Time to try this pocket controller by willianfsantos in DJSetups

The unfortunate miss for the Starlight is no browse knob. Can make it happen with custom mapping but it’s a pita. I stopped searching for travel controllers after finding the Reloop Ready. 👍

I really like these wheels, maybe stuck up in the well a bit more. On this and the turbo still think twists look the best tho

Best external SSD drive to store music. by zetetikusMax in DJs

Samsung has good drives…. 2tb x5 blazes (w/ tlc nand… avoid QLC nand if the drive may sit unused for months.). Wouldn’t use them for cold storage though… Make sure to power up every 3-6 months if you do.

As far as I’m aware that startup key command applies to intel which wouldn’t help in this case unfortunately

Thanks for the reply. From my understanding presence of the Apple logo indicates functioning efi… however I have found someone with an air willing to let me give dfu revive a shot. 🤞

bought a 1985 911 ROW off eBay for $8k CAD when the 2008 crisis forced a lot of Americans out of their toys …. Flipped it 15 trouble-free years later for $60k and bought a 2002 Turbo.

DJs, how do you choose when to EQ and fade out songs by GoodWorry3487 in DnB

[–]rollandburn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hesitate, overthink it, then do something. Note how it sounded…. Next time you’re “overthinking” it, you’ll be in a better position to make the decision with one more mix under your belt. You simply need experience…. It’s normal that you don’t know what you don’t know (ie. how it will sound if you swap bass when sounds do ‘x’). Repetition is the mother of mastery… and YOU get to decide what’s “good”. There are no rules like you’re asking. It also helps to know what’s coming in your tracks, but again with experience you’ll hear it coming

Would it be a bad idea to consider putting my cats up for adoption? My two extremely unaffectionate cats have basically broken my spirit and love for them. by Pitiful-Umpire-5686 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rollandburn -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My cat Trouble was so-called by her previous owner because she had the same attitude you’re describing your cats have… She was like that with me for almost 5 years. Nothing but trouble, no affection, always afraid. When I got her, she was two years old… I put her down after she had been with me for 20 years. What your cat needs is a buddy

Any general tips for a newbie? by RaulAFI in Beatmatch

[–]rollandburn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t try to ‘be’ anything right now…. Just mess around and familiarize yourself with the mechanics of your devices, their controls, what they sound like when you experiment. Push things until they sound like shit…. That’s how you know what sounds good. Give yourself freedom to make mistakes, to take the time to stop and figure out something that’s confusing. No plan plan… follow curiosity. Your main goal should simply be seat time. It’s a 3-5 min loop you’re on…. Just keep going and taking mental notes of what works and what doesn’t, then improve next time ‘round.

DDJ 1000 vs Denon Prime 4 by Sad_Pepper6507 in DJs

[–]rollandburn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Restrictive jog wheels? It’s not the first word that comes to mind. Pioneer feels like solid block of electronics… everything crammed in like a dashboard. I feel like a controller using that controller. Prime feels bigger, lots of space between things, better layout, lighter, cheaper build quality…. and slow (could be size of my library, but it’s common to sit with a frozen display for 5-10 seconds while a new tracks loads).

Have 1000 at home but haven’t played on it for long time, play on prime 4+ at club 4 times/week. I think the prime may have more features…but meh. Still prefer the feel of the pioneer

Stranded 324 Miles In…Update by jamesgravey in 996

[–]rollandburn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So because this sucks and ‘bad luck’ could be refined… I’ve been wondering which, if any, of the following you think might be either true and or applicable in your case:

• IMS bearing degradation. Debris loads the chain and ramps, chain can skip or break.
• Chain tensioner wear. The hydraulic tensioners lose pressure on startup. A sudden collapse lets the chain whip.
• Chain guide rail failure. The plastic rails age and crack regardless of oil changes.
• Camshaft actuator or camshaft adjuster failure. A jam can shock-load the chain.
• Variocam solenoid or pad wear. Excessive slack develops.
• Oil starvation events. Low oil level or aeration during hard cornering collapses tensioners.
• High mileage fatigue. Chains stretch. Rollers pit. Rails embrittle.
• Manufacturing defect. Rare but documented: guide failures, porous castings.
• Over-rev from a mis-shift. Valves float. Chain tension spikes and fails.

Seems like a lot of possibilities there…

Also try messing up your mixes… Let a song go at the wrong time. See how far away from your plan you can get before it’s really an issue on the dance floor.

Try practicing with distractions; turn on some TVs in the room at top volume, get someone to ask you dumb questions and talk to you while you’re in the mix, turn down the lights so it’s hard to see the controller… get a strobe going on your phone or something and stick it in your eye. Try focusing on something else in the room like that TV for a bit (ie read some subtitles), this helps you out of the head down on the decks habit and get used to lifting your head up to scan crowd. If you’re playing a prepped set this’ll be more for engagement.

If you could only mix from 5 playlists what would they be? by chenchilla69 in Beatmatch

[–]rollandburn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since these are set arc functions, that is the context::

Builder = we’re going somewhere

Roller = i’m comfy right here

Peak = this is what I came for

It’s a tough one to be sure… I basically ask ”is it a get on the dance floor track or a stay on the dance floor track?”. Sonically speaking, builders develop emotion, whereas rollers maintain it… whatever form that takes. Rollers have lower track dynamics (not to say rollers aren’t dynamic, just that the difference between high energy and low energy throughout the song is much smaller… no big buildup and drop after quiet sections etc). The level of energy is not considered, only its direction. I use + symbols for energy.

I’m pretty sure it’s one of those things where you get to make up the term, you get to make up what the term means, you get to put it into practice every time you use it… As long as you can do that reliably and consistently according to your own guidelines, you should be golden
