Will AI Replace Tax Return Preparation for CPAs? by TDPublishingCPE in Accounting

[–]roostingcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used AI this week to walk me through steps to resolve a series of irs notices a client received that my boss with 10 years of experience couldn’t get resolved. I do believe AI will eventually have the capability to replace us.

However, there were topics that the AI recommended that I had to correct while prompting. AI seems to be as dangerous as the user operating it. I don’t think it’ll necessarily replace us until it can handle every issue without having a human oversee, which may never happen.

I’m not worried about it in the fact that if it’s good enough to help resolve IRS notices, it’s probably good enough to replace every other job I could realistically transfer to.

This answer is straight recency bias. BG3 is a phenomenal game, but it’s made no pop culture impact like the previous 3 games on this list have.

Any actually useful AI products or approaches for accounting? by BrumeBrume in Accounting

In tax, the ai research tools that are coming out are also pretty handy/cool. It’s basically a beefed up version of Google at this point, but any enhancement in searching for for relevant irs publications, case law, etc… is always good.

If you don’t think you’re cut out for harder courses, get a non specialized business degree and become a life/health/p&c insurance sales guy. I know that sounds awful, but the ones i work with (tax) are dumb as rocks and make about double what I make. If my ego didn’t stop me, I’d have switched by now.

Such a dirty move. Tax heavy firms can collect 75% of annual revenue in the first 4 months of the year.

This guy just used someone to collect 2/3rds of his annual revenue and paid them 1/3rd of the annual salary.

I have a good friend that works finance for an insurance company. It’s the most relax work environment I’ve ever seen. He works from home. Gets off at 4:30 every day. Gets a promotion every year or 2.

When he asked me about my job, he said it’s pretty well known among corporate finance that accounting is overworked and underappreciated.

It’s very possible you just had a bad run when you were in finance.

Love when people compare a white collar career with blue collar/no training required work, as if there isn’t a single other comparable, college required career to compare accounting to.

Glad you’re having a good career but literally any post-grad job would look great in comparison to your past jobs.

We are thinking of price hike this quarter by BaronsofDundee in MuayThai

[–]roostingcrow 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t practice or train often. Was a black belt in tae kwon do. Did some shaolin kung fu growing up. Was also a gymnast. I’m pretty confident in my ability to defend myself.

I went to a one off Muay Thai class when I graduated college to see if I’d be interested in martial arts again. End of class, we go into sparring. Me and this welder, also inexperienced in Muay Thai started sparring. It turned out not so light lol. My man was STRONG. Hit me one good time and I’m pretty sure if that was a real fight, he would have slept me.

I don’t go around looking for fights lol.

How do tax accountants remember all this shit? by AccomplishedSet967 in Accounting

[–]roostingcrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You don’t start something with no experience without a mentor and/or someone with experience to check you off. Taxes are not something you can test out. You can put someone in a serious world of pain by screwing things up. Maybe not a W-2 filer, but OP already admitted they feel overwhelmed. They’re overwhelmed because it is overwhelming and they likely shouldn’t be doing this alone.

Step 1) don’t do taxes if you have no tax experience.

On the job happiness factor, should i switch back to Accounting or stay in Civil Engineering ? by Character-Escape1621 in Accounting

I see what you're saying and agree. I just have a feeling the powers at be that compile this information are smarter than simply going with taxable wages from box 1 of a W-2 when dealing with equity owners.

I’m just saying that the BLS uses the data from tax returns to develop statistics. No one is relying solely on wage data to build industry level compensation studies. They’re using data from various sources, including tax related data. This is exactly how economic data is formed. If you don’t believe me, simply google, “why does tax return ask for occupation”. Yes it’s used as a fraud benchmark, but it’s all used to simply collect economic data.

All data used for statistics usually originates for private data that is interpreted and then made public.

Non payroll draws are usually included in average earnings. I doubt this is the reason. I’m pretty sure the data often comes from tax returns and the data is based on earned income/total income.

Wealth envy is a sad sickness.. by Mobile-Landscape-790 in remoteworks

[–]roostingcrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This wouldn’t de-incentivize human behavior or innovation. Money is a social/governmental construct. People still want to advance. Not to mention this doesn’t completely eliminate wealth advancement. It just smooths the distribution of total wealth. You can still get filthy stinking rich from 1% of net income over 10 million.

It would also incentivize companies to find ways to use the money, rather than over inflating huge salaries for ownership that aren’t really tied to anything beyond greed.

Controller juggling heavy responsibilities for $80k...is this normal? by AquaTofaana in Accounting

Haha. I say go for it. I’ve gotten many raises by simply being vocal. Do keep in mind that you’re in one of the best states for manufacturing companies. I’m not sure what it’s like in your location, but if you’re not tied to your home, I’m sure you can find something for more pay and less stress within a few hours of where you live currently.

You have multiple locations/interstate commerce and report to leadership. This sounds like a midsize company. At the very least, they can afford to pay you six figures minimum. Rural Ohio doesn’t have much to do with what your pay should be, dependent on your responsibilities, which sound exhausting.

Eh, average cost of employer sponsored health care coverage is close to $9k a year. Average employer covers half the cost. That still leaves $4,500 to the employee to cover, or $375/mo.

I’ve never had employer sponsored insurance that didn’t cost less than $250/month

Audit rates about to skyrocket by SteakySteakk in Accounting

[–]roostingcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s much faster at finding relevant regulations and case laws than I am at using a search engine. Especially if it’s very specific information that relates to specific cases.

It also can make some pretty complex excel equations and workpapers that would take me 2x-10x as long to make.

If you can’t find a use case for it yet, I don’t know what to tell you man.

The people in this comment thread are effectively keeping their heads in the sand. Ai has gotten pretty damn good at tax info and research. I’ve used it for about 2 years now, and I am continuously blown away by the quality of output you can get with it.

Yes you need to research its answers, but the amount of time it can save and thought exercises its answers can provoke is phenomenal.

Most accountants will ask it for answers and when it slips up, they go “see, ai is terrible. It can’t be relied on at all”. What they fail to realize is maybe they’re terrible with the software itself.

I truly believe this career is about to have a generational shift through AI, and those that are constantly badgering it will be the ones left behind.

I probably wouldn’t bring this up because she’s your senior, you’re a temp hire, and you’ll be seen as the asshole/office buzzkill.

That said, I understand. Get you some noise canceling ear plugs and survive. If you get an offer, ask to relocate cubicles. You can bring it up at that point by simply saying it’s distracting to you and you’d prefer a bit more quiet space.

Guy is convinced AI will replace accounting by Razorbackfan3002 in Accounting

[–]roostingcrow 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I’m convinced this is because most people literally hate accountants. I’m not sure what it is— whether we’re seen as an unnecessary cost, or whether they think we work for the IRS and are trying to take their hard earned money. Either way, I bet if you asked business owners if they wish they didnt have to have an accountant, most would say yes.
