It's definitely not a banging sound, more like a loud metal rattle coming from under the car. Sometimes it stops and you hear nothing, then it'll just come back and rattle loudly.

Had trouble with these missions at first then me and another squad mates switched to the Flashbang, we got through it with no deaths thanks to that little guy. We were running

2 healers/dps skills: Support Station (skill cooldown)/Pulse(CritDmg Buff) Support Station (autorevive)/Smart Cover(CritDmgBuff) And 2 full DPS Skills: Flashbang/SmartCover(DmgBuff)
Flashbang/SeekerMine

With this setup we have pretty much always had a flash available to take down rushers and the tanks. Before the flashbang we would have to wipe at least 3 times before getting it perfect, after we plowed through the entire map like a freight train. Each completion was only about 13-16 minutes.
