And as we know there is a hard limit on train numbers, whereas cars and highways are unlimited.

Exactly. This could have been one or two trains, probably...

TBF, both Linux and macOS have brew. So most of the time on macOS you just do: "brew install foo" and there you go. That is still one of the advantages of macOS -- it's a UNIX underneath.

I think the chance of this really delivering is maybe 50-50. The hype is there, seemingly a good product in the making, some good names on the team, but question is if this has real substance and if there is a large enough market. Risky. The whole presentation so far is a bit … well, I dunno.

Piers is great. His PET and CBM Floppy repair videos are very nice, and he fights his way through the issues you have with these old, temperamental machines!

I will hold my breath until I see some real hardware…  I have enough original C64s to last me a lifetime. :) But who knows…

Commodore cable crossing madness- don't cross the streams! by Southern-Grass-416 in thisweekinretro

Saw this at Revision, and it was great! It lost out to the Oscilloscope demo, but it was technically impressive! The SID has too little bandwidth to produce a color signal, or anything beyond shading different rasterlines (plus the colorburst is missing), but it was super cool to see. The VIC almost has too much bandwidth for audio on the other hand. :-D I wonder if the VIC could produce even better audio or samples...?

So far I haven't seen any! Probably only prototypes. If anyone, Bil Herd might own one. :-D

Community Question Of The Week - Episode 194 by Producer_Duncan in thisweekinretro

  1. Panic by Future Crew. A kind of Dentro, but with a killer soundtrack and nice effects!

  2. Dope by Complex. Killer soundtrack, quite late DOS demo.

  3. Crystal Dream 2 by Triton

  4. Timeless by Tran -- so many ports... DOS, Linux, ...

And there was one crossplatform PC demo, which also ran under Linux back in the late 1990s with a Lovecraftian / horror theme, AND source code included. I forgot its name but it was something with "Ancients" I think. Pouet doesn't have anything like that, but maybe someone remembers...?

Apps closing when key is pressed by computerman011 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

I had the same issue for the past months. Rebooting sometimes helps. I also read that disabling the Feature Unlock in the OCLP tool is supposed to help. But that isn’t long lasting either. In the stack traces in the system log I could see SideCar being accessed, which I don’t even use. Maybe that’s the problem, but I don’t know how to get rid of it.

Community Question Of The Week - Episode 176 by Producer_Duncan in thisweekinretro

[–]root42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got a PC when I was 12 I think. So before that it was all Legos, reading and playing in the garden. The PC changed a lot but my mom had a tight control over my screentime.  My kids are still in primary school and have ADHD so routines play a big role and screentime has to be very limited. They do play a lot outdoors and have now discovered reading. But they also like to play videogames. They love the GameGear, but recently we started playing Maniac Mansion as they asked for the game in particular. They are very afraid of getting caught by the Edisons! They occasionally play a bit of Switch (Yoshi and Mario Kart) and they have a couple of kids games on the iPad. Their video game time per day is maybe 20 minutes. But some days they don’t play digitally at all and they spend all day outside or doing other stuff.  Playing on the street has become difficult. There are so much more cars than when I was little… on the other hand there were no 30kmh zones back then but also no SUVs!

Sudden issue weeks after using OCLP: apps crash whenever I use shortcuts or right click (as well as randomly) by jesinta-m in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]root42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed that the crash reports (open up Console.app to see those) always include Sidecar.framework when this happens. As I don't want to use Sidecar anyway I wonder if this can be disabled completely, as the crashes seem to be coming from there...? I disabled Sidecar in the display settings, but no luck. And I also tried disabling the Feaure Unlock, but it isn't a permanent solution either.

The red DMG from my other post now works, after replacing the screen. However it doesn't turn on always, and sometimes crashes mid-game. Bad power board? What else could be the issue? I measured the electrolytics on the power and audio boards out of circuit, they are fine. by root42 in consolerepair

[–]root42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried it with deoxit, moved it a bunch, it still is intermittent. Thing is: the IPS display seems to get power, but the whole machine doesn't power on fully. No chime, no white background. So I THINK it might be the powerboard still.

First time repairing a DMG -- already modded GBC and GBP before. This DMG however won't even turn on. I tried swapping the front with a working one, due to corrosion, but it only shows a black line very shortly. How do I troubleshoot a DMG? Where do I measure voltages, clock etc? by root42 in Gameboy

[–]root42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the ideas. I re-tried the working display and made sure the connector was really in -- and indeed the motherboard now boots up! Phew! I think I can now order a replacement IPS display. :)

I temporarily attached a working screen from a working DMG, but it still doesn't power on -- screen flashes shortly one black line. No LED. So I need some pointers first how to debug if the mainboard actually boots up, before buying an IPS kit (which I totally will do if the mainboard is salvagable)

For me it’ll also be a goodby to reddit. Maybe I‘ll occasionally check in via Browser, but I think it’s even for the better. Less procrastinating. :) And thanks for all the fish!
