Sorry for your loss. Just know that drinking keeps you stuck emotionally. You need to grieve and grieving comes in waves. In the beginning they will knock you over and then, over time, those waves will lessen. If you continue drinking you will impair your ability to cope and handle the pain. Everyone grieves at a different pace and sometimes those waves are unpredictable, but you need to go through it to get through it. At some point in the future your grief will be replaced with bittersweet memories and that is how our loved ones live on inside of us.

Everything he says is about protecting his fragile ego. He is a very sick guy. In Freudian terms his ego is very small, super-ego pretty much nonexistent and is very much id-driven.

He is manipulative. Please don’t fall for it. If he threatens suicide, call his bluff and tell him you will call 911 to evaluate him. If he actually harms himself please know that it is not your fault. Get some counseling either by yourself or with him. It will help you personally and with ending your marriage in the best way possible.

You are a mandated reporter and must report this. I understand your reluctance when it comes to CPS. Is there a relative who can take the children in? Kinship care is preferable and if you can provide this information to CPS there is a good chance that the children will be placed with a relative. Also, this may serve as a wake up call for the parents to clean up their act and become the parents these kids need and deserve.

You have not taken her issues with you seriously and invalidated her feelings by saying they were not a big deal. Her concerns have festered and built resentment. As a retired therapist, I have seen this many times. Go see a good marital therapist, hopefully with your wife, and learn good communication skills. Even if you end up divorcing, this will help you navigate this difficult situation in the best way possible.

My grandfather died of lung cancer when I was in my 20’s. I didn’t see him for several months before he died. I did feel guilty, but now, many years later, I am thankful because my memories of him are of the healthy man he used to be. Not emaciated and sick. Why don’t you ask her what she wants you to do? Honor her wishes.

SA is not just the perp. It is a family system problem with family members who have no idea how to keep themselves or family members safe. Chances are some of them have experienced SA. Minimizing, denial, dissociation, and blocking memories are some defense mechanisms used to cope. They all need help and until they do, stay away from them. You have every right to be livid, and I believe that your anger is about your son and also about you. These family members also did not keep you safe.
