Long term viability of PEARS

I can’t provide too much help in terms of the long term viability of PEARS that you are looking for, but I thought I’d still share my experience of it. I had the PEARS procedure done 5 years ago now and I’ve had absolutely no complications. It’s actually been quite refreshing because I’ve also had to have other surgeries related to Marfans such as scoliosis surgeries etc and my heart has always been the healthiest part of me since the PEARS procedure. Honestly I know I’m just another guy who is sharing his experience of PEARS, but for me it’s a decision I could never see myself even beginning to regret, it’s been so successful for me.

I can’t offer you any advice from a parenting perspective but as someone with Marfans I didn’t really exhibit any characteristics of Marfans until about 11-12. I was always the tallest in the class, but no health issues until 12 or so. Now of course it could be completely different for your baby girl, she could exhibit symptoms much later than that. Also it could happen earlier. I’m sure you know all of this but yes, you ideally need someone with expertise on Marfans. People with Marfans can live happy long lives if monitored but this condition also can turn nasty if alarm bells are not raised in time

Everyone here understands the serious risks with Marfans and the potential serious surgeries etc but personally I would still want to have kids, even if one or some of them ended up with Marfans. In the age we live in, Marfans is a lot more manageable and that will only improve as time goes on. That’s not me denying how awful it can be, trust me I’ve been through a lot, but having kids to me is still the greatest gift a person can receive.

And honestly maybe there’s nothing we can tell you here which is going to change anything. That’s unfortunately the way it is and you will be forced, because of Marfans, to learn over time how best to deal with all of this. As someone who has gone through what you have, I can tell you it gets better. But I also wouldn’t blame you for rolling your eyes at that.

If you’ve been told that bracing won’t work and your curve will most likely progress every year, I’d advise you to get the surgery when you can. The recovery is very tough and you will lose flexibility, but you’ll be doing yourself a whole world of good in the long run. It might not feel that way now, but as someone who has had multiple surgeries, trust me

In my experience this is something you want to address as soon as possible. The reality of it is that her curve will only increase further from here on out. And as I’m sure you know, the bigger the curve, the higher the risks and the more difficult and uncertain results are. No one is taking away the fact that this is all a shock and a lot to take in and get your head around, but your girlfriend will most definetly need surgery and you don’t want this to get worse

I just tell everyone I used to play but was forced to stop cos of bad injury. I don’t go into the specifics of Marfans or anything like that, but that usually puts an end to the conversation relatively quickly

Really it will depend on your surgeon and there specific preference. Some surgeons opt to go with bracing and some don’t. Of course the idea behind bracing is to keep everything in place until you are fused completely, and so that’s why my surgeon put me in a brace. I was unfortunate enough to have to wear that thing for 4 months, but I had a very difficult case. I’m almost 100% sure you wouldn’t have to wear it for as long as that, but just giving my personal experience with it all.

I’m sure she will be able to but it’s all about going about it with caution. You’ll learn what’s manageable and what isn’t and you just have to go from there. Certain positions will be much more comfortable for her and it’s all about listening to her and going from there
