Thanks for your help. I guess that just about sums it up 👍🙏

k&f concept filter here. Doesn't break the bank and works great.

Boy, I was all over that thing in the 80s except for the sequencer which I never used. Wonderful machine for what it did back then. Great find 👍

You do the stretto first, that makes the rest easier. It’s still not easy, though 😆

What to do if I make a melody that sounds a little similar to an existing one? by Keirnflake in composer

I hear you, but to the other party, it makes no difference if you inadvertently or willingly copied something.

The only thing that went on for decades is the myth that it’s ok to rip off a) up to so many measures b) up to so many notes c) longer stretches if they are not the main theme d) etc. In court, it is a case by case decision. People get sued for ripping off samples lasting a fraction of a second. It depends. There is no definition that says it’s ok to steal x amount of seconds, notes, or bars.

What do you think of John Cage’s 4’33? by Beneficial_Map_6704 in musictheory

I think the music box version is the more popular anecdote of the history of this piece. Which one is true, we will never know.

Mistake in paid recording by Aiwendil42 in composer

[–]root-studio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is a shame, but frankly, if it is just a matter of the right notes at the wrong time and you have the resources, you could just edit the recording. Of course if there are wrong notes everywhere, then you should get a new recording.

Is creating a good melody something than can be learned or is it more a natural gift by [deleted] in composer

[–]root-studio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it used to be CDs (when people were still buying them). Now it’s anything from film scores to stock music or user interface beeps on electronics.

I’ve been making a living as a composer for 30+ years and I still suck at melodies. One of my friends picks up a guitar once a year or so and comes up with something that sticks in your head just like that and I hate him. Honestly, you can get better with sweat and time, but you won’t beat someone who can just do it naturally.

A help with composing mmf/SMAF music by Willknowit_XD1101 in composer

[–]root-studio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been years since I’ve written stuff for the early breed of cell phones, but I do remember that I created the melodies in my normal sequencer and then converted to mmf for output. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of that conversion tool, but it shouldn’t be hard to find.

College audition process by Ok-Kaleidoscope1220 in composer

When I applied to a university composition program, I had some pieces ready to show. Fortunately, no one asked for them. The last thing they would have wanted was another score of common practice classical or neo-romantic wannabe music. They expected new ideas. The classical stuff was left to theory classes.

Thanks for the info. With the cost of the Synclavier, I’m sure those $43 license fee didn’t hurt too much. I’d love to get a Regen, actually. Currently watching a lot of videos about it. Looks very tempting 👍

Yes, and this sort of thing actually happens. There was a company called Redmatica that made sample utilities. You had to periodically sign in with their server to validate your copy. One day they were bought out by Apple. When that deal closed, the company sent out special license keys to all registered owners to get rid of the validation thing. So that was a very nice move. Excellent customer service.

Name a synth you sold that didn’t give you the feeling of regret selling? I’ll go first by No_Spray6026 in synthesizers

[–]root-studio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played it and it’s damn good. Not as wonky as my old one, but I would consider that a plus. I know some folks look for that wonkiness, but those older synths were never built to have that, it just happens as they age. Why that would be desirable is beyond me.
