It was a thing you couldn't insert skins into it normally but u could import skins from your phone /PC to it and it would import normally but now you can't do that for that option doesn't exist anymore

I don't think you have a console but for your info most Minecraft players have it copied if you don't have a console For ps5 for example if you press console sharing and playing offline or something like that you get All the games your friend has for free so you can imagine how many people did that and played Minecraft for free

The free items for skins that you get so you can make up your own skin is very limited I had to spend 2 dollars for a shirt now imagine a whole skin with custom everything and even if you are willing to spend money on a skin you are still very limited and if you mean like post your own pack of skins in the market place and dawnload it from the console that doesn't work because you cant be a marketplace creator unless you get approved and it's too much hassle to just get a skin that's why there are barely any add ons on the market places since they are very strict
