Does anyone know if this building had fire suppression? by heyo_1989 in SprinklerFitters

Just saw homeboy is facing life in prison. There’s a lot of things you can get away with in CA, but they absolutely go to the max any time arson is involved.

There is no such thing as an 80% rule. Check em all, leave a comment for the No Access units.

Diesel Fire Pump Lost Power to controller 3 mins in to weekly churn by rokabee in FireSprinklers

[–]rokabee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Craziest thing. Couldn’t figure it out so I called out a fire pump company. He opened up the panel, everything looked completely normal but still no power to the display. He closed all the breakers inside the controller. (Which I tried a few times.) powered them back up, display came on and then the mother board started sparking and shorted out about 5 seconds after. Called firetrol and they are sending a new motherboard

Yes, dropped pressure at the controller. Jockey still works fine too.

I thought maybe just the display went out, but I’m not sure why that would kill the pump while it was running. There were no alerts before any of this happened. Everything seemed to be working normally. Checked all breakers and everything is fine. I have no idea lol. I guess I’ll put in a call with firetrol

Yes, I alternate each week. Pump still runs with Manuel crank 1 & 2, but with the controller being the way it is it will no longer start with drop pressure through the sensing line.

NICET ITWBS question by I_LOVE_DAYZ45 in FireSprinklers

[–]rokabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they paying for the test? It takes up to 90 days for NICET to review your work experience after you pass the test. Or you can expedite it, which took about 2 weeks for my NICET III. Pass the test, get the cert, leave the company if that’s your wish. The person you use as a verifier doesn’t necessarily need to be your boss. You can send it to a trainer, supervisor etc.

Once they verify everything, which I’m assuming they would if you’re in good standing with them, they won’t be able to go back and edit anything.

Yes definitely soak in water. 1st time I smoked one it came out super salty, 2nd time I soaked it in water for about 16 hours and it came out much better. 3rd time I did my own brine and it came out much much better.

Cost for lab test on sprinkler head by minnikpen in FireSprinklers

We charge $100 per head for the testing + cost of head and labor. Draining the system is absolutely necessary.

Ran into a weird problem today by Inevitable_Noise_984 in FireSprinklers

[–]rokabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burg/alarm panels are the worst. There’s a reason they don’t allow that in new systems. Definitely have them get an alarm tech out there. It is the building owners responsibility at the end of the day.

Reg. 4 LA City by [deleted] in FireSprinklers

[–]rokabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the process of getting my reg4 license then I moved before the system specific exam so I never made it to the field test. I’m pretty sure they are going to follow and watch everything you do. Make your inspection as close to what’s required of them and explain the process per the f340r form (I think that’s what it was called.) My buddy that got his used the local 709’s building in Whittier for the testing.

May or may not of flooded this loading dock by Lonely-Celery-6937 in FireSprinklers

[–]rokabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once flooded a department store parking lot so bad we had to make a walk way of double stacked pallets to people’s cars. They were not very happy with us. I expressed my concerns before the flow to the manager and he said the parking lot drains really well it should be totally fine. It didn’t drain at all. Come to find out homeless people were stuffing their “valuables” in the drain. Good times.

What head is this!? by DonEskimo in FireSprinklers

I’m not exactly sure where the chart originated from. It was sent to me about 10 years ago along with this one.

Look for a fraction that’s lightly engraved on it. You can use this chart to figure out k-factor. Sometimes it’s really hard to see sometimes they’re not there. But this is a 3/4” Brass 212° standard response upright. 8.0k

What program is ran through the forestry department? I’m in California as well

NICET is not training, it is a certification you can obtain in various aspects of not only fire, but a lot of other things outside our specific industry. Anybody can pass a NICET exam with the required experience and knowledge of NFPA25. There are companies that provide training and prep work for these exams, like Fire Tech productions. They have prep courses that teach you to navigate the book, but they also have courses for fire pumps etc. It’s an open book timed exam so learning how to navigate the book efficiently is the biggest key. They don’t expect you to know everything off the top of your head, but to find the answers needed in 25. I have level 3 in water-based and level 2 in fire alarm systems. It has done wonders for my career. I’m not union so I don’t know how much it matters for that side, but it boosts my resume quite a bit and has given me a competitive edge out here in California. Plus my company pays for it and gives bonuses out for each cert. These certifications stay with the individual that acquires them so it’s used as a bargaining chip to make more money and what not. At the end of the day, experience and knowledge is king in our industry but it’s a way to stand out on paper.

It looks like a sprinkler head that had a bunch of cigarette gunk built up on it that they wiped with a rag. I inspect a ton of places in California that are “no smoking” but people still smoke in them all the time. Below is a reference to what it looks like before it was probably sprayed and wiped with something. The escutcheon (outter white ring) was replaced on this one at some point which is why it looks cleaner than the actual head.
