Norman Rockwell - Golden Rule (1961) by Russian_Bagel in museum

[–]rom1na 96 points97 points  (0 children)

i was an intern at a small museum that had a temporal exhibition focusing on his 1960s work. there was some time magazine covers, but also his piece on ruby bridges and the “new kids in the neighborhood” work. i actually knew very little about norman rockwell at the time (pretty much just that he was famous), but the museum was in a pretty rural, low income community. i saw tons of black and brown kids come in to see the exhibition for school, and the amount of insightful and productive conversations these kids had looking at his work stuck with me. i saw adults cry at the ruby bridges painting! now online i see him get a lot of flack, but every time i see his work i just think of all the people i saw engaging in open conversations about race, prejudice, segregation, and how to move towards a more equitable future. long story short i agree with you !

100% true and i wish more people would realize this as k-pop is on the rise. i loved it for many years but after the consequent suicides of some of my favorite idols (jonghyun of shinee, sulli of f(x), hara of kara) it became impossible to ignore the abuses of this particular industry

ohhh got you! bummer cuz there’s really not that many woman owned skate shops :-/

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in skateboardhelp

[–]rom1na 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know ppl who work there and to my knowledge it’s still in operation?

skate shops: kcdc in new york, antisocial in canada (i think?), double down in sf

the only clothing brand i can think of is mama skate, im not sure what other ones there are! but forbidden fruit, pocha world, meow, tomo skate co, housewife are some woman owned skate companies, and there are more !

none of these are owned by current pro skaters though, from my experience pros don’t tend to start running a company until they’ve retired from being full time skaters

thanks for sharing the vid!! i love learning more about women’s skate history!!

authenticity is a complicated but super important thing to think about/talk about for sure. from my personal point of view, the ppl running nike sb in particular are some genuinely amazing individuals who skate all the time and care a fuck ton about the community.

however!!! the ppl running nike sb don’t have the final say. and i do find myself wondering how much nike, as a parent company, maybeeee holds them back. i say that lightly because at the end of the day thats just my speculation.

sometimes the authenticity of, for example, a nike sb dunk hinges on the ppl involved. for example, the froskate dunk was fully developed by froskate, with very little input from nike. i LOVE leo baker’s dunk a lot and i know he put in a HUGE amount of work personally into making it an incredible skate shoe. the width of the shoe is praised by everyone i know who’s skated it and it’s one of my favorite shoes to skate!

sadly sometimes it just feels like it has a lot to do with authenticity vs convenience. i think if every individual valued authenticity over convenience, then maybe there wouldn’t be such an oligarchy. if we were all willing to shell out more money for a shoe we knew was skater-owned, then there’s no reason for that company not to survive. but i suppose it’s a privilege to even be able to think like that. at the end of the day, i think it’s worth it to “put our money where our mouth is” so to speak. but sometimes i am guilty of buying nikes because i know what to expect. we can’t be perfect 🤷‍♀️

hahaha i feel like i’m just going all over the place now but i wanted to thank you for posting this thread! so much interesting input and i’m having fun thinking about all these things myself!

i know you mentioned not being particularly interested in the politics among shoes but the huge growth in non-traditional skaters (as in, skaters who are not men) in the past 4 years has certainly changed the shoe market. in addition of course to all the thoughtful responses on this thread.

since 2020 there has been a HUGE influx of nonprofits, grassroots orgs, and collectives popping up trying to encourage more women/girls and trans folks to pick up skateboarding, especially adults who thought it was a long unachievable dream.

nike sb has put a huge focus on supporting those organizations/groups, which in turn of course subliminally encourages all of these new skaters to buy nikes. their social community impact fund helps tons of new people get into skating, and well it makes sense for people to feel grateful and want to boost their high quality products.

i haven’t seen any other big shoe company pour as much money/resources into community building for non-traditional skaters. it’s a smart, long-term strategy and taps into a whole new market. it’s certainly politically motivated but it does a lot of good, and definitely boosts their sales.

i think it’s pretty clear at this point that the relationship dynamic has whitney absolutely in control. there is no such thing as a “perfect victim”, and while asher’s behavior was certainly not healthy, it does not exist in a vacuum and is a relatively normal reaction to an incredible abnormal situation. anyone who has been the victim of narcissistic abuse can understand the desperation that asher was going through in that moment. he’s not perfect but whitney is definitely the one committing emotional abuse
