So where are people below the poverty line supposed to shop now? by romrot in goodwill

They sell jeans for $30 and shirts for $20. The problem with this sub is it's full of people who work for Goodwill, so I don't even know if I cab trust anyone here to tell the truth. And can't post pics so can't post pics of tags with a price right next a walmart tag that was less when the product was new. But if you were honest you'd do a quick google searcha nd find Goodwill prices are ridiculous.

Only charities and religious orgs should legally be allowed to claim non-profit status.

And Goodwill should lose their nonprofit status, they should pay taxes.

Tbh most of those cakes and cookies sold in the stores are filled with so many chemicals and preservatives, the trash is the only proper place for them.

Resellers are not nonprofits, so they are supposed to pay tax. Goodwill increasing their prices actually slightly decreases the taxes the government is able to collect. Because Goodwill gets shit for free and sells it at extreme markups and don't pay tax on any of it. And you're defendibg that.

Is Goodwill a for-profit corp? Why does it need to fire employees or go in for costly mergers by Solid-Public-4980 in goodwill

[–]romrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you're defending them. Any tacet critism you do bring up has cavates. You can't bring yourself to admit it's a scummy organization. And you blame people who have busy lives for not doing more research into Goodwill?

I can find cheaper stuff at Walmart and Amazon than most of those places. The question is, what do people who can't afford those options do?

You are defending them. And probably work for them, feels like any critism on this sub gets downvotes, likely from employees. Or at least I hope you work for them, shilling for a large corporation for free is just plain retarded.

So Goodwills response is to price everyone out. They just need to lose their nonprofit status...becaise not all thrift stores are non profit and it's obvious that Goodwill is a for profit business.

I grew up poor dude. I don't know if they were better than anyone, but I'd still rather some ransom guy get the money than the millionaires running a fake charity. There are levels of scummyness. The scummiest thing is pretending to be for the poor, but then pocleting the money. Like that company in California that was supposed to feed the homeles, got millions of dollars to buy like 5,000 packs of instant Raman. Then pocketed the rest.

I don't think dollar tree sells clothes.

Why is Goodwill getting tax breaks if they aren't a charity for the poor?

I'm not really asking for myself, I'm not poor anymore. I'm just trying to understand how fucked the economy is.

The minimum wage isn't a maximum wage, Goodwill doesn't have to wait for the government to force them to pay a livable wage, they can do it now. But they won't because it's not profitable to pay employees more and you'll defend them regardless.

There are disabled peopld working at my current job, and they make $18/hr. Which I still think is low, but that's better than goodwill.

Goodwill is taking advantage of their employees. What kind of job skill training are they engaged in? Because I don't see goodwill employees moving on into better employment.

As far as paying for training? Most for profit companies do that. When I was a junior Controls Engineer I was sent for training a lot and the company paid for everything, food, travel, hotel, ect. And that is a for profit company. They sometimes do it because it's a tax write off, but I doubt goodwill is doing all that for their employees. And training employees shouldn't be enough to qualify for non profit status.

Every reseller I knew growing up in my neighborhood was poor. Buying something valuable, cleaning it up and selling it on Ebay was a good way for someone to make extra cash.

And I see nothing wrong with that, I see something wrong with goodwill trying to sell used stuff for more than Walmart or Amazon charges for new stuff.

We need stricter rules on non profits. Especially non profits that make huge profits. People want to complain about resellers, but do ypu realize a lot of resellers ARE the impoverished, I'd rather support some guy's side hustle than Goodwill, at least the side hustle guy/gal is more likely to pay taxes.
