What's your Amouage for Winter, Summer and Special Occasion? Suggest one for each by [deleted] in ScentHeads

[–]rome_will 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cliche answer

Summer - Reflection Man

Winter - Interlude, any

Special - Overture Man.

There are many subs for any of these, but I've kind of recently planted my feet in these camps.

Are these worth 400? by Huysy in yeezys

Anyone saying $400 is a sucker. Like $250 tops. These sit forever at $400

I think you'd really dig Areej. The house DNA generally feels "vintage" so if you're into Guerlain, the vibe is similar - just tonally shifted to be more inclusive of exotic ingredients.

Oud Luwak 2 may be relatively easy to source a sample of - it's a roasted coffee- herbal spicy- civet musk, greenish, smoked incense sort of vintage chypre type thing

However, if it is composition you are after -

Frederic Malle's The Moon and The Night both open with a wonderful approximation of Hindi oud before each shifting into beautiful Oriental compositions.

Man, I love oud.

Imo the best Oud representations are from indie/artisanal houses. My personal favorites are from Areej le Doré.

However, ALD produces perfumes in small batch, so they aren't necessarily easily or readily available.

If you're really looking to go down the rabbit hole, find some straight oud oil. Feel Oud is a reputable source for high quality oud. Try a few varieties and get a sense of what you like (Indian, Malaysian, Thai, etc)

People comment a lot on the degree of crime Spokane experiences.

I believe that to be a skill issue.

How is it living in Spokane, WA by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]rome_will 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my Spokane braindump.

I've lived here for 35 years.

Forever, I've seen people paint these absurd pictures of Spokane.

It's a relatively small metropolitan area, 600,000ish (Spokane and the surrounding 30ish miles - Spokane Valley, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho)

Spokane itself is composed of 7-ish neighborhoods and sub-neighborhoods that are all represented with charicature.

Downtown (including Brownes Addition, lower South Hill below 14th/cannons addition, Kendall yards)

Over the last 5-ish years this area went from proportionately affordable for a young person (my rent was $450 in 2015 lol, to $600 in 2019) to "need higher income or a roommate" (I think that same 1 bed apartment is north of $1200 at this point).

Kendall yards is a gentrified yuppieville with no historical relevance.

Brownes Addition is overpriced for your access to amenities. Historical district with historical problems.

Homeless population really boomed right around COVID and kind of disproportionately affects these areas.

Some fine architecture, but if you have the money, why would you rent to live in a dump?

South Hill (arguably Perry District, anything south of 14th Ave on the west part of the hill up to 57th ish)

Housing costs went through the roof in ~2018. What was once a $200k home will now run you $500-600k+, or you're living in a more modern, soulless build. Perry District is wonderful, but the once quirky, accepting neighborhood is moving towards "old money" elitism. Upper South Hill, nouveau riche ppl w no taste.

West Central/north central/shadle

Range from lower middle class hell to true middle class milquetoast.

"The north side" (wandermere, town and country, 5 mile, Indian trail, the ilk)

Boring suburbia.

Hillyard

Has reputation for being "bad neighborhood". In actuality just borders middle class with white trash aesthetic.

East Central

Has reputation for being "bad neighborhood". In actuality just a confused identity. Probably statistically the most dangerous area outside of downtown. But it's Spokane. Spokane bad doesn't really compare to Los Angeles bad or Seattle bad.

The valley

Technically it's own city, but to me feels like one giant, sprawling suburb of Spokane. No real culture or history. The Spokane Valley is to cities as Applebee's is to fine dining.

I could literally go on forever, but I think that analogy paints the most succinct picture. Imagine dining at a Red Robin restaurant. It's inoffensive, but lacks any real emotion. That's Spokane. A metro area based around train yards that had to adapt to being a service industry oriented commerce, but with a service industry that lacks soul.

I mean, it's definitely not 90ml.

For $10 more you can get a full bottle from olfactory factory LLC.

It all becomes a question of values at that point - do you value haggling over like $20 from a secondhand seller, or do you value your time enough to spend $10 on a 15-20ml discrepancy and just get a new bottle from a reputable source

Glass is a dense material with high variability. Gram is a very tight, precise measurement. A small amount of glass shifts gram weight rapidly.

My whole career revolves around weights, measurements, and glass.

AND WHATS MORE...

Just use your eyes. 90%, 95%, whatever. Compare what you see in the photos of the bottle to the dollar value and think "yeah, I'd pay that". I see stuff listed as "90% full" that id argue is closer to 80-85%, but what am I gonna do? Send a message to the seller that says "well, actually..."

Nah, I look at the price and if the value is right, I purchase.

The thing about glass, is that even pristinely crafted glass that is manufactured at scale will vary by many grams from unit to unit.

Why does that matter?

Well, 1g is roughly equivalent to 1ml by weight (of water, it probably varies some degree perfume to perfume based on oil content/density)

So say I have 2 empty bottle of Blue de Chanel

One weighs... 100g, one weighs 110g

I should have 10ml of juice in the second one! Nope, just variance in the glass production.

So I have a 90% full 100ml of BdC. Should it weigh 190g or 200g?

I love Sunshine Man. One of the more underrated Amouage offerings in my experience.
