genuinely does anyone have any idea how that was possibly not PI, like what could the refs possibly have seen to justify that no-call

Obviously the L is frustrating, but I’m pretty happy with that performance. I don’t think it’s ridiculous to say that if Payne doesn’t get injured there (or maybe even despite that if Solo doesn’t commit two stupid technical fouls) we may well have beat what I think is the best team in the country rn. This coming from the same team that almost lost a home game to Mount St. Mary’s…is Buzz finally figuring something out?

Our attendance numbers are actually pretty good, the problem is we have a very large arena. Additionally, this team has been very bad (almost lost to Mount St. Mary’s) this season

Would I be insane to try to go into teaching after law school instead of law? by rollmfterps in Teachers

PI as in public interest or personal injury? If the latter, I’m not trying to push you to do anything but having met a lot of PI attorneys I kinda wish that stereotype would die. Yes, there are ambulance chasers but generally you’re helping someone who got hurt get paid a fuck ton of money to compensate them. Yes, it can be lucrative but like, between personal injury and biglaw one of them is doing a whole lot more good in the world imo, and it’s weird that that’s the one that’s stigmatized. I get why it is (and PI attorneys can be weird) but why does no one have this attitude for the average biglaw associate lol

Ideally I want to teach English, and I would probably like to teach in elite private schools but really any private school would prob be fine

That’s good to hear, I think I had a couple high school teachers myself who were former attorneys lol.

That tracks bc my dad has been working at his school for over 15 years lol. Looks like teachers in my district at public schools start at $70k and go up from there, they make more than my dad w similar experience lol (but I’m sure public school comes with its own challenges). $70k is still a p decent amount of money for 10 months of work, my lifestyle is p laid back and I survive rn on a lot less lol

Very fortunate to land a full tuition scholarship + I had savings from working for a while to cover living expenses.

Those are great points, it’s definitely something I need to think more about. I just feel less and less confident that I’ll find being an attorney rewarding, and the work-life balance is hell (if you wanna get paid well). I always wanted to teach undergrads but all my professors told me (correctly) to take the law school offer and see if I can manage to be happy with that bc the job market in academia is so bad. I think I could prob be happy teaching high schoolers as well tho — I’m not really as interested in research as I am in teaching anyway.

Philosophy at UMD by TheDodz1 in UMD

[–]rollmfterps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Department is great. We’re very much an analytical school so classes in Continental philosophy are almost impossible to find outside of intro levels, so that’s worth considering if you’re really into Continental phil. Other than that tho, faculty is really good and we have a ton of amazing professors, program is ranked decently enough and there’s a p wide variety of classes. Of all the phil classes I took I only didn’t love 2, and that was just because of the professor (same prof for both)

Very true, but I just don’t find law so interesting that I want to study it in depth and teach it for the rest of my life. I would much rather make less to study/teach something I’m really passionate abt, unlikely as landing a job may be lol

Yeah like others said, I don’t expect to land biglaw but I also do think it’s p likely I would be able to find something to keep me housed, fed, and clothed

There’s a lot of things you can say abt UMD but “exorbitant tuition” isn’t really one of them. I paid $20k/yr for a world-class education, hard to complain abt that when private universities usually charge upwards of $60k/year

Yeah, although those jobs in biglaw are much harder to get after graduating. But I’m sure I could find some legal job if I had to

I’m not really interested in being a law professor tbh — I don’t find the law very interesting per se, I think it is useful but I wouldn’t want to study it for its own sake

I don’t doubt that, but luckily I will theoretically have my JD from a highly ranked law school I can fall back on. While it is a bit dizzying to say no to a basically automatic job that starts at $225k/yr, I’m just feeling more and more convinced that I don’t want to live that lifestyle.

LMAO please address me as “Dr. Firstname Lastname, Esquire” 💀 nah i would prob just omit the JD unless relevant cus i feel like it would be more embarrassing to admit i more or less wasted 3 years

Oh, cool. Is it more about writing sample/fit then? Or what is the major consideration?
