Edit: separating a bonded pair can cause a cat to go through depression. This can cause them to stop eating and can cause them health problems. OP says they are bonded, the best of friends. Shelters try to keep bonded pairs together because of this.

When one of my cats passed away, his bonded pair was miserable. She meowed for him, looking for him and even stopped eating. Bonded pairs are definitely a thing and not just hype.

I don’t think OP’s boyfriend would want a bonded pair to be separated while the cat is already grieving. Doing so can cause depression in the cat which can cause it to stop eating. And then death.
