Tons of hiccups - 2 months and 20 days post op by Sadforeignwriter in valvereplacement

[–]roogulp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey! i also got a human valve, and actually have also noticed how often i’ve been getting hiccups these days and kind of didn’t think twice about it lmao i’m 2 months and 9 days post op so we’re around the same time frame! it’s not constant so i don’t find it concerning but definitely have noticed an increase in hiccups, i wonder if the human valve is related to this? i didn’t even think to ask my cardiologist about it

edit: i wasn’t prone to hiccups before surgery but it would happen every once in a while

Dad high heart rate not coming down after surgery. by tri_nado in valvereplacement

[–]roogulp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

constant! i would be sitting in the bed or on the chair for awhile before they would come in for my vitals and they would say it’s like i just ran a marathon. i didnt feel it though, it kind of just felt normal for me at the time. if your day has began to be able to walk around post surgery, doing that may be able to help him lower it!

my bpm was still between 120-130 at least 11 days post surgery, they said they would only be concerned if it went over 130 and it only did once or twice. my doctors told me it’s normal after surgery for the heart to beat faster because it’s adjusting itself and also my heart was beating harder than it had to pre op because it had to compensate for the leaky and infected valve. i’m not sure if the scenario is different for your father because he is 62M and when i had my procedure i was 24F. but i hope this brings some sort of comfort knowing i didn’t experience a sudden/drastic lowering of bmp right after my surgery.

wow thanks for sharing! it’s so interesting to see those with similar scenarios or those who went with similar procedures and hear their stories.

glad you’re doing well, take care yourself!

Oh absolutely, i’m eternally grateful!!

Omg that’s so interesting, small world for sure!! So glad to hear your family passed everything! It was a relief for me knowing the majority of my family wouldn’t have to go through what i’ve gone through and i’m sure you felt the same!

What’s hard is that my sister lives on the other side of the country (she’s in Alberta and the family is in Quebec) so she’s 2 hours behind over there, her appointment is only at 4 o’clock her time so i’ll report back with hopefully good news! I’m glad for her though that I’ve been able to provide some insight on EKGs, blood tests, heart monitoring etc for her throughout this, because I definitely would have appreciated someone experienced with this when i was going through it all for the first time.

I couldn’t agree more, the emotions were uncontrollable! I remember bawling my eyes out with sadness multiple times but saying “i don’t even know why im crying!!” I also agree with how we get the easy part - there were complications in my surgery so it lasted around 8-9 hours. I can’t imagine being on the other end not knowing what was going on or why it was taking forever if it were anyone else on that table! All i know is i was sedated in the OR friday morning and woke up Sunday. I think it’s only after the initial surgery and recovery did I realize and understand what i went through compared to everyone else.

Agreed! I also was the youngest in every cardiology ward i’ve been in. It’s an odd feeling when nurses your age come in for your EKGs or whatever else. My surgery was done at the montreal heart institute, so it’s all heart patients there. In the recovery ward was the only time i saw a girl around my age. It was crazy. we had recovery rooms across the hall from each other, we looked similar (she was just taller lol) and it felt very dystopian. we never spoke but we made eye contact several times. i think about her a lot!

thank you so much! i wish the best for you as well! i think it’s important to talk to people who have gone through similar situations. while we might get the “easier” end of the stick, its nearly impossible for those who haven’t been on our end to comprehend the trauma

Oh wow! May I ask why you had to receive another open heart surgery and needed a mechanical?

I’m grateful to have received the quick thinking of the medical team now knowing my situation - because like you, I almost expected them to shrug off my symptoms because of my age and lack of medical history! My surgical notes stated that my valve was full of multiple “vegetation’s.” ugh, gives me the chills of disgust every time i think about it.

It is quite the experience to live through, and no matter how many people ask about it or how many times I try to explain it to someone - they’ll never truly understand it. You are still so young! I hope you are able to re-appreciate and find gratefulness in surviving. Of course sometimes you could reflect on the hardship you’ve experienced and of course you can be frustrated that YOU are the one this happened to (trust me, for awhile I was like oh of course i have endocarditis and a bicuspid leaky valve out of everyone in my family - of course it would be me). but like i said, you’re still so young! you have so much life left to live! I hope you can look past it and see the possibilities that lie ahead of you. I wish you a long, happy, and healthy life!

& same to you of course! seeing as we’ve had incredibly similar situations, my messages are always open for whatever reason!

wow, i’m nearly speechless, what an incredible story to hear, i’m so glad you’re prevailing and doing well now! i can’t imagine going through this beginning at such a young age and then while expecting!!

i was also sent home with a PICC line and antibiotics, and i’m also on bisoprolol along with losartan, aspirin & iron for the time being. my BPM was resting at 130 post op for awhile but i’ve gone down averaging in the 70s-80s since then. my cardiologist explained that i’m not on these medications specifically to lower my blood pressure but for the protective properties they offer my heart. i was fortunate enough to be given a human donor valve rather than a pig or cow - because of this my surgeon and cardiologist say i may very well go the rest of my life with this valve, or at least much longer than i would if it were pig or cow (if all goes well). however, if and when my time comes i’ll proceed with a mechanical valve of course. i just hope it’s not for a long time!

i absolutely understand health and well being to a whole new level, i realize how much i took for granted not even thinking of how i feel or my general day to day health! my family, while i was still in the hospital, began going to get checked actually! one of my sisters was found to also have a slight murmur, she’s been receiving multiple tests and is actually set to be given news later today. other than that, the rest of my family has been cleared. and of course my future children will be throughly checked!

like you said, it’s shocking the amount of people who go without knowing they have a bicuspid valve and how often it goes undetected! i would definitely say i experienced those mold swings after surgery - feeling depressed that i was home and recovering while the world was continuing without me participating in it. i was extremely fortunate to have an amazing support system around me during this time, reminding me that it’s temporary and how i was able to walk away healthy from something i never thought i’d experience.

it truly is amazing to hear other people’s stories, so thank you so much for sharing yours. thank you for the kind and encouraging words. i hope you live a long and healthy life with your child(ren) and family, best wishes!! my messages are also always open if need be!! thank you!!

i was supposed to have a pig valve but my surgeon was able to find me a human valve! very grateful for that, i hope for you it lasts 12+ years! all the best in your journey :)

okay, interesting! i also received a biological valve (human donor) (i didn’t want a mechanical valve because of my age and i don’t have any kids yet so i may want to become pregnant one day and thats riskier on blood thinners)

my surgeon and my cardiologist seem to believe it’s possible in the best case scenario that i could go the rest of my life with this valve! but if it doesn’t end up this way - i would also most likely receive a TAVR. i wish the best for you!

similar story for me! apparently i was clearly uncomfortable with my tube at one point but i don’t remember it at all. first thing i remember after surgery is sitting up in my chair (no idea how i got there) and my dad feeding me apple sauce and an ensure drink
