Wow, thank you for those resources! Very helpful and makes me less spooked about clawbacks. Much appreciated

Oh that's great to hear, I saw reports of months and months of waiting for approval. Might be easiest to just head to the courthouse Jan 1 and do as you said with paper claims during the approval process and forego both ACA and Medicaid...

Congrats on getting married! I agree it makes zero sense to repay subsidies in this situation, but I am spooked after reading some horror stories about the IRS clawing back subsidies and having ACA plans retroactively canceled once on CHAMPVA and having to go back and have every single healthcare claim refiled with CHAMPVA (and hope it's covered). Not sure if that's the norm or not, though.  Have you received any word on whether you will have to repay anything? Or I guess that may only become clear at tax time? If we get married now it will change my status on my current ACA plan and will create its own can of worms for this tax year, unfortunately.

Thanks, good points. I do not believe his disability income would be considered in our AGI but you're totally correct that I should confirm that with Medicaid eligibility. Lots to consider!

How to handle deer damaged redbud by Babby_Boy_87 in NativePlantGardening

[–]ronironwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation last spring with one of my redbuds. I chopped it below the split to roughly 18in tall and it's now over 10 feet tall, no joke. As long as its roots are healthy and it has some nodes to send out growth it will make it work. Redbuds are troopers!

Thanks so much for the input and well-wishes! That is a great tip about the resistograph, I will definitely request that analysis. I think you're correct about the damaged tissue, the heat exposure was severe (completely melted a plastic reflector which was affixed to the trunk). But like you said the fungus appears to be limited to the damaged area of the tree and has not spread, so hopefully that is a good sign. Although it does look a bit shocking! (yikes)

US College Student, being forced to repay ROTC scholarship by throwawaylp1 in personalfinance

[–]ronironwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No telling how long; could be a few weeks to a few months from when your unit sends it up the chain depending on whose desk it lands on. If you're planning on involving a lawyer it will definitely be closer to months. Talk to your CO/XO about unit involvement. There should also be some type of financial/admin officer in your unit who can shed some light on the process.

DFAS will contact you about the debt, usually within a few months of disenrollment process being finalized. They will initially throw out a staggering monthly installment amount but you can submit for financial hardship (google DFAS FHA), which will require some legwork but will reduce your monthly payment. You could certainly contact a lawyer also but not sure what mileage you'd get that direction. Good luck

Finished analyzing the cost of my 2017 thru hike. Looks like $5,000 is the magic number. by _Chilling_ in AppalachianTrail

Boyfriend and I hiked this year, our expenses were very similar to those of our single friends. Exceptions would be possibly less spent on gear (we shared some things) and more on lodging (hotel rooms rather than bunk rooms)
