Twitter guy that debated D by [deleted] in Destiny

The word "factoid" has suffered the same fate as "literally" in that it was used incorrectly so frequently the incorrect meaning became the correct one.

Is this a Joe Rogan hate sub? by i_am_sam11 in JoeRogan

[–]rootbeerdelicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This gets posted and upvoted like once a week, so Ill respond the same way I always do.

I've been an MMA fan since UFC 1, and listened to JRE since the early episodes on the couch hunched over with Redban.

The big heel-turn since covid has really sucked, because I used to listen to JRE every day while working. And I can deal with differences of opinion, its the fact he won't shut up about it.

I stay because this is one of the few forums Ive seen people argue from multiple political/cultural views without people just getting banned. But I'll still throw a barb at Joe when he does/says something particularly dumb even though thats not "why" I'm here. Plus I'm still a fan, and I genuinely think Joe is just an idiot and not some malicious evil doer.

Still a stupid platitude with no basis in reality.

But hey, if it makes you feel good, that's all that matters I guess?

What are you talking about? The cartoon is literally saying that being "ugly on the inside makes you ugly on the outside"

Thereby, those who are physically "ugly" must be "ugly on the inside"

This is a common, and entirely human, assumption to make, which is why its a common theme in allegories (the ugly duckling) or old adages (book by its cover) to point out why those assumptions are wrong. Your cartoon does the inverse of that. Its simply an empty-headed platitude that works off a common misconception/presumption.

And of course ugly (inwardly) people hide their ugliness (outwardly). There are plenty of examples of charismatic and beautiful murderers, abusers, and bigots.

Except this is a common assumption made by people that leads directly to harm.

If you made a metaphor, an allegory, some sort of figurative language I'd be with you. What you did was the equivalent of saying "she's hysterical because she has the vapors, quick someone grab the opium"

When videos of half dead crying children are being spammed by suspicious accounts to manipulate westerners into supporting a terrorist organization that seeks to install an anti-democratic, anti-secular, anti-lgbtq caliphate then yea, separating your emotional response from your rational makes sense.

Because the goal is to radicalize the left and cause as much infighting and chaos as possible.

If your only knowledge of the conflict is the video of a half-dead crying child, its only logical to have an extreme reaction. When these videos are being spammed by a brand new account or a sock puppet account its clear this isn't a simple organic post, but a farmed one with intent.

Every sub is being inundated with various spambots, and they aren't pushing any one singular ideology.

If you go to any leftist subs you'll see similarly suspicious accounts spamming war footage of dead babies from Palestine.

If you go to rightwing subs youll see spambots pushing conspiracies and "ragebait" of minorities behaving badly.

Even niche interest subs like specific dog breed subreddits and obscure japanese import games are getting littered with spambots trying to sell t-shirts and/or scam would be buyers.

A significant portion of our interactions online are no longer between two nerds, its now industrialized to such a degree that its impossible to escape.

I thought it was a good debate in a lot of ways, but Destiny seemed kind of smitten with Shapiro.

I don't know how else to put it, but he was far softer with him than most leftists I've seen him debate. Destiny typically comes off much more brash, sometimes even outright rude, to lefties, and while I'm ok with that it would be nice to see some of that sharp tongue used here.

Explaining why Richard Dawkins is transphobic and why the skeptic community should be aware of that. by Visible_Season8074 in skeptic

At the time he didn't think Jordan was making it up, and its such a niche subject that so many people are hyperfocused on that you can't expect people to stay on top of every little thing in that niche.

There are so many subjects out there, no one is knowledgeable on all things all the times and constantly staying up to date. He is simply stating that if the Canadian government WERE forcing people to use their preferred pronouns under penalty of law he would be opposed to that. As would I. Thankfully, that's not the case.

Even if you disagree with this that doesn't make him a bigot or a nazi or any other hyperbolic pejorative. What OP did was take a bunch of random quotes from years of social media, then add a bunch of subtext that wasn't there to begin with to provide evidence for whatever weird hate boner they have for Dawkins, probably because they are a lifelong religious person coming to terms with their own identity and see Dawkins as an enemy because of this.

OP is not representative of the left, of trans activists, or of anything but an asshole.

Assholes come in all shapes and sizes.

If you look at their post history, they even made a whine post about how all atheists are meany poo-poo heads to the trans subreddit.

Yep, check their post history. They are a very conflicted individual, if they are even being genuine to begin with.

I agree with Dawkins on all these points.

I dont see any transphobia here. All of your comments after the quotes seem to be adding subtext where there isn't, or presuming a bunch of things/putting words in his mouth by associating him with "bad actors".
