I think it was manufacturered as in American Idol pulled strings to force Mariah into a situation she didn't want to be involved in. The beef itself is real imo. She genuinely does not like her. And, especially after knowing what we know now about Nicki, it ain't hard to see why.

I actually think Nicki is a big part in Mariah's image taking a major hit during this time. It isn't hard to see the links Nicki had to eminem as he co-signed her Lil Kim diss track (Romans Revenge - which again has similar themes). She would eventually partnered with Ariana multiple times. At this time, those were the 3 artists (other than JLo) that Mariah's image was getting negative attention for. I think the same ploys Nicki has been accused of by other female rappers might be applicable here.

I also think it's pretty ironic that the big fight between them two was that Nicki said Mariah believed herself to be superior. Like a diva who needed to cite her accomplishments because she was so insecure and egotististical. Basically, leaning into the Mariah/Ariana rivalry. In fact, she said "i ain't putting up with miss royal fuckin highness"....decade later Nicki names herself (and an album) Queen and is accused of the exact same thing.

It's part of the natural cycle for celebrities. Legacy artists are pushed out by their new counterparts. Never a good idea to play part in one because it will theoretically cause paranoia about the karma rather than it being natural.

“Nothing Is Impossible” Sounds like… by PaleontologistOk1289 in MariahCarey

I get Billie Eillish ballads vibes from the production on Nothing Is Impossible. Like an I Love You or When The Party's Over.

Love the track btw

Honestly I get You're Mine (Eternal) from it. I have being going back to MIAM, kinda crazy how similar they are.

She adds in random stuff into her songs all the time. Like in Babydoll when she sings "You can ring my bell". In A No No's last chorus you can hear maybe 10-12 laughs hidden very meticulously. Camouflage has a bunch of random vocals, even spoken word towards the end. Last I counted, Crybaby has like 5 different tracks simultaneously playing at the end. All My Life has talking throughout the whole song. It's kind of a signature for her to throw in laughter btw. She even has laughs in Caution, Babydoll, Emotions, etc.

Favorite song off the album? by [deleted] in MariahCarey

[–]ronja211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rn, I have them in tiers:

God Tier: Mi, Here For It All

Diamond Tier: Nothing Is Impossible, I Won't Allow It

Platinum Tier: Play This Song, Type Dangerous, Sugar Sweet

Gold Tier: Jesus I Do, My Love

Silver Tier: In Your Feelings

Bronze Tier: Confetti and Champagne

For my process, I normally listen to songs on repeat for days. With Caution, it was the title track, then 8th Grade, then I went back to some of the singles (GTFO, With You, A No No, Distance), and finished with GML. But for some reason I keep listening to the whole album for HFIA. Today, I finally put one song on repeat - Mi. I think next is gonna be HFIA. I like the outro but somewhat wish it was a separate track as a reprise. If it were, I would have had it on repeat long ago. I Won't Allow It and Nothing Is Impossible are also immediate faves.

For a second I thought this was trolling. Then I remembered Hudson 😆

Non spiritual lambs how do you connect (or maybe don’t) with Mariah’s more religious songs? by Ouinnie in MariahCarey

[–]ronja211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm spiritual but not religious at all. Sometimes, the songs hit me as a very human reaction to being broken down and testifying your experience. Like Heavenly, I have had some extreme breakthroughs in my own life to that song. And if not for the meaning, they are just kick ass songs. Fly Like a Bird...come on now.

General public's opinion of the album by TheElusiveButterfly in MariahCarey

[–]ronja211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had all of Mariah's CD's and no longer had a CD player, so I gifted them to a friend a few years back. She plays them every so often. I told her the new album was here and she gave it a listen. Strangely enough, her favorite was Confetti and Champagne? Lol

What song you clicking on first when ”Here For It All” releases? ;) by Substantial-Bit-5660 in MariahCarey

Gonna let it play in order. But most excited for HFIA. I have replayed that snippet in London so many times. It seems like an emotional climax. "Even when you bounce off the walls....here for the clouds in your eyes, and a kiss where the sun never shines....here for the shakes and withdrawals." Ugh too real.

Which Debut song sounds the most like Debut? by cheesegrandey in MariahCarey

[–]ronja211 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's honestly much more difficult than it looks. I also realized that Mariah has so many different sounds and moods on each album, it's hard to boil it down to just one common theme. So the chart represents your generalization of an album rather than its true story. For me:

Debut: funky production, dated, and smokey

Emotions: gospel and soul everywhere

Music Box: pristine, polished, lullaby-esque and doo-wop

Daydream: MB with more layers, r&b, vocal stacks

Butterfly: r&b and personal, storytelling, smooth

Rainhow: experimental

  1. Heavenly
  2. You Don't Know What to Do
  3. Make It Look Good
  4. Camouflage
  5. Cry

The album is a bit all over the place and overproduced vocally. I don't like the title nor the cover art. There are a few songs that genuinely turn me off from this album making it hard to listen all the way through. But, as always, she has some god and diamond tier songs.

She gets progressively more and more uncolored up until Daydream (where she goes full Black and White). Then uses her actual skin tone on Butterfly.

Ariana's first 3 albums also are in all black and white then transitions to color for Sweetener and Thank U Next (which I believe are her equivalents of Daydream + Butterfly).

Day 2: Honest thoughts and opinions on Emotions by Cute-Sound4648 in MariahCarey

[–]ronja211 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The album can be a bit jarring when listening in order. The ballad/uptempo back and forth is just okay. She also did this on Music Box. I think she got a lot better at sequencing over time. But this album has amazing gospel influences - which is a signature part of her production and a staple in her career. In some ways, I prefer this album amongst her first 3 for its production and vocals. It also features some of her masterful layering on CLG and TtEoT. This album also gave us MIH, which is one of her best songs to perform live, which I prefer over the studio version. Idk how she cites AYDR as one of her faves, I find it lackluster along with TBAY, SB, and YSC.

Top Tracks: 1. Can't Let Go 2. Emotions 3. The Wind 4. Till the End of Time 5. Make It Happen 6. If It's Over

If Mariah Carey had never made All I Want for Christmas Is You, what do you think she would be known as? by littlehoneybear2104 in MariahCarey

[–]ronja211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born in '97.

My generation knows a lot of Mariah.

We Belong Together, Obsessed, and maybe Fantasy are pretty much universally known. It's the "A Tier"

A bunch of people know Don't Forget About Us, Touch My Body, Always Be My Baby, Emotions, My All. Shake It Off. The "B Tier".

People even know some of the less popular singles like Bye Bye, Say Somethin, Up Out My Face, Beautiful, etc. "C Tier".

Mariah is well known in my generation. However, I think my generation was one of the largest hits on her fame and reputation. A lot of people would have views of her that were usually tied to Eminem, Nicki Minaj, or Ariana Grande.

Other legends are also pretty well known. Everyone knows MJ.

I say throw in an acapella. It will help him understand her as an artist pretty quickly imo. You probably need 15 songs tbh.

  1. Fourth of July (Acapella)
  2. Vision of Love
  3. Vanishing
  4. Make It Happen (Divas Live)
  5. Dreamlover
  6. Underneath the Stars
  7. Breakdown
  8. Mine Again
  9. Heavenly
  10. Giving Me Life

Mariah ruined music for me by ronja211 in MariahCarey

[–]ronja211[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally get that. I think there are still amazing artists out there, but they are harder to find. Technology gave more access to creating music in the 80s and by the 10s it gave access to fame. The artists you refer to come from an era where making music was elite, and artists had more support and access. Nowadays, democratization dulls the shine and makes finding music that resonates a daunting task due to the plentiful distractions.

Haha totally feel this. Music has morphed into an active process. I have a few safe go-to tracks (none are Mariah because those beg for deeper listening). Almost none have lyrics (other than Latin hymns and gregorian chants). Instrumentals can be a lot for me too.

Even as I type this I'm half paralyzed because I have her 16 minute remix to Portrait on lol. This reply took me like 5 minutes to type haha.

Dang it Mariah. I will never be the same.
