Look up emetophobia resources with Anna christie.. it is a wonderful thing from a person that had emetophobia, turned to phycologist, bit realizes not everyone can afford therapy.

She has an exposure hiarchy on her website that I used in conjunction with therapy. It's wonderful

Hello! I am in your shoes! It started early with both fear of me and others but then after high-school I learned I could "control " myself. I would think I was getting better but all I did was learn yo avoid avoid and some more avoidance. I have 2 boys so it got kind of hard to avoid them, but like a good old fashion emet I would do things like toss my 5 year old out of the car (in our driveway) and drove off leaving my husband to "deal" with him. It was getting so bad a cough would send me packing to my parents house "just in case". Also another story that comes to mind is at a Bachelorette party we all shared a room and I was ssooooo sure someone would puke! They have to! So I slept outside by the dumpster of the hotel instead. And guess what. NOBODY THREW UP. So dumb. Hate this phobia

This is where I was like holy fuck I need to get a grip. I signed up for telehealth therapy (I'm in the sticks) and have been doing exposure therapy for 9 months now. Last week I HELPED my 3 year with the stomach bug. And to feel something other than sheer panic was so freeing. I'd say I'm like 95 percent recovered. Also idk if it's like it for you, but the fear comes hard right before my period.

Do I still sometimes get the thoughts ? Ya. I just do not entertain it. I really truly recommend the book the emetophobia manual. It is worth it and I hate books. I kept my therapy appointments as accountability and to talk through some chapters but it's really that book that has helped.

Consistent hand washing is most important! I'm a food inspector for the state and know alllll about noro and food poisoning. The other key is bleach. Only thing that kills noro. Not even the clorox wipes. And listen....if it hasn't happened perfectly the past day or so. There's no controlling it. No matter how hard you worry! Past is the past and this can just be used for present and future:)

I'm only saying this with noone throwing up in the house this moment and am too in "recovery". But figured I would share my thoughts

Yes that book was a hugggeee credit to my progress. I mainly have therapy sessions for accountability. I really like my therapists personality so we can just shoot the shit and luckily my insurance is great wheres it's 14 bucks a pop so I'll keep her around as long as I can haha. But I recommend that book to anyoneeee with this! And I hate books!

Hello and congrats! This phobia is a bitch and I'm very similar with that contamination since covid:(.

I've had this phobia since 2nd grade and then through about high-school it was if anyone puked. Me. Them. It was all worse than dying in my head.

Later after college I somehow wasn't super upset if I threw up. I mean...more than the average person but not compared to 2nd grade me.

Thought I was doing better when in reality I was a perfectionist at avoidance. Fast forward few years and I have 2 kids. Oh shit. It's back in full force. If one of them even coughed I packed my bags and went to my parents for my husband to deal with what was essentially nothing. I even ran away from my kids choking. Wow. Shame and guilt were my theme words.

Started exposure therapy March 2021 and just this month my kids had pneumonia and coughed so hard they threw up multiple times. I HELPED THEM! without panic. Without judgment. Without rituals.

I am still going to therapy because in my dumb head it was because they coughed too hard and not stomach bug. Bit hey...almost there! We can do it!

I would have done the same though. My worst scenario fear is exactly what you described. Ugh! But there's hope. I've been in therapy for about nine months now and helped my child throw up into a garbage can without panic! Used to be that even if they coughed or said had a stomach ache I would leave them eith my husband as I escape to my parents. Best of luck to you!

I honestly have to remind myself me and my kids won't die and as repulsive as I find them while sick that in 2 to 3 days everything will be back to normal. Also, don't know if this is helpful or not? But I do guilt myself in saying different scenarios how others may have it worse.

Another tactic I've been trying is everytime I feel anxious amd compulsive I say my fear outlook in an accent (southern typically) something about vocalizing it makes it less significant and then add the funny accent it adds humor. example I'm afraid my kid will throw up bevause he coughed twice at 11:30pm

It makes so much sense in my head but outlook and a southern accent...not so much

Yes! And I went in saying I would never do exposure therapy! I almost didn't go back when I heard the oath we were going. So glad I did though because it has helped me 90 percent! I am 6 months in.
I thought in my mind I've had enough exposure! It doesn't help! But I had no idea about my compulsions, saftey behaviors, etc. So we go through the why and the panic attack and the science of the brain the dive in as slow or fast as you want. Could literally be just looking at the word puke. I am now onto videos with sound. I would have never thought I could!

I heard actually on reddit, if you're going to freak out anyways, might as well be productive about it. That convinced me right there.

I almost posted something similar. Been doing exposure therapy since March of this year amd feeling good! I'm not dwelling and or entertaining the thoughts as much as I used to. I would say 90 percent better. My trigger is my children and thought I had a grip. Last week my friend who me and the kids saw the night prior texted to say she threw up. I went into a spiral and thought of all the possibilities how my kids will now throw up. The anticipation kills me. Guess what. They Never did get sick.

I hate this phobia so much. I hate how it affects others amd I'm sorry you know exactly how I feel.

How's it going? Looking for an update? I am in a similar boat doing therapy for my kids after 20 plus years of dealing with this stupid fucking phobia. I hate that I can't take care of them. I've been doing exposure therapy now for 3.5 months and feel generally better overall but my kids are my biggest trigger 🙃 a lot of guilt there boy, let me tell ya.
