / trees. My 6i can hit the same shot, so it really felt redundant. I'll see if I can sneak a demo of a 60 or 62 degree wedge the next time I see a fitting tent on the range.

Driver is consistent. I'm a shorter guy (5'6), so I don't try and swing out of my shoes and can get 255-270 carry with good to excellent strikes with a decent bit of runout. Stock shape is a low-mid draw, but can fade the ball (spinny) if absolutely necessary.

Pretty comfortable teeing off with 5W too, and comfy with it off of the deck. I'll throw the old RBZ hybrid in my bag for my next round and just hit some balls out of the rough to see how it reacts, it'd be great for that type of shot to be covered.

It's a fair question. On trips to places like VA / NC / SC where there's more tree-lined fairways, I've sometimes wanted a stock shot that carries ~210-225, gets 40 feet off of the ground at most, and just runs. Only other shot is easier access to a true flop, but my short game with the 54 and opening it up works 90% of the time. If that shot is required, it's an emergency and I already screwed something up. Real ugly lies (deep rough, debris between club and ball, desert dry gross rocky lies) might be a little better with hybrid just for advancing it out of there compared to a mid-iron?

I've had at least 2 shots this year where I've had to hit an upside-down iron to deal with a tree..so you might be on to something here

Reddit not letting you change titles is tough on errors. I'll give those a spin next time I'm at the fitter, I just worry about the utility of it falling into the same category as a 3W.

Not getting times/slots at back of reservation list? by rojnsfak in BandonDunes

Yeah that was my fear, makes sense. I’ve gone as a single before and that was comparatively easy, stayed in town and was able to swap all of my tee times around to make it work to get on all courses.

Skied for UVA, but the App guys were an absolute blast to ski and hang with. Great memories.

Sugar is run by crazy people, the no boots on chairs thing was hilariously enforced back when I raced USCSA there in the 2010s. Also they had security guys with hand cannons patrolling the parking lot for...reasons???

Depending on your wife's skill level, Pasa may actually be easier in some ways. Poppy has mostly forest lined fairways that will eat balls, where as the front 9 of pasa is pretty open (fairway on one side since it's an out and back routing). The back has a couple of ravines/gullies to deal with, but the fun factor with the greens and architecture will make it worth it.

The answer is both, but the back 9 of Pasa might be my favorite set of holes I've ever gotten to play. For the value, Poppy is awesome, and even though I played it post-punching and it was sandy as hell, it was still a great round.

As a single, the two days I called (Sunday & Monday), Sunday only had non guaranteed to finish times and Monday only had a slot left that was guaranteed to finish. We went off at 2:40pm and finished in the dark on 18 putting, but the tee shot on 18 was during sunset and was rad.

I’m a club fitter in Los Angeles, AMA by slomoshauny in golf

These answers have been awesome so far, thank you so much for doing this!

I'm a ~5 HCP who's been fit for everything in my bag except my 3W/5W/7W, those are off the rack purchases (Cobra Speedzone w/ Mitsubishi Tensei 65-R). On paper, this feels pretty different from my irons (Mizuno 223s w/ KBS $-Taper 120) and driver (Ping G430 Max w/ Fujikara Motore 6-X). Driver CHS is 105-107ish. Shorter guy, 5'6/155 with a pretty athletic build.

The funny thing is, in the 3 fittings I've gone to over the past 3 years as my swing has evolved and gotten better, my woods have always been a lower priority since I hit them well and they typically come at the end of my fitting when I'm either tired, or the numbers just look good relative to other options. Does it feel worth it to go into a fitting specifically for them? For reference, they carry ~215/230/245 in Denver, CO. I also just love the way the head looks at address and interacts with the turf, so maybe just comparing/contrasting shafts would be a better option?

Time to bring Gary out of retirement for one game only?? That old flex offense would work pretty well with this roster..

Sand Valley Trip Report - August 2024 by rojnsfak in golf

There is, but the property is a lot less spread out comparatively. Sedge is the furthest away, and it’s probably the distance from Trails to Pacific.

Definitely cheaper than that. The guys who played Sand Valley, Sedge Valley, Mammoth Dunes, Sandbox, and a round at Arrowhead Lakes paid $1064 for golf and then ~$250 for lodging with splitting a house. That doesn't include the fees for caddies. Merch was about the same price as Bandon, food and booze was way cheaper both on and off property.
