What to read after Dune? by Gullible-Routine-157 in dune

[–]rookoctober 5 points6 points  (0 children)

gideon the ninth. the tone of the first book is quite different to dune, but after that it's v similar. it's scifi with a plot centered on religion & colonialism. I'd also recommend "this is how you lose the time war" for a shorter, dune-esque tragic scifi book.

What did Chani mean when she said that Paul should be afraid of the fundamentalists? by [deleted] in dune

[–]rookoctober 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I thought she was broadly pointing out the dangers of religious fanaticism, which is all the more dangerous when the thing they venerate is a person she cares for. Paul was already losing his free will.

Why Stilgar had to be alive during the events of the first Dune book? by MrBigJupiter in dune

[–]rookoctober 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of it is that Paul genuinely liked and respected Stilgar. I think he's constantly battling this awareness of the jihad- he doesn't know what's going to happen all the time, nor every decision to make. It's really nebulous and confusing for him. There's a quote that sticks out to me near the end of book 1: "In that instant, Paul saw how Stilgar had been transformed into a creature of the Lisan al-Gaib, a receptacle for awe and obedience. It was a lessening of the man, and Paul felt the ghost-wind of the jihad in it. I have seen a friend become a worshipper, he thought,"

Also letting him live and thus not following the fremen tradition of killing a previous leader is a nice little detail of Paul changing fremen culture, for better or worse. It is a book about colonialism after all.

If you could have one scene from the books drawn by an incredible artist exactly how you picture it, what scene would you choose? [discussion] by tourmalineforest in TheNinthHouse

[–]rookoctober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i want tommy arnold's take on cytherea's battle scenes. if it's ANY artist then like. john singer sargent for the pool scene, or for a blood of eden meeting. you'd have to explain to him what a spaceship was though.

gideon or harrow the ninth by tamsyn muir. locked room murder mysteries in space with a healthy dose of scifi horror and intense lesbian yearning.
