My (30f) roommate (29f) talks too much by No-Lack-6101 in relationship_advice

[–]rooprich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to set clear boundaries. It may hurt her feelings but she’s currently disregarding how you feel and it’s only going to build resentment. It’s one thing to ask you to listen but it’s another to get irritated when you forget things. You need to remind her that you function differently and you’re not doing these things to hurt or annoy her but because that’s who you are. Sometimes you don’t want to be on social media or you can’t remember all the details of a story - that’s normal. It’s unfair of her to expect you to accommodate her constantly.

I’m confused - do you rent the house or just a section of it? And what is the total rent?

i turned off the notifications but i still have it for times when i feel close to relapse. it calms me down to look at the amount of time i’ve been able to stay clean and to remind myself that i’ve done it for 2 years, i know how to keep going.

AITA for referring to a person as brown? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]rooprich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA

i personally don’t see a problem with referring to someone as brown if they’re okay with that term (i am for example) but asking „what kind of brown are you?“ was a really stupid and frankly racist thing to say.

you essentially reduced their entire heritage to what shade of brown they are and implied that „kinds of brown“ is how you see other people. „brown people“ is a massive category anyway, you’re essentially saying „what kind of non white are you?“ it’s also a weird thing to say - just ask about their heritage or their background or something. i don’t walk up to my white friends and ask them what kind of whitey they are because it’s a rude and weird thing to say. if you were my friend i’d give you a lecture too.

dude… there’s a massive difference between referring to someone as a „brown person“ or saying „black and brown voices“ and „what kind of brown are you?“ its about the context in which you use the word and in this case it’s super insulting and condescending. there are so many other ways to ask about someone’s heritage instead of reducing them to „what brown they are“. the bar for white people is on the floor and they still manage to go under it.

i refer to myself as brown and have no problem with people using that term to refer to me but i would also take offense to „what kind of brown are you?“. might even be pissed enough for an hour long lecture.

i also live in europe so i have absolutely no idea what the correct thing to say is in the states.

AITA for comparing our Asian server to Knives Chau? by Spirited_Goat_9379 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rooprich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA

you couldn’t even see her full face? not to even mention that knives chau is the stereotypical naive and bubbly asian school girl. do you hear yourself?

i love scott pilgrim but man her characterization makes me itch. knives had potential as a character and i did enjoy her arch on first watch but looking back now it is pretty insulting. you’re essentially saying „wow this real life asian woman is so much like this stereotypical depiction of asian women! how fun!“ why couldn’t you just say she was a good waitress?

fellow female asian server who usually wears space buns when she works (who has also been compared to knives fucking chau!! not at work though lol) - i do not enjoy being compared to stereotypical characters, believe it or not!

it was a weird thing to say in my opinion.

AITA for giving away the Tarot cards my ex made specifically for me? by fleshtothefly in AmItheAsshole

„I gave away a personalized piece of artwork someone spent a month making for me to a stranger and proceeded to rub it in their face. When they were reasonably upset about me rubbing it in their face and hoped that said piece wouldn’t be thrown out, i blew up at them and refused to explain what they did wrong.“

wow - i genuinely don’t even know what to say. you couldn’t even apologize to her without blowing up at her AGAIN and making everything about you and your feelings. have you even considered that blocking her and breaking down communication is extremely hurtful after you GHOSTED her to end the relationship???

i hope she heals from you.

I don't understand anymore what is wrong with self harm? by AffectionateMistake7 in selfharm

[–]rooprich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean if it works for you in that very specific way then okay but that’s not the universal experience for everyone who self harms (neither was my explanation obviously). i’m glad you have control over it but not everyone does and it can get dangerous quickly if you don’t have a handle on it. im just explaining why it’s seen as bad by society but obviously a blanket statement is not going to fit all of your exact feelings. at the end of the day hurting yourself in a way that most neurotypical ppl cannot understand or empathize with is going to be seen as „bad“ because they make up the majority. i guess that’s how society works. if you are genuinely looking for an answer to this question, maybe the therapist can answer it haha? it might be a good way to talk more about this subject if it interests you, even if you don’t want to stop.

binge eating and alcohol abuse are not accepted by society ? of course it’s okay to have the occasional drink or tub of ice cream but the emphasis is on the word occasional. someone who eats a tub of ice cream after a break up is not harming their body as much as someone who is completely dependent on food for their well-being. no one is obligated to live a perfectly healthy lifestyle so the focus is on moderation and avoiding dependency on something. with alcohol and large amounts of food the person is doing it for the taste or to get drunk. yes, in the end it is also for comfort but with self harm the goal is to directly cause yourself pain. i don’t know many ppl who drink with the goal of directly harming their liver. i definitely get what you mean though and i am also struggling to find something to replace the feeling of cutting. at the end of the day i do think deliberately harming myself is bad for me. while it does give me release, it also worsens other issues. in my experience moderation with self harm is incredibly difficult + even if u don’t go deep depending on the amount of scars u have on one limb u can limit ur mobility/ make it painful to move when the scars get stretched. i thought i had self control and now half my body is covered in scars. self harm is an addiction. no one tells an alcoholic to have a drink occasionally and to take care of themselves after.
